Miami wanted Mallett at #79 but couldn't trade up

I don't see Belichick using a draft pick primarily to keep a particular player from another team. I think he drafts the guy he thinks is most likely to help the team win. I could see him cracking a smile if a particular pick had the side-effect of frustrating a Divisional or Conference opponent, though.

I tend to agree on all of this. Knowing the Dolphins had an interest in him was more of an icing on the cake.

Two picks before the Patriots were on the clock in the 3rd and "Mallet to the Patriots" is being announced loud and proud. Funny how the most secretive team in the NFL is all of a sudden the town gossip. I believe it was Reiss who clarified this selection best......they tried to move out of the pick, couldn't, and so....selected the highest rated player on their board filling an open roster slot

The same thing happened with the number 33 pick; BB was on TV right before the draft saying people were trying to trade like crazy to get their QB. Probably a BS attempt to build up some interest.

I don't think we drafted Mallett to block him from going to the Dolphins. I think we would have preferred to trade out of that spot if possible, but once we couldn't, we took the guy we thought was worth that pick.

The Dolphins had their chance. As their ex Bill Parcells said in a draft special a few weeks ago, "If you wait to see the robins, the spring is over."

Touche` !!! :rocker:

I don't know why Miami didn't pull the string sooner if they wanted Mallett so bad

NFL.com news: Dolphins reportedly coveted Mallett but couldn't strike deal

We may never know if Miami had been known by other teams that they wanted Mallett bad and were willing to move up and maybe the Pats saw this and swept away a possible opposing starting QB in the division on purpose...not to mention need in a few years for us as well.

I remember hearing the stories of NE drafting Maroney at #1 in 2006 because they heard their rivals, the Colts wanted him badly and hoping he would fall,so they forced Indy to draft Addai instead.

I could see Bill being sly in watching his rivals draft desires and who they want and pulling the carpet out from underneath them.

Trade him to Miami for a 2012 1st rd pick.
