Mayo Made The Right Call, The Only Call - Brissett over Maye

I agree. But what happens if J.B., injury prone at times, gets injured within the first few snaps in Cincinnati? Does Milton start?

If they are so hell bent on Maye not starting, he should be QB # 3 going into the season.
That’s how Josh Allen stepped on the field as starter for the first time. Peterman got hurt and Allen took the starter role and never gave it back. Buffalo didn’t make AJ MacCarron the backup and Allen #3

I expect the same here.

That's Kraft's established timeline...it's what he gave Carroll and Grier and what he gave Belichick post-Brady. No reason to think it will change unless they go 0 for the next year and a half and the players all turn on Mayo or similar.
You make a valid point. That's a great stat. 3 years. I'd imagine ownership is more beholden to mayo than wolf or AVP.. if it all went really bad I can see one of them gone before mayo.

I've personally said if it looks ugly and Brissett is throwing picks, and we look like Bills alma Mata NAVY on offense mayo Will bench him and put in Drake.

I think expectations are always high, and I think 2001 and 2024 are similar.
I’m not understanding why shielding the franchise QB from adversity is a way to develop him.

The shielding isn't about development. It's about preservation. They are two separate issues.

It's a stretch to say that the expectations between 2001 and 2024, following the greatest dynasty in football history, are all that similar. But that's a largely qualitative assessment by qualitative measures. I expect we will just have to disagree.

Maybe "bad" isn't the correct word. But I'm gonna roll with it for now.

Why the facade? because Mayo never learned BB lesson one - the media is not your friend. keep your trap shut.
Transparency is overrated. It just gets you in trouble (perhaps gets you fired) and the media loves to hold your feet to the fire when you start yapping too much.

He isnt made of glass. It’s football.
And if truly they assembled such a crap team that they can’t put him on the field out of fear, then they need to clean out the front office.

I don’t think anyone’s expectations today are based upon the dynasty.
I don’t remember people back then saying it’s ok to not spend the cap and have a bad team until we have done drafts.

I am with Nikola on this one.

"And if truly they assembled such a crap team that they can’t put him on the field out of fear, then they need to clean out the front office."
I think thats definitely a possiblilty. This team may be the worst team in the NFL. I am a Pats fan thorugh and through. But if you ask me to name a single team that I can confidently say we are going to beat in the regular season I have nothing !!

And I agree that its about preservation. This guy Pats have commited 60 million dollars guaranteed, (salary plus signing bonus). And unless you can convince me that having a bad offensive line (and we have arguably the worst) does not significantly increase your chances of losing your starting quarterback, ideally he should wait at least to see how the o-line is holding up.

So my counter question would be if the alternative is he’s sitting on the bench how is that any different than having him injured?
Don’t play him so he can’t get hurt and not be able to play?

When I try to convince myself he might work out, I usually consider his elite player traits (leadership, football mind, grit, etc.) and extrapolate from there. Because of his limited coaching experience, that's most of what one has to go on. But it's a huge leap in scope from elite player to HC, and the set of skills is not the same. Even the coordinator to HC jump is big and many have failed. In time, he may sort himself out and learn enough to excel. Good year to do it.
There's going to be a learning curve with Mayo as HC, we're not in a situation where we're competing for a super bowl so it's a good year to get his feet under him. BB wasn't BB at first, Lombardi wasn't great at the beginning either, HC's have to learn on the job, how he does, no one knows but he has to have time to learn along with the young guys we have, we're at least a year or two from competing for the playoffs.

Funny how so many posters hated BB grunting and not talking after games and how they're fans and deserve more. Mayo gives more and that's not good either. Can't compare Mayo to BB, BB's the greatest ever, we can only hope Mayo is good.

You don't want a QB who is developing to be in a position where he's more worried about getting hurt and avoiding a rush caused by a horrible line. It's not a good mix.

Seriously the way you post, you act like no team has ever sat a rookie QB and had a good reason for it.

If the tears his ACL in the first game of the season, he aint playing till next season. If he is sitting on the bench and the o-line looks better he can come in anytime in the season. How is that the same thing.

Amen ...

Why isn't enough for May to play the equivalent of a full college season, 12 games, 5 through 16?

By then it will be clear to almost all that it is time for Maye to start.

And, to me, our record at the time is somewhat irrelevant.

He needs to learn to play under pressure. If he’s worried about getting hurt then he’s the wrong guy.

I can promise you no team has ever said let’s not play out qb this year because we don’t like our OL. This is madden playing, fantasy football loving thinking. Winning football coaches say they need to fix the problems and coach around them not hide from them.
Of course there are reasons to sit a rookie QB but none apply here.

He can tear his ACL any time, any year.

Not playing him because if you play him he could get hurt and not be able to play is the dumbest logic ever. Your way he never plays when he’s healthy.

No football coach ever would have that logic, it’s stupid.

Why rob him of the experience he gains in the other 5 games?
