Larger game-day rosters?

Mike Felger of the Boston Herald and 890 ESPN Radio made a great point during our appearance with him on Thursday regarding the potential increase in the game-day active list from 45 to 47.​

The change, if approved by owners at the 2007 Annual Meeting in Phoenix, might encourage teams to carry on the 53-man roster two more game-ready veterans, instead of using those spots on young players who aren't quite ready to get between the white lines.​

For veteran receiver-returner-cornerback Troy Brown, who reportedly wants one more go with the wideout-wild Patriots, those extra two game-day spots could be the difference between the team saying "no, thanks" and "hell, yeah." ​

The change also could justify more teams carrying a kickoff specialist or a long snapper. Or, in the case of the Cowboys, a holder.​

Romo jokes aside, I think this is definitely a good idea, whether Brown comes back or not. [It also increases the possibility of the Pats drafting certain players that some of us here are big on. ]

A great rule cahnge that I hope gets adopted. Another advantage is it gives some of the younger guys more of an opportunity to see some field time every game rather than if there is an injury to a starter that they could replace (ie. Jonathon Smith, Bam Childress)

This would be good for all, consider a player who is coming back from an injury who they do not to play full time, but could be available for situational duty. This may be beneficial for someone like Troy Brown..

With all the injuries I wouldn't mind seeing the NFL increase roster side a touch as well. 55 players perhaps? I can't imagine after the last few years Kraft would object to something like that.

I still cannot figure out why limiting the game day roster below 53 improves the product that the NFL delivers to the consumer. Change the rule and change it now.

I agree 100% - the injury factor, at times, really waters down the product. Can anyone come up with a single reason not to open it up a little??

I certainly believe this would favor NE - as we tend to get everything possible out of every single player, including our practice squad guys, so any edge that can be gained by superior coaching has to be a huge NEP advantage.
