Mayock says Vollmer's perfomance was overhyped

This is a crock. On two of those "examples" Mankins comes over to help only because he has nobody to pick up. What is he going to do? Of course he's going to find something to do, to keep busy. This is not an intentional design.

But one good thing I saw is that Stanback is not afraid to be physical. that was a good chip he laid on Freeney to prime him for Vollmer.

I don't doubt that Vollmer had help most of the time, it doesn't diminish the accomplishment of stopping Freeney. It's as inconsequential as the argument of whether Revis had help or not - either way it was a great accomplishment to stop Moss.

One player's performance who was underhyped was Pat Chung destroying the gunner on special teams.

When it comes to reviewing tape, Mayock takes his job seriously. I think, as usual, we can trust him on this one.

Well there's nothing there that really implies that Vollmer didn't do a good job. They're just saying the Pats worked well to protect Brady by being creative to stop the pass rush. We didn't score 34 pts by accident. The protection was great most of the game.

Mayock is right, Vollmer was given help out there.. But lets be honest, Freeney and Mathis are the best two rushing DE's in football.. (there like 1 and 2 in the league for sack strip fumbles in the past 4-5 years)
It would be ridiculous to match up our tackles one on one with them.. This is why Zone blocking comes in handy..

Some nice blocking by Maroney, Stanbeck and Edleman, too while still getting out into the pattern.

Mayock should chart some of Lights better performances... This OL never succeeds without help, Mike.

Go chart your binky, Jay Cutler. :D

One lineman's performance who should be hyped more (in a bad way) is Kaczur.
He is absolute garbage. He is at the same time slow, and also not strong a the point of attack. He gets absolutely abused against above average or better DE's. We pretty much lost in 07 because of him.

Mayock is right. But how it's being presented as Vollmer's play is over-hyped is a tad unfair to him and the blocking scheme they implemented for the game. It's every OLs job to shade their assignment to help or to a spot so a throwing lane can be created or a run play. Some lines play more 1:1 matchups while others do more shade-to-help plass blocking.

IMO Vollmer got beat a couple times, but because of his positioning and by playing Freeney to help, he was sucessful containing him on 95% of the plays.

In the grand-scheme of things, as a pass-protection unit, Vollmer and the team shut-out Freeney.

Maybe as Vollmer continues to evolve and improve, he can handle a few more snaps w/o help and Kazur can get assistance ;-).

Actually we lost because of them, helpers included. There was pressure from the edges but even worse pressure up the middle collapsing the pocket. Neal went out and his replacement as well as Koppen and Mankins got manhandled. It's easier to counter edge rushers. You won't stop 'em every time but if you stop them 85% of the time you still allow Brady and the receivers to perform. Collapse his pocket entirely and all bets are off.

whatever. they kept freeney from ruining the game most of the part.Ask this question, with light at LT with help, would they have done any better ? .If yes then we should move vollmer to RT and take out kaczur .

neal went out in this game as well, something which i thought was significant inthe pass rush the colts started generatingin the 2nd half and also in our running game

I think the Pats should consider drafting a guard early next year, maybe 2nd round even. Whenever Neal gets hurt the protection up the middle seems to suffer a lot.

It's sort of a silly exercise without charting how much help Matt Light gets against Freeney.

Doesn't Light get help when facing speedy pass rushers too? C'mon.

That gets offset with how badly he bit on the pump fake that ultimately led to the Garcon touchdown. But I do agree, that play was great and he will improve drastically.

Actually thought that was a great breakdown. The help seabass recieved was really a funtion of the indy 4 man pass russ which leaves the guard free. Not a true double team but he could definatly cheat on the outside knowing he had help inside on the spin. Definatly not something I picked up during the game. I did see the chips and occasionly LaVoir lining up next to Kazur.

Not many teams rush 4 and generate the type of rush they do. pretty impressive

YouTube - Sebastian Vollmer had help on Freeney 36 out of 44 passing attempts

Yeah, I don't know. Mayock claims to have charted every Pats passing attempt. Kind of lame if you ask me. I'm sure Collinsworth would beg to differ......

This seems more of a function of giving Mayock more airtime than his ability to produce useful or intelligent analysis. The guy is great draft day. However, look at some recent "big boy" work:

Jay Cutler franchise quarterback

Wildcat is the ultimate weapon

Drivel over the Brady/ Ravens diatribe

A chip/ assistance from a free lineman doesn't constitute "help". "Help" means true double teams. It's just as plausible to say Mankins "helped" because they wanted to abuse Freeney even further.

Vollmer was a stud out there. Mayock needs to get back to washing Ray Ray's raisens.

Exactly. The spin move he highlighted was the one play where I saw Vollmer with bad technique. The misleading part of this is that Vollmer "had" help...not that Vollmer "got" help or even "needed" help. He could have shown about 20 snaps where Freeney tried an outside rush and Vollmer escorted him around the pocket and put him on the ground. Supporting this, Brady never set the pocket too deep and was quick to step up, so the plan was obviously to funnel Freeney and Mathis outside.

Rather than focus on help, he should focus on what Vollmer actually did. He got into his set quickly and almost never let Freeney get into his pads. That one spin move was awful (pads too high and didn't keep his feet under him) but I'll chalk that one up to a lack of concentration. Something for him to work on so that it never happens in the playoffs. It is OK to get physically beat occasionally, but can't lose focus or bad things happen.
