RIP to a NFL legend.

My condolences go out to his family and friends.

Luv Ya Blue...

That cowboy hat of his was as iconic as Bear Bryant's houndstooth fedora, or Tom Landry's. Bum's beer belly, boots and big western buckle helped complete the fashion statement.

The NFL is better because of him. He really WAS a good guy, and a pretty decent coach too.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Yup, the boots, 10 gallon hat and hub cap buckle. The NFL was more about personalities back then unlike today where every HC must adopt the NFL uniform.

When I hear the name Bum Phillips, the first thing I think of is the only Patriots playoff game that I ever attended in person, which was also the franchise's first home playoff game. That was on New Year's Eve in 1978, in the aftermath of the team imploding after Chuck Fairbanks announced he would be leaving for Colorado after the season, and Billy Sullivan suspended him.

It was a cold, dull gray day, which was fitting for what turned out to be a miserable game. Despite coming into the game with three broken ribs, Dan Pastorini had no problem completing just about every pass he threw, while Steve Grogan was throwing as many interceptions as completions. Houston went up by three touchdowns by halftime, and then in the second half Earl Campbell ran all over the Pats.

Phillips stood out easily on the sideline with his iconic hat, and the crowd mockingly serenaded Fairbanks a farewell as the clock ticked down in the 4th quarter. It was a bitter defeat; the Pats had the best offense in the league that year, and it came just two years after the Ben Dreith game.

The Oilers were my second favorite team in my youth, and it was mostly because of Campbell and Phillips.

Rest in peace, Bum.

I always thought that game was lost when Fairbanks quit.

Yeah, the Patriots went from being the team with the best chance to knock off the Steelers to having no shot no matter who they played once that happened.

They were good, but the team from two years before that was better.
