Vikings' Matt Cassel will void contract, report says - TwinCities.com

Matt Cassel is leaving Minnesota by voiding his contract.

I actually think he will come back and backup Brady. I'd personally love it. He excelled well here and I trust him more than Mallet. I know he flamed out when he left, but at least he was comfortable here. I know we don't have anywhere near the weapons in place, but its not like he'd be coming here to start.

I'm all for cutting Mallett and bring in Cassell. We should understand that there would be a cap cost unless you think that Cassell is playing for $900K.

Meh.

I would happily have Matt back as a back up but I dont want to pay for it.

Mallet at his price is a much better option. If we were to trade him it would be nice to have Matt but still I wouldn't want to pay for it. Plus I would rather draft someone again and start training another potential Brady replacement.

Also he might want to try for a starters job though one may not be there for him he could chose a spot as a back up where he is more likely to have a chance at starting.

If the team opted for Cassel over Mallett, I'd be OK with it. No knock on Mallett, I just don't know what he can do, and I feel I have a good sense of what Casssel can do.

That's probably a smart move. Minnesota would probably either have cut him or forced him to renegotiate once most of the QB signings were finished. This way, Cassel is able to get out there while there's still money available. He can still re-sign with the Vikings if both parties want it.

I like Cassel. Liked him when this Forum was screaming for him to be cut summer '08. However Matt is looking for far more $ than the Pats need spend on their paltry cap headroom. He will not be a Patriot in 2014. Mallet is far less cap constricting.

Matt Cassel thinks he can get over $3.7 million next season. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson makes peanuts. What a league.

He's not coming back to the Pats. He apparently anticipates making more than the $3.7M he was due from the Vikings. It'd take a Welkeresque misevaluation of his market to be in the Pats' price range.

I'd take Ponder as a backup for a few years at low money, though.

I have a hard time seeing Cassel back in Foxboro as a backup. Whoever the backup is has to understand that this is Brady's team, and, for all practical purposes, poor health is the only way Brady doesn't start.

Yeah nope, he's not coming back here not sure why you think that. This gives him an opportunity to test the market which is pretty lacking in terms of quarterbacks, possibly land more money and chance to latch on to a team as a possible starter. Call me crazy but he should have been starting for Minnesota more than he did especially this season. I mean clearly he's not a franchise quarterback but I could see him signing with a team that drafts a rookie even going back to Minnesota.

Cassel has a shot at starter, he's possibly aiming teams with questionable starters like Jets, Titans, Rams. Makes no sense for him and the Patriots to come to an agreement.

It would be a very bad business decision for Cassel to come back to the Pats. Need to make the $ when you can and if he came back it would be for short money and his chances of being a starter again in the NFL are all but gone.

Houston makes the most sense.

BOB drafts a QB but has to school him on the NE system. Cassel knows the ropes and the kid can learn behind Cassel until hes ready to go.

He didn't opt out to come and back up Brady, he's going to a place where he has at least a small chance of starting. He won't get that here, he'll go to a place with a weaker starter or to babysit a rookie.

I'd love to know what his agent thinks the market is for Matt Cassell. What team is going to pay Matt Cassell $3.7 million to be their quarterback? He's too expensive to be a backup, but clearly not a solution as a starter.

He has a better than a small chance of starting in Minnesota than elsewhere.

In fact, my understanding is that Cassel would start until the new draft pick was ready, per Minnesota. It's a little strange. It may be Houston but only if they don't draft a player. Otherwise, it's the same as Minnesota. Last, maybe Minnesota expects a substantially low restructure.

I believe Minnesota had an option to pick up on the contract also, which they would have declined.

I think he will be either with the Texans or Browns next season. He could start in either situation while they groom the QB they draft this season.

I don't think the Rams are a spot. Fisher's stated Bradford's our guy after his ACL surgery. Along with your guesses the Jags can't be sold on Chad Henne, but I suspect he could wind up a Raider, although the Jets would not shock me. Texas and Clev pick so high, QB has to be on the radar.
