King: Pats explore moving up

I think people on this board are dreaming to much. It would be absolutely unfair if Brady was going to throw to Moss, Welker, Crabtree and Galloway Even if we would play with the Lions Defense from last year, we still would outscore opponents by 40 points.

I think A Smith is a real possibility and i believe Maualuga is an option. Maybe Malcolm Jenkins. Either way, i would love for them to trade up. I don't think it will be Crabtree, but hey it's BB, so we never know

I think that KC picks Raji or Curry and that leaves Jackson to be available in the 8 or 9 slot. I really think that is who the Pats will target and maybe ship Sey for a #1 in 2010.

Wasn't the hot rumor not too long ago, that BB was in love with Arakpo?

It seemed at the time, that it was waaay to early for any kind of smokescreen. Maybe it was a genuine leak? I think Michael Holley was the on saying it too... Which lends credence in my mind.

Trading Seymour for a #1 is STOOPID.

People are looking for flaws. He's the best player in this draft, I fully expect him to be arrogant. You really think he'd come in with a bigger personality than Moss?

Crabtree's character is fine. Word is that Mangini didn't like his attitude Also he's tight with Michael Irvin and his posse (which makes sense, but actually IS kind of a red flag to me). But pundits that are moving him out of the top 10 are insane.

Pats need defensive help this year, period. If there's a drastic trade-up, the only players worth it to the Pats are Curry and Jenkins.

The #23, and the #47, are not enough to jump 15 spaces, into the top 10. It's too far a drop to #23, from #8 for the Jags, and too little compensation regardless. The generic chart shows a 640 point difference between 8 & 23, with the #47 pick being worth 430. Maybe with the 560 point #34 pick, we could wiggle our way into #8, but who wants to give up the #34? I certainly don't. I think the #34 is going to be where a handfull of first round talents slide. Plus, #34 is where teams will be willing to move a 2010 1st rounder for.

BTW, picks 8-12 is where I would think teams would want to be in this draft, with the parity in talent at the top.

Peter King is a proven idiot and liar. You think BB would tell anyone his pick is a surprise?? Yeah, sure.

If the pick is such a bloody surprise why can't they gett his magic/surprise player at #15 or #170?

What's sad/funny is all you guys scampering around assuming its true.....

Guys? What's with all this WR and RB talk? BB proved the best way to staff you team with those guys is get ones that are proven tough/injury free for RB, and fast and tough for WR. The draft is a crap shoot, who cares if the old guy is a step slow, he can play and does play, for reasonable money, want another Chad Johnson? Not me. I want guys that can actually play, and if not fit needs this year, fit them next year.

This needs of '09 and '10 ('10 is much bigger then '09, but we have less resources then - but more needs) have to be largely met this year:

OT, OG, DL (2?), TE, OLB, ILB, S, CB

they have to get guys ready to play in '10 for the most part. In '09, give me a OLB, ILB, S, and developmental OT, DL - and one of the following G, CB, TE, DL

Next year you get your RB, WR from FA.

Agreed... on offense : get OT. But even better, screw "O" until 3rd round. Defense wins.

If it was for Monroe, Curry, or Jackson, I'd be pretty pumped. All of them would upgrade us at a position where we could definitely use it.

Doesnt matter if the story is true or false, its a great situation for the Patriots. They would be getting a bargain if this trade goes through and if it doesnt it still helps because another team most likely will now over pay to get another Gholston.

I personally would love to be picking at #8. Although Curry would be a huge reach I think the upside from the players there are huge this year.

I think you are right - the confusion created just from the news that BB is interested in the top 10 is messing everyone up. It's like swimming in the ocean and finding that a great white shark is hovering nearby - the waters suddenly seem much more dangerous.

Christ Mortensen just said that if the Pats do trade up in the top ten, a possible target could be Crabtree.

David Yudkin from football guys (same dude that first reported the cassel/vrabel trade) is saying this....

Yudkin has heard from several places now that the Pats appear to be trying to move up, but Yudkin thinks that NE may be trying to move up to trade the pick they get in a package to the Panthers for Julius Peppers. (With the usual caveats that they can't fit him in under the cap still in play.) The Panthers just shelled out a lot of money for Delhomme and Yudkin thinks that Carolina can't break the bank on Peppers as well.

I have heard rumors circulating from people that know way more than we do that they don't think the Peppers deal is dead and buried and that the Pats are still unoffically talking to the Panthers about it. I'd give those people more credit than the run of the mill web site rumors, but I'll still believe it when I see it.

Also, a commenter at profootballtalk.com echoed the same thing...pats are trying to trade in to top ten to trade to the panthers....

I wonder if that's true ... trade the #23 and something else up to a top 10 pick and then trade that for Peppers? Makes a lot of sense if Carolina are holding out?

Could still end up with Peppers, Will Moore and Barwin on the first day

Based on the reporting, it seems likely BB has negotiated for a pick in the range reported. (By which I mean he's talked deal, not that a deal has been struck.)

What's more, there's little reason for him to do so unless he's really interested in making the trade.

HOWEVER, there's no reason to rely on the reporting as to which player he most wants. That could be total smokescreen or speculation.

How funny. This time last year, it was rumored that the Pats were trading down with New Orleans. Knowing the Saints wanted Ellis and Cincy wanted Rivers, other teams could deduce who they were targeting. Now they are rumored to be trading up with Jacksonville and there isn't much of a clue as to who they would target.

Jenkins? Crabtree (please no)? Curry or Jackson (may be gone like Dorsey)? Oher or A. Smith? Raji?

All of them are options which should put all other GMs on tilt.

And I'll assume that this trade doesn't happen till the pick in question is reached and one of the target players is still there. A team like Jacksonville or New Orleans needs to figure out if the players they want will likely be in the spots that NE gives up in the trade.

A top 10 pick for Peppers seems like overkill. Could probably get him for 34 and 89. Maybe we pick up a top 10 player (Curry if he falls) and trade for Peppers as well. Unlikely, but not impossible. Peppers-Curry-Mayo-Thomas would be a sick LB group behind Seymour-Wilfork-Warren.
