The line "I play when I want to play" that is attributed to Randy Moss is used quite often, (Mike Reiss used it in his Globe article about the receivers this morning.) but what where the circumstances in which Moss used the line originally?

Dan Snapp (who lives in Minnesota) goes back and examines how an innocuous line can be grabbed by the likes of Peter King and turned into something that it was never intended to mean.

I Context When I Want To Context

You folks are bound and determined to be worth reading...this seriously cuts into my nap time! :rocker:

I was surprised to see Reiss use that quote. Moss just poorly worded his response to a question and d-bags like King, as this article show, ran with it. But it surprises me to see someone like Reiss make the same mistake.

On a very random note, I don't know if there are any Arrested Development (TV show) fans out there, but it reminds me of the episode when G.O.B. screams at a reporter: "And don’t edit this for your broadcast so it looks like I’m screaming, “I killed Earl Milford!" and of course, the phrase "I killed Earl Milford" becomes the headlines of the evening news...

Taken out of context? I suppose it's mildly interesting that the question originally asked was about what gets Moss motivated. But I was never confused about that. I never assumed the question was, "Hey Randy, do you take plays off?"

According to this piece, the whole quote was:

Moss was quoted in a Nov. 23 column by Minneapolis Star-Tribune columnist Sid Hartman as saying, “I play when I want to play. Do I play up to my top performance, my ability every time? Maybe not. I just keep doing what I do and that is playing football. When I make my mind up, I am going out there to tear somebody’s head off. When I go out there and play football, man it’s not anybody telling me to play or how I should play. I play when I want to play.”

Sorry, I'm not seeing the egregious error in quoting the "I play when I want to play" part. The quote is pretty much along the lines of what I thought it was and how it gets reported.

Now, I agree that the whole flap is silly and was overblown. But Randy did say these things. I don't think the context really makes it "fundamentally innocuous" as this piece suggests. That's just as much overstatement the other way.

Bottom line, I'm not concerned about Moss in a Belichick system. I think he's misunderstood. And I like that he speaks his mind. I believe he cares about winning. But he does talk a bit too quickly sometimes and the quote supports it -- context or otherwise.

BB has proven time and time again that he can handle the big egos one way(see Bryan Cox, Corey Dillon, Ty Law) or the other (see Terry Glenn).

It's up to Moss to be sucessful here. From everything I have seen and read, he's doing just fine here.

The interesting back story to all this, is how pundits seem to WANT athletes to live in cliche', fully knowing it is a cliche'.

The bit in that article by Peter King seemed to almost come right out and say it like this: "we'll all know it's a lie, Randy, but you just got a huge new contract, don't you know you have to say it? You had a chance to blather on with white lies like every other athele says. So if you want us to treat you the same as them, you have to lie too - but you wouldn't so you must be clueless."

Of course, if you're Randy and you don't give a crap what people like Peter King think, you're not being clueless, you're doing exactly what you want.
