Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

Could have won it all if Butler had a better 2017. However, the real reason we couldn’t finish was the losses of Sheard, Hightower, Long and Ninkovitch.

Zero snaps.

It's like if the titanic had hit the ice berg, and then a welder went to go fix it, and when he got there the captain was assessing the damage, and looked at the welder and said "you sir are 5 minutes late, and you smell of booze, get out of my sight!" then had one of the cooks try to fix it.

I don't give a **** if butler wasn't "keyed in" 2 weeks before the game. he should have been given at least a series after halftime to see if he could help get a stop, instead BB stuck to his guns, and the patriots never caused a three and out.

Butler wasn't "locked in" during Super Bowl week. He admitted this.

And I think belichicks judgment is better than yours. He chose the welders that weren’t drunk.
Of course you do have an entitlement to whine just as if you had anything to do with the team being in the Sb and have any qualification at all to know better what should have been done, or that you even know he facts. Carry on, this is becoming entertaining.

I don’t think not being “locked in” means you should sit on the bench for the whole game if your defense is springing major leaks. There had to have been something more than Butler not being “locked in” on the game plan.

locked in keyed in, idgaf. the patriots gave up almost 50 points with him on the bench. the team should have made an adjustment at halftime.

The question as to why BB benched Butler may never be fully answered, rumors of him breaking curfew and being under the influence notwithstanding. All we know for sure is that he got off to a bad start in 2017, possibly due to dissatisfaction with his contract, possibly due to physical problems, and improved his game as the season wore on. The proof of the pudding will be how he does with the Titans. Butler has the big contract he didn't get from the Pats and now is his time to shine. If there is any truth to the rumors of his extra-curricular activities, the evidence will surface in Tennessee. I hope the rumors are false and that he has a strong career with the Titans. I will always remember his game saving play in the SB.

It’s just not black and white like people want it to be, because people have no concept of the nfl and the type of decision making s Guy like belichick has to make.
People think belichick and Patricia hsve to hate butler or he had to have assaulted a family member and that’s just not that case.
People also have this misguided idea that the way to run the greatest dynasty ever is to just make capricious changes in the middle of a game that conflict with a decision that was clearly difficult to make because hey why not and in hindsight it couldn’t have hurt.

From everything we know there is no doubt for whatever reason butler was unprepared for this game. Sickness alone may have set him back. There could be other factors also.
For whatever reason it was so drastic that belichick decided to replace a 3 year starter FOR THIS GAME BECAUSE OF THESE REASONS. Given the gravity of the game, the status of the player for 3 years, and the difficulty of that decision, he had to be sure. Why would he revisit that decision during the game? If he felt butler couldn’t help the team why would that change later in the day?
Yes B.B. has not thrown butler under the bus. That isn’t what he does, and it is very likely that he wishes butler was healthy and dialed in and given the circumstances did what he had to do but isn’t ****ed off at butler.

I mean the player himself admits he wasn’t “dialed in” in PREPARING FOR THE SUPER BOWL. And fans want to ignore that and daycwd should play players who aren’t capable of it willing to prepare urgently for the biggest game of the year?

I'll go to my grave thinking it went like this....He was sick with the flu the week prior. He was behind in the gameplan/game prep and early in the week was perhaps still wobbly. It was said he was not getting all the reps in practice. I buy that. There is some dispute he was getting 1st team snaps. Whatever. Come Sunday close to gametime he was told he was not starting and he lost it. At that point, as it pertains to the gameplan and the matchups, BB deemed Malcolm to be unreliable.

I do believe the thought crossed Bill's mind to put him in the game but everything in his bones told him he was not going to play much better than Badman.

And put in the guy who wasn’t prepared to play? Yeah that makes a lot of sense.
Wow things arent going well, let’s put in the guy who scared us into not being able to use him all week.

They did make adjustments at 1/2 time. They didn't work either.

Agree plus the meltdown before the game probably had a major influence in deciding he wasn’t prepared to play.
People seem to forget that when bademosi was pressed into starting duty he was a hero here and people wanted him to remain the starter. But hey he missed a tackle, and of course B.B. should have seen that coming and butler would have made it.

I guarantee most of the same people trashing bademosi are the same ones who wanted him to start instead of Gilmore because that is all they do, pick out someone to blame abd harp on it like entitled little *****es.

The fans that have been driving me nuts are the ones who refuse to hold Malcolm accountable for not being ready to play.

And the people who don't seem to think making a half time adjustment to try and fix the defense is what is driving the butler supporters nuts.

I don't think anyone is pissed that butler was benched in the first half. Confused? sure I bet everyone was confused except the 8 people who think butler is the worst CB in the league. He should have had at LEAST a series in the second half to try and spark the defense, because i fail to believe that a player that played 97% of the snaps leading up to the superbowl, wouldn't be able to handle the "gameplan" which appeared to be just let philly score on every possession.

BB blind loyalists need to stop trashing Butler as if he was a horrible CB in 2017. He may not have been the 2015 pro bowl CB or 2016 all-NFL CB he was, but as CB#2 and even CB#1 with Gilmore out in 2017 he started and played 98% of snaps on a Pats defense that gave up the fewest points allowed from week5-17. This was with a pathetic front7 defense missing key players like Mayo. Butler was extremely good in 2017, don't try to claim otherwise.

PFF says opposing QBs had a 103.3 passer rating in 2017 when targeting Butler.

That's quite a few notches south of "extremely good". To put it nicely.

They did make adjustments. They put Badmosi in and put Gilmore on PHI #1 WR. There were a few more I'm sure.

I was ******** because a good CB was not playing. That lessened the team's chances of winning.

This is an example of fans not having all the information BB does. BB thought Malcolm was a mess. Thats it.

And his refusal to unbench Malcolm after halftime in order to to see if he could outplay the 4th stringer that got torched all game will be the reason this discussion will never end.

I've seen that stat. It's not good at all. With that said I bash PFF so I'm not going to use that to shred Malcolm.

With that said it is obvious Malcolm's play was uneven last year. He was still good but nowhere near the level he was in 2016 or even 2015.

Part of me thinks if he was having another All-Pro year BB would have played him. Because of the flu and his meltdown coupled with his uneven play during the season and the playoffs, he didn't earn the benefit of the doubt.

Badmosi only allowed one catch

Badmosi only allowed one catch

Rowe gave up 80 yards
Richards gave up 75

Either one could have sat for a series to see if Butler had better results. The fact of the matter is we will NEVER know. BB didn't go with the tried and true advice of "stick with what got you here"

Not happy with how someone did in practice, sure bench them. Then watching your defense go down in flames on the biggest stage and not at least trying your former #1 CB? Hubris.

Sure but Badman was CB4. That was what I was responding to.

If you want to kill BB for something its Richards. He has no right being in the NFL.

BB had his reasons. I understand how people struggle accepting that. I believe if BB thought Malcolm would have helped him win he would have played him. He didn't so he kept him on the pine.

Based on what Malcolm did and it was not without merit he was never an option. There were 2 mistakes; 1 what Butler did and I assure it was bad. 2 Dressing him when he was never an option.

The only explanation I have is that BB didn't want to embarrass/enflame the situation any further.
