We hear that the news that RB Laurence Maroney’s shoulder was found to have “extensive damage” during a surgical procedure shortly after the AFC title game came as a surprise to the team. However, the surgery was a success and it is not a season- or career-threatening injury. While the team will give Maroney the benefit of the doubt due to his youth (22), size (5-11, 220) and toughness, it is a little concerned about Maroney’s durability after he suffered a minor knee sprain in late August, torn rib cartilage in early December and the shoulder injury late in the regular season. Considering that Corey Dillon is gone and that Maroney always has shared carries with another back, it’s no surprise that we hear New England likely will address the RB position in the draft for a second straight year.

Nowadays it just seems like it is harder and harder for running backs to stay healthy. It is only smart to have some good alternatives at the position, they don't have to be great, just good enough to fill in for a game or two.

By the way, does anyone know Maroney's health track record in college?

If there are lingering concerns at all - then it seems to make no sense that the ties to Dillon would have been severed as they were, unless Corey is simply burnt out as in toast.

I guess we will know at draft day......

even if Maroney was 100% healthy, the patriots need to draft a running back.

Or if he *gasp* didn't want to play for the New England Patriots anymore, hoping for carries when the second year RB goes down with an injury.

Of course the way that arm went up so often last year, maybe he was AFRAID that would happen??

Extensive shoulder damage in a RB is never a good thing.

Does anybody have any faith in Morris lugging the rock 20 times a game next season if Maroney goes down?

Yeah just look at Frank Gore. He is doing terrible (sarcasm). On top of tearing both acl's. As of right now the pats say maroney will be uneffected for the 07 season. Until proven otherwise why speculate? We need another back either way.

Maroney will probably get injured again in 2007. RBs usually do. We need a first-day RB in the draft, in my opinion.
