Mangini never intended this to happen

Someone made the point earlier that all Mangina needed to do to end this thing at any point earlier in the week was to come out publically and dismiss it as no big deal. If Mangini had done this, the media backlash wuld have ended, the presure on the NFL would have subsided, and the punishment would have ben much more likely to be reasonable.

Unfortunately Mangina decided to be a punk rat instead.

There is no defending Mangini. Belichick is the only reason that rat f*ck is where he is today. The guy is a disgrace no matter how you cut it. If I was Belichick instead of shaking his hand after the next meeting I would punch him right in the kisser.

Personally? I believe it. If you watch the tape of the game, mangini was VERY upset during the game, before it got out of hand, after the altercation began (before halftime). I thought it was because the Jets were getting beat. Looking at it again? I think he was upset because he knew this could destroy a lifetime of relationships, and possibly his career in the NFL, certainly his relationship with his best friend, his mentor, his hero, Bill Belichick.
Were you able to type this without laughing? Because we can't read it without laughing.

Violating a league rule to get an advantage no matter how minor is cheating. On the cheating scale, I think it is a relatively minor offense since everyone is trying to steal signals in one way, shape, or form and I don't think that the Pats were going to use it more than to build a book on the Jets; but it is still cheating.

Sorry Rob, but it wasn't cheating. It was breaking a rule. It would have only been cheating if they had actually VIEWED the tape. They didn't.

Also, the tape was going to be used for future planning. Sorry, but I do believe that. And, considering what the league has allowed to happen in the past (Shanahan hiring people to videotape Chargers practices, teams by audio of other teams), the league looks friggin BAD for coming down on the Patriots the way they did.

Ok, he attempted to cheat.

I agree with you about the other part though. I don't see how they could ever have broken down the film in the 15 minutes for halftime. I do buy that the Pats were using it to continue to build a book on the Jets. I don't think it is a major offense at all and the media is making a bigger deal out of it than it is.

For some reason I missed that part of his post. Mangini was torn up because he was going to destroy his friendship with Belichick? What friendship? They both burnt their bridges a long time ago. Nothing more than Mangini apologist BS.

I personally think Mangini has played a far bigger role in the destroyed relationship between him and Belichick than he lets on, but likes playing the role of the innocent victim of mean ole Belichick.

mangini is now simply a rat in backpedal mode.

I really doubt that. Word is that Goodell was very upset that this whole thing ruined kick off weekend and that it happened only miles away from his office. I think if this was a league generated thing to make an example, they would never have done it on kick off weekend.

The league got exactly what they didn't want in this situation. Instead of talking about the first week of football and all the action from the first weekend, all anyone talked about was Belichick. That is bad business for the NFL.
And not only that...do you not think this will continue?? Pandorra's Box is open and who knows how much dirty laundry is coming out...

It was pretty obvious that the Jets leaked this story to Jets Confidential which was the real reason this whole thing got out of hand. If it was never leaked to Jets Confidential, the Pats would have been disciplined quitely. Goodell was upset that this whole scandal ruined opening weekend in the NFL which would never happen if the Jets didn't leak it.

As for Mangini not being a scumbag, all you have do is look at the Pete Kendall situation to see that the guy can be petty and vindictive. The Jets renegged on redoing Kendall's deal and Kendall complained to the media. This was wrong of Kendall to do, but he didn't hold out. Mangini went on a campaign to humiliate Kendall by first "accidentally" putting him into the rookie dorms, then demoting him to back up center eventhough he was their best left guard by far and Kendall hates playing center, and then he played Kendall well into the fourth quarter of the third game which is reserved for scrubs. Mangini showed that he clearly can be a scumbag.

I'm sorry, but I think it is spin by the Jets and Mangini to deflect the fact that their actions seem to have backfired against them since most of national writers are saying that Mangini is getting a lot of backlash around the league for being a Judas to the man who made him what he is. Ask Pete Kendall. He will tell you Mangini definitely has it in him to be a scumbag and this is becoming a partern with him.
Yup!!!! NO going back on this one..maybe he did not INTEND for this to be as big as this..but.....oh well...

Sure he didn't want this to happen, because this is motivational stuff that will be used forever.

Can you imagine how bad the Jest are going to get beat at the razor this year. The Pats players, wanting to prove they are good on their own, are going to be out to show the world they don't need to cheat and that last weeks win wasn't because of cheating.

Similar to Buffalo games in '04, only worse for the Jest.....

Mangini just awoke a very angry, p*ssed off, hungry bear............

Here is what I think about Mangini, aka Manjudas.. the ball boy taken under BB's wing who wound up being a head coach.

All of the press about BB and the divorcee was leaked to Rich Cimini, who is Manjudas friend, and that created a poopstorm.

Manjudas leaked this story to Cimini, who ran with it..

Was it intended to get this big, who knows.. it has created a ****storm of unparalled proportion..

Bottom line is BB will survive and be exonherated, Manjudas will get fired as all HC's do, and he is tainted forever as someone who ratted out a mentor and a genius for his own personal gain.

Mangini Right now is the rat of the NFL. I was even listening to ESPN radio early yesterday morining and they were calling him a rat. Tell ya right now, I would rather be BB and called a cheater then Mangini and being called a rat. That is the worst possible thing you can ever be called and known for. People hate Rats.

Tom Curran was on FSNE tonight and said he thought (info from mangini?) that the jets desperately tried to get their hands on the tape before NFL Security got it, to no avail, because the Pats security team wouldn't allow it.

