Lewis' Blitz Pickup Garners Praise From McDaniels

Ian Logue

One of the biggest topics of discussions so far has been the amount of hits that quarterback Tom Brady has taken, but Dion Lewis received a little bit of praise on Monday for his part in keeping the veteran upright Sunday.

@Ian , your article says Brady was sacked 4 times but he wasn't sacked at all. The pats sacked McCown 4 times.

Although I agree that Lewis has been good in pass-pro and blitz pickup, I don't recall Brady being sacked even once by the Jets on Sunday, and none of ESPN, CBS, NBC, FOX or NFL.com recorded a sack of Brady. Also, ESPN recorded only 4 hits on Brady, which seems about right.

I noticed a smaller back chopping down a blitzer, but didn't know who it was. Really obvious great play.

IIRC, Burkhead had a great one earlier this season and at least one in the pre-season. I'm guessing that he must've been fairly decent at it in Cincy, since he was often on the field for significantly more snaps than he had carries or targets.

Interestingly, in his two games with the Pats this season (KCY and NOL), Burkhead was on the field for a total of 18 snaps. He had 5 carries and 7 targets - 12 touch opportunities in 18 snaps - 67%.

Gillislee is 79 opportunities (carries only) on 130 snaps, 61%.
Lewis is 37 opportunities on 93 snaps, 40%.
White is 65 opportunities on 211 snaps, 31%.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Burkhead's percentage once he returns.

My guess is that they will line him up in the slot more often than they did in Week 1 and Week 2.
