Mike Lombardi, who is one of my favorite NFL analysts out there, was just on Bill Simmons' BS Report, and he said the above quote about Rex Ryan a little after 58 minutes in. Podcast can be found here:

Makes some great points, bringing up the fact that everyone conveniently forgets, which is that the Jets had to be handed 2 games to get up to nine wins, and then just lists off all of the major eff-ups that Rex has made already this offseason. Don't have to read much between the lines to know that he's predicting a bit of a meltdown out in Jetsland this season, and I totally agree with him on all counts.

Not sure it will happen (the meltdown).

but, if it does, I will naturally revel in the failure that is the J-E-T-S...it really is a joke that never gets old

a real statement would be that Rex "Bit off more than he could chew." that would be classic irony there.

Yeah, it really does stretch the limits of credibility, doesn't it? I mean, I don't even think that's possible. Literally, anyways.

If they in fact sign TO Lombardi will have to do an addendum on this piece...

The New York media really makes this story far more entertaining than it should be. With victories, it will be "Dallas Here We Come!" With a few losses, "Crash and Burn!" The fact that Rex plays to the New York media will make his possible ride on the Titanic this season all the more entertaining.

Re: Lombardi on Ryan: "He's running a clinic on what not to do after you win 9 games.

Would anyone else still be entertained watching them go 0-6 or something like that and all those egos blaming everyone else.

Now that would be a reality show

I'd enjoy that almost as much as I'd enjoy a 6-0 start by the Pats.

Lombardi is right. This is a team that backed into the playoffs last year. Yes, they got hot in the playoffs, but it was in part of easy competition (the Bengals) and teams possibly sleeping on them. Now they have a bullseye on their backs that are usually reserved for the Super Bowl winner. Everyone wants to beat them now because they want to shut them up. The NY media and fans are now thinking anything short of a Super Bowl is a disaster. So much undo pressure on this team that could make them implode if they have a slow start.

And the pressure will get even worse after Hard Knocks airs.

It seems to be OVER a little after 58 minutes in...

...

Yeah, I'm amazed that Ryan allowed them to bring so many wildcards into the locker room after what was a very good Playoff run at the end of what had been just an OK year with a shaky rookie QB. I'm waiting for one of the new egos to make some snide comment to the media about the Sanchize after he throws a few picks early in the season.

It's more like 36min. in.

Re: Lombardi on Ryan: "He's running a clinic on what not to do after you win 9 games.

the jets are every bit as iffy at RB as are the pats, and they have a rookie at LG who played OT in college......so expect the offense to lean on sanchez a whole lot more.

decent WR's, but the jets passing offense schieve more on broken plays than anyone I can remember. sanchez will still put up plenty of picks

the jets DL is the weak link on their defense......I don't believe they will hold up this year, and they are still can stop the short passing game, and the guys they added on defense aren't going to help that. everyone will still talk about how revis stops the #1 WR on any team, but opposing QB's will QB's throw for 300 yards and guys like welker, collie, garcon......

also, the jets (as are the pats) are playing an endless list of good QB's compared to the stiffs they played last year.

Not to mention the chargers kicker missing 3 field goals

Re: Lombardi on Ryan: "He's running a clinic on what not to do after you win 9 games.

If the Jets start out slow, look for them to rebound mid-season. I think 8-8 or 9-7 is realistic. The rest is hype.

The schedule would definitely make this possible — if they don't implode after the slow start.:rocker:
