Goodell and the league office were flying high back and got away with anything they wanted back when everything was he-said-she-said and they were controlling the slow leak of information (often misleading or outright fabricated) that was dripping out to the media. Because they had total control over both the discipline process and the documentation behind that process, they could abuse the process and then make false statements to the media with no repercussions, while Brady and the NFLPA had no recourse. But Goodell flew too close to the sun, and now the information seal that was protecting them from a PR nightmare has melted away. Even if the NFL wins the case in court and Brady has to serve his four-game suspension, they can never gain back the absolute control they had over the narrative.

And it all never had to happen. Goodell and Pash and Vincent willed this to happen by deliberately undermining due process every step of the way. If they had never done that, this never would have gone to court, and the NFL would never have had to face this public embarrassment.