To me, it makes perfect sense. EM wa trying to prevent BB from continuing his practice of taping (for future games?). BB didn't. EM tried to stop it by seizing the tape, and it got totally out of hand.

Could this be one reason BB looks somewhat calm in the intervews? Or why the commish was pretty lenient in the punishment? Did Mangini go to the commish and make his case defending BB? Did BB hear his side of it?

Honestly? I think this is the truth. It feels right to me. Mangini just doesn't have it in him to do this. He isn't the scumbag he would have to be to do this.
your theory is flawed because according to reports he notified the league, end of story, thats premeditation, also he could of warned bb he call the league if he didnt stop, which didnt happen either

Mangini did more than just blow wind in church, he took a dump in the first pew. Let him sit in it for a while.

Niiiice! That is definitely sig material!

Or maybe the Commissioner asked certain teams to look out for violations and report them. The Commissioner's office got exactly what they wanted, an example.

I wonder if the commissioner is happy with this result.

By clumsily handling an infraction of one of its 2000 rules, a rule which, on close inspection, is ridiculous because of its specificity (and I think the rule is in place not because of fear of "cheating," but because the NFL is bound and determined to control every teeny bit of video taken at its games), it has soiled the reputation of one of its finest coaches, cast doubt on the outcomes of its premier event, let the "stealing signals" cat out of the bag so all games are looked at with some degree of skepticism (except for Tony Dungy who is pure as the driven snow--just ask him), and moved the focus of the press and the fans from the games themselves to this manufactured scandal that shows no signs of abating.

Surely this could not be what he intended, could it?

Totally agree..did the Commish want this distraction away from foorball?? he blew ir big...so did Manjudas..

Every time I see Mangini, I think of Linda Tripp.

No we must continue to hate, hate leads to determination, determination leads to focus, focus leads to remembering what everyone has said, which leads to .... thats right, TACKLIN FUEL

I think this column has the best take:

http://www.chicagosportsreview.com/inthemeantime/contentview.asp?c=200810

excerpts said:
If you're New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini, and you're in the process of getting your ass beat on Sunday by the team you're hired to beat, whaddya do? Snitch on Bill Belichick, your old coach.

Let's put this on the table right now. Eric Mangini is a straight punk. Don't get me wrong, he's smart - but he's a straight punk. Now, why would I say this about a guy who's guested on the Sopranos? Cause the Sopranos ain't **** either, that's why.

See, I got beef with a dude who's so weak, such a little slimeball that he broke the oath that all the New England assistants to Belichick took; no taking head coach positions in the AFC East and I'll clue you in on everything I do.

The first thing Mangini does, knowing he betrayed Belichick, his maker, is wax eloquent about how he'll use his god's template with his god's blessing and imprint it on the ex-Shea Stadium boys in green and white. Hearing this allowed the tattooed love-boy metro-thugs to properly blunt the cries of treachery and slant the story of why Belichick was so frosty about the hire in the first place.

And people wonder why Belichick didn't want to look at Womangini when they met last season for the first time at midfield.

Fast-forward to last season. The Miami Dolphins upset New England, 21-0 in Week 14. Belichick accused the Dolphins of stealing their offensive signals. Zach Thomas all-but admitted it was true. Of course Nick Saban said it wasn't true, but even he was doing the hem-and-haw like he'd got caught with both hands in the cookie jar when asked about the allegations in a press conference.

The response to Belichick's charges were swift and harsh, especially those from the metro-thugs and their Big Box sports media buddies, the heads on sticks we all see at six and 11 p.m. They said Belichick was whining because his team got handled like Mandingo Club wives, that the luster had been wiped clean from his image as a class guy. They said it happens all the time in the NFL, so he should shut his trap and deal with the realities of pro football.

Fast-forward to now.

Punk boy Womangini's team is getting absolutely waxed by the Patriots, on the long road to a 38-14 drubbing. I watched the game - it wasn't even close. The Jets offense overall was ineffective, and the run game, in particular, was non-existent.

I swear one time I saw Tom Brady take the snap, take a seven-step drop, put the ball down, trot over to the sidelines and grab a cell phone from Tedy Bruschi, say hey to Giselle, trot back to where he left the ball and throw 50 yards down the field to Randy Moss, who looked like the Pied Piper leading kids to the slaughter as he was trailed by a Jets linebacker, a cornerback, and a safety as he caught a touchdown pass.

To say the Jets quit is kind. Late in the fourth quarter, several Jets offensive players were on the sidelines with towels over their heads -------- so they wouldn't lose any smoke from the "puff, puff, pass" party they were having on the bench.

Womangini knows he's going to get vilified, slammed - traduced - in the press come Monday. I can see him thinking on the sideline, repeating to no one, "WhatdoIdo whatdoIdo whatdoIdo?" The bulb went off, "Womangenius" style. Soon after, the alleged offender, Estrella, is accosted. Deflecting attention from a shellacking by snitching on his god is just incredibly, ingeniously, devious. If Karl Rove ever steps down from his position as master neocon muckraker, Eric Womangini should be the first name on the Rove replacement list.

This is the first real test for Roger Goodell as commissioner of the NFL. All his previous choices and punishments were easy. With this, he must balance the wants of his constituency, the owners, and their knowledge that the Belichick flap is nothing more than that, against the wailing of the metro-thug press members of New York City, the television talking heads on sticks, and the Internet blogger sloth. If he caves to the media's screams at the wailing wall of the NFL league office, Goodell will, from here on out, serve out a train wreck of a tenure as commissioner.
