I wouldn't say Bledsoe wasn't the guy, he got us to a super bowl that special teams blew, it's just that Brady was better, BB saw it in practice and when he played a few games with Bledsoe out some of us fans saw it. If TB was never drafted, maybe BB brings us to a super bowl or two with Bledsoe, we'll never know. Mac isn't TB, no one is but he could be good enough to get us to a super bowl. I'm sure BB knows more than us at this point, if he thinks he can get a better QB, he will.

Bledsoe was The Guy for the late 90s NFL. He is one of the best QBs of the late 90s. It was the league changed. Seven step drop pocket passers became obsolete with the faster defenses.

And if people are going to sit around for The Guy like many people are hoping for, they might be waiting for decades. The Bills did. So did the Bengals. The Guy doesn’t come around often.

Odds are the Patriots will have to have a non-elite QB if and when they contend again. It is still too early to tell if Jones is that guy or not IMHO.

The bad last 5 games of last year added to all the bad games this year have taken a toll on the fans. Last year Mac kind of earned a benefit of the doubt because of everything before the last 5 games. Add in Zappe playing well in his absence this year and I can understand where some people are coming from

Don’t forget, Belichick basically owned Drew in most of the head-to-head matchups and I sort of wonder how he really felt about the guy. Obviously, he was pretty confident shipping him off within the division, so that sort of tells us something.

That's basically my thinking as well. See what he does these next two weeks and then see what they do this offseason in terms of coordinator, possibly a real threat to compliment their other WRs. I'm sure they'll probably bring in another veteran QB and then see how competitive camp is and who steps up. I'm good with whatever/whoever as long as they fix the execution and they're consistently competitive next year.

That's sort of the frustrating part about it. The fallout took away the enjoyment in what Zappe did. It's fun watching young QBs develop, which is what made last year interesting and enjoyable despite coming up short. Same thing during the Cassel year in 2008.

You can't have two horses running a race, and it's nice to know you've got him if things turn and potentially end badly, especially since he's under contract for three more years. Otherwise, it would have been just Mac and a lot of uncertainty with only Hoyer behind him.

The Zappe games were the most "fun" me and my kids have had all year watching the Pats. Yes, we know it's about winning (and Zappe WAS 2-1 as a starter), but damn it was a good time watching him play and the team play. My genius 16 year old went out and bought a red Zappe jersey as he was caught up in Zappe Mania!

The next two weeks are irrelevant really. The only way it would mean anything is if Jones plays really well despite all the problems with coaching and other players' executing or Patricia pulls his head out of his arse and starts calling a real offense, the o-line protects, and the receivers run proper routes and look back for the ball when they supposed to so we can see what Jones can do in a real offense (whether he fails or succeeds). Personally, I don't see either happening. At least not consistently. He might be able to play well against the Dolphins' defense, but I don't think he will against the Bills' defense.

I know it wasn't going to happen because the Patriots didn't have a QB2 in Hoyer's absence but I still wonder what the Pats could have gotten for Zappe if they put him on the block before the Bears game. That game was before the trade deadline so they could have done it.

I bet it would have been more than the 4th round pick they invested.

You mean now? Dunno. ROTY of the year candidate last year, not a great season this year even if he's poorly coached but still on a rookie deal. Maybe we'll find out soon.

No under your "theoretical" scenario of trading Zappe before the trade deadline. What do you think a team would've given up for Mac at the trade deadline?

Kinda wonder if they might take a stab at Baker Mayfield. Garoppolo is the obvious pick but Mayfield is probably cheaper. We know they liked him in the draft and he's still young.

Hard to say. Would other teams see this as BB giving up on a young QB who is struggling this year after a decent rookie season? They might so why would they give up much? OTOH he's still on his rookie deal. It probably wouldn't be a great idea to sell low anyway and this would be selling low on Mac. The Zappe scenario would be selling high at least until the Bears game happened and you always want to sell high.

The better time to trade Mac and sell high was last winter if the Patriots wanted to change QB but not sure why they would have done that.

That's correct. If you add his normal attempts and yards per game for that game, then the numbers are much closer. That game was an outlier and he hasn't been the same player since.

Bledsoe had 4 INTs and a passer rating of 46.6 in that SB. He was awful that entire postseason (<200 Y/G, 3 TDs, 7 INTs, 54.3 passer rating). In three postseasons with Parcells (6 games), Bledsoe had 5 TDs and 12 INTs, you can't win anything with that kind of quarterback play.
