These players were on the field for the 17 ST reps, except for Pettus who played 12 (and is the protector for our punt returner)

Schooler
McMillan
Elliss
Dial
Pettus
Hawkins
Ximinez

The top five had ZERO snaps on Defense.

Hawkins and Ximines has 24 and 11 defensive snaps and are contributors as backups.

I should have added our UDFA Pettus. He is the new protector for the punt returner. He had 12 ST reps and no reps on Defense. I'll fix

There's a difference between only playing on STs and not getting any defensive snaps to being a STs only player. McMillan, for instance, seems like someone who would play defensive snaps if Bentley or Tavai got hurt, whereas a guy like Schooler doesn't seem like he'd ever be a serious contender for any defensive snaps. Also, Takitaki and Mapu are out right now and when they come back, they likely push two of these guys off the roster and potentially take on some rotational snaps on defense.

Schooler seems to be the only pure STs only guy here. Pettus and Dial seem to have developmental potential on defense but are stuck in deep reserve roles for now at least. Like I said above, McMillan is caught in a numbers game vs. being unplayable on defense. Maybe Elliss is STs only too, not going to pretend to know a ton on him but he likely loses his spot to Takitaki eventually anyway.

I generally agree with your analysis, although I strongly disagree with regard to Dial. He is a long term STO, and that's fine with me. Pettus probably is also. I don't see him getting reps on defense. However, he also may be a long-term special teamer since his skill being a protector is relatively difficult to fine (or train),

Top STers of week 1 of 2024. Let’s see some more.

ST only players in 2024…

Schooler
Elliss
Dial
Pettus

The narrative that Bill and only Bill rosters special teams only players is probably the most overblown narrative of all with no actual basis in fact. Take a look at any team in pro football reference and go to the special teams snap counts and you’ll see the three or four guys whose job it is to just cover kicks and who get less than a dozen “real” snaps over a season. The funniest one was when I saw the paragon of roster building, the Baltimore Ravens, rostering old friend 27 year old Jordan Richards for a full season of special teams duty in 2020. He wasn’t there for his pass coverage upside, I’d say.

Just a reminder: in SB53, the Rams had twice as many players who played more snaps on ST than O/D as the Patriots did.

A lot of new names. I am glad we do not have Slater back again. A significant overhaul from last year's less than exciting crew.

Thank god Cam Achord is gone
