I assume that you mean that this is the only way he avoids no longer being part of the Patriots organization. Technically a player needs to be cut and clear waivers first before he can be signed to the Practice Squad.

He ran a 4.3 40. There are plenty of teams that would take a flyer on a WR/KR who is that fast. Most teams don't have 5 capable WRs.

4.3 doesn't necessarily mean he's a good football player. There's plenty of unemployed 4.3 guys out there.

4th round pick last year injured in his first year but came back to assume KR duties and made a couple of plays showing his speed and agility. Too early to say he won't develop so still some upside. The same reasons you would put him on the PS.

Not saying he won't develop, just not sure he'll do it on a 53 this year.

I don't think the new rules really matter in Boyce's case since I doubt he'd clear waivers. Someone like Carolina would almost certainly claim him. Tiquan Underwood is currently their WR5, so Boyce would make their 53 at a position of pretty exceptional need.

I would cut him and I think he gets claimed. I was only offering an argument for why he would not make it to the PS. He reminds me a bit of Brandon Tate. Could be a KR and a WR4-5 someplace, but not here.

I too would favor cutting Boyce with the plan of putting him on the Practice Team. He is as good a Practice Squad prospect as Tyms or Gallon.

But, yes, I would expect someone (likely CAR) to sign him off waivers. The bottom line is that there are teams whose worst WR is even a worse prospect than Boyce. As we know, being a returner will increase his value to someone.

Agreed, it's HUGE news for young guys trying to work their way toward an NFL career. I really like this change, I think it patches a hole in the developmental framework.

Most of the newly eligible will be on the roster, but an added complexity to everyone's roster decisions. (A player has to be released prior to being added to the PS so it is not an alternative to "being cut"). I think Boyce is worse than 50:50 to clear waivers, but we fans tend to think more of our players than the league seems to. THe problem with IR is he wouldn't get the reps he needs to improve.

Yes exactly, as much of the discussion lately has touched on whether Boyce will even make the team now. I had no idea he was PS eligible.

Right now it depends on how BB feels about Boyce as player is he worth carrying on the regular roster others Teams are going to face the same tough decesions with their guys. Losing Boyce wouldn't be the end of the world for the Patriots he's well behind the other guys. Also a sure Practice squad candidate WR Jeremy Gallon is a probably a better WR than Boyce right now minus the Speed. But what good is Speed if one cannot catch? ie...Josh Boyce. WR's like Gallon have historically done well for our N.E. Patriots guys who can set up Defenders run precise routes and get open rather quickly those attributes are already in Gallant's repertoire. The PS being extended is really a Great thing for our Patriots you cannot keep everybody.

I'm looking at Boyce as a guy who will develop into a Manny Sanders type, but with even more speed. Not a #1, but a very solid #2-3. There may not be room on the Pats for him with Edelman and Amendola (we have our small receivers), but people here are way undervaluing the kid.

I watched him at the practice last year, and he was leaving cornerbacks in the dust on his cuts. plus, the new contact rules make a guy like Boyce even more dangerous.

Something to keep in mind with the Pats: when Brady finds his binkies, no one else gets a look, even if they're open. That's my one knock against Brady.

BrianTyms have not played like a Practice squad candiate have you been watching the games?

Brady's binkies in order of progression 1) Gronk 2)Edelman 3)Amendola 4) Thomkins 5)Lafell. Now that I thought about it see ya Boyce its like we never knew ya.

I don't know why GMs have such trouble with this. There's absolutely no need to waive anybody, ever.

Click on the Player you want to trade or get rid of.

Click on the Team at the top of the list and ask for a 7th round pick in trade.

Now looks at that Team's interest bar, if its red, then just move on to the next team.

Once you find a team with an interest level that is yellow or green then you've found a team that will trade you for that player you were about to put on waivers.

Try seeing if that Team with green interest will give you a 6th round pick instead.

Profit.

When you're done, offer a 2nd round pick for a team's 1st round pick. Some team is bound to accept.

With the change moving the kickoff back to the 35, and basically eliminating the KR game, Boyce needs to be more than being a decent KR, to take up a spot on the roster. Dobson, KT are also on rookie contracts so he needs to outperform them. Amendola and Edelman have long contracts and I don't see them going anywhere. (Lafell is here for this year too). So basically he needs to prove something as a WR6. I think the team has other needs elsewhere at this point.

How about putting him on in-season IR when he gets painful hang nail? That way if amendola, edelman, dobson and gronk are all injured again we can use boyce instead of signing the likes of austin collie again.
