Manning touched on Brady's pursuit last week in Indianapolis.

"I saw where Tom said that in the midst of the season, he doesn't have much time to think about individual records and accomplishments, and he's concentrating on the team," Manning said. "I have to say, if and when he approaches that record, and it certainly seems like he's on pace to do so, my hope would be to handle it with as much class as Dan Marino did a few years ago when I came near to that passing record."

"It's off the charts," said Green Bay's Brett Favre. "The way he orchestrates his team is as good as any that's ever played. Then you throw in those guys around him, I think his offensive line, I don't want to say is underrated, but with Randy and Wes Welker and [Laurence] Maroney, [Donte'] Stallworth, and those guys [the linemen] don't get a lot of attention, but when he drops back, very rarely does he ever get pressure.

"If they stay healthy, they could break every record. Obviously, it starts with him, but every passing record that's out there. And I thought Peyton's would never be broken - of course, I'm sure people thought Dan's would never be broken. But he could hit 60 touchdown passes. That sounds crazy, but it could happen."

well..i read it the same way as u first but he is saying that he himself "manning" hopes he acts as classy as marino did when manning broke his record. In other words he says he will try to be as classy as marino was and congratulate brady or whatever.
He isnt taking shots at brady or something.

He (Manning) was referring to how he'd handle seeing his record shattered.

Nothing odd about Manning's comment, he hopes to be as gracious to Brady as Marino was to him.

As much as Pay-Ton annoys the hell out of me, he and Brady are pretty close and obviously have a ton of respect for each other.

But Patological was correct in pointing out that Manning had no reason or right to discuss "how HE hoped he would handle this". You and CTPatsFan are wrong. Brady's accomplishments thus far have nothing to do with Manning. Plus, no one CARES how HE would handle anything...get it?

When you discuss anothers accomplishments, you talk about that person. Not yourself. Unless he was specifically asked "what are your thoughts "if" Tom Brady were to break your record?"

But if he was asked "What are your thoughts on Brady's performance in 2007 thus far?", then he'd have no reason or justification for discussing how HE would handle it. If Brady breaks his record, it's only about Brady. Manning's reaction would just be a side-note.

I believe I saw the televised portion of that interview where Manning said that above quote, and while I can see how someone may interpret the printed portion of his interview as critical of Brady, FWIW, Manning's tone was very respectful, and there was no hint of criticism towards Brady in the least.

Manning is being classy in responding to this situation by
- appreciating Tom Brady
- appreciating Dan Marino
- downplaying himself (I hope to be as good as...)

Sorry if that offends the sensibility of some Pats fans who want to bash Peyton at every opportunity. All in life is not black and white (unless you believe Gregg Easterbrook ).
