Loved the article.
As a SciFi nerd that article is like reading a Darth Vader interview where he speaks glowingly about how Obi Wan taught/shaped his superior ability to rule the galaxy. While Brown didn't have that direct relationship (age), you can see (as was already known) how Brown helped write the 'how to run a team' bible that BB follows so closely.
The New England Patriots under BB to this day are kind of a throwback. They're a descendent of Brown, the old school. IMHO the day BB retires is the last day old school will ever exist in the NFL again.

What a treasure the NFL, and all of us have in Belichick. He's a repository of history and information that rivals NFL films.

All the while secretly hoping that BB will fail, for no other reason than to be able to say, "I told you so!!"

Before the Patriots played the Bengals in 2004, Belichick said he had two copies of Brown’s biography, “PB: The Paul Brown Story.” One of the copies was autographed by Brown but got ate by Belichick’s dog. When asked during that call what happened to the dog, Belichick said the dog wasn’t around anymore. When another writer asked what kind of dog it was, Belichick said it was “A dead dog.”

I'm quite sure that if reporters asked him to elaborate on these kinds of topics, Bill Belichick pressers would last well over 2-3 hrs every single time.

He loves to talk about things that actually matter. The history of the game, X's and O's breakdowns, and questions that are focused on the game of football, instead of media driven headlines about the same old, same old.

I'm quite sure that if reporters asked him to elaborate on these kinds of topics, Bill Belichick pressers would last well over 2-3 hrs every single time.

He loves to talk about things that actually matter. The history of the game, X's and O's breakdowns, and questions that are focused on the game of football, instead of media driven headlines about the same old, same old.

Belichick loves to talk about football, but he loathes talking about his current team as he thinks that nothing good can come of it, basically all downside, so he's a dour prick in press conferences when dealing with questions about that team, but still has no problem elaborating if asked about Tedy Bruschi or LT or the old Giant teams.............etc...


He's fascinating when he's talking football, but boy is he a prick to the press dealing with that day's issues.

Paul Brown was always the coach he revered....

I will never forget the lead up to the 2004 SB and Jim Nantz insisting that Belichick was retiring if he got that win, claiming he would have met his goals.....blah blah, blah blah...., and knowing at the time that Paul Brown was always the guy he respected most and the coach he was most patterning his career on.

While most of the lists have Paul Brown behind BB, for some reason they exclude his stint with the AAFL. If you look at just wins, as we do with the coaches who coached in the AFL, then Paul Brown is at 222 and BB is at 207.

Not sure why they want to qualify the wins of Brown, but include all of the wins for everyone else.. if you include Brown then BB is #6 in all time wins instead of #5.

Not that it is all that important, but always though it was BB's goal to surpass Brown for his own personal career goal.

The NFL does not recognize the AAFC records because of the animus of one man, George Halas,

George Halas hated the fact that the Paul Brown led Browns came into the NFL and immediately destroyed the reigning NFL champion on the way to wining the title in the first year of the merger/conquest. In the AFL/NFL merger, it took the upstart AFL three Super Bowl Championships games, before parity/superiority was reached. In a fit of pure spite, Halas made sure that the AAFC records would not be recognized, so they never were. Although in retrospect the League should do so.

The somewhat phony Vince Lombardi merely properly organized a team full of former First Round picks into the mighty Packers,won until they aged, and then skipped out leaving Phil Bengston holding the bag and facing rebuilding,

Instead Paul Brown, like Bill Belichick, built several generations of winning teams, while continuing to win.. If you privately asked who the League Championship trophy should be named for, BB would likely say it should be the Paul Brown Trophy instead of the Vince Lombardi Trophy, so high is his regard for Paul Brown.

He'd be right of course..
