MA Question #1 - Major League Sports Impact

I'm hoping this will not become a political football but here goes.

I'm very concerned that this ballor inititive, if passed, will impact my beloved Pats and every other Major League franchise in the state. A ten percent tax on income over !M is not a small amount and I think it will have major drawbacks in retaining players and obtaining players. I'll refrain from offering my political opinion but I think this is a disaster for the major league sports industry in Massachusetts.

People that make more than 1 Mil, are smarter than the politicians who try and take their money, they will move (at least for tax purposes) out of the state or come up with other way to avoid the tax. With telecommuting this will be almost impossible to enforce but will cause more people to leave the state.

But yes, it would be a factor in FA signing here.

There are already massive differences in state tax rates, and we rarely hear of teams struggling to sign or retain players because of that.
The local teams will figure out a way to compensate for it.

California also lost a congressional seat for the first time in its history. California lost $8.8 billion in gross adjusted income in 2019 from more people leaving the state than coming in. About $1.5 billion of that went to Texas.

Our Book of Exoduses has recorded over a hundred entries including small, medium, and large companies as well as notable celebrities that have left. California was also rated by the moving company, U-Haul, as the most moved out state of the union in 2020."

And these are CA government figures that more than likely have some degree of bias.

Most people who make more than $1 million annually are doing so in a way that isn’t taxable salary (regular income), but in speaking to this thread, there is no way for an athlete to avoid paying those taxes.

I'm not interested in population statistics just the impact of what is the beginning of a progressive tax that will impact the Patriot players. MA taxpayers have resisted every attempt to put in a progressive tax but the ballot question is intentionally deceptive and the advertising is outright dishonest but I hope my fellow citizens that have an interest in our team, and other teams in the state, see through the thick veneer of obfuscation.

This is only really a “problem” (and I am uncomfortable calling it a problem) with the NBA because of how contracts are strictly constrained by Max Contracts which inhibits any team from being able to outspend another.
