Josh McDaniels and Bill O'Brien one year later - all good

A year ago much was made out of old friend Bill O'Brien taking the Penn State HC job and Josh coming back as the OC. Both took big risks with their careers and both appear to have achieved success.

Judging the results of the 2012 Patriots offense and the complete lack of any calamitous or controversial news out of Penn State, it's all good.

Bill O'Brien took the biggest risk in football taking over the worst imaginable situation, not knowing if the program would get the Death Penalty. Not only did the kids who stayed play hard for him, undermanned Penn State heads into the new season with some optimism that they will be able to compete in the Big Ten or whatever they call that conference now. O'Brien is a rock. When the time comes, I hope Mr. Kraft considers him as a possible successor to Belichick. He can definitely handle the situation.

Josh McDaniels stepped back to a job he had theoretically outgrown, didn't burn his bridges and excelled in 2012. He has a big challenge on his hands in remaking an offense after the Hernandez debacle and the Welker defection. He should be up to it.

It's reassuring to think that good could come out of so much adversity.

Penn State getting the death penalty would have been a disaster for the NCAA. So I'm not sure if the risk was big there with O'Brien as most knew that the NCAA wasn't THAT dumb. The risk with O'Brien was losing top rated recruits to other schools once the bowl ban came into play. That's where I agree he took a big risk, but hopefully the Penn State athletic department can be patient with him because they still fielded a competitive team last year, given the circumstances.

The McDaniels move, IMO, was a no-brainer for him. I'm glad he's back.

On the flip side for O'Brien, while the defense may have issues, he appears to be having no problems whatsoever recruiting offensive players (I wonder why ).
