I'm thinking Mayo and Hicks might net us comp picks.
Respectfully submitted, Brother PennSylvania, but I would hate that, much though I love Draft Picks.
Akiem Hicks is a guy I actually mocked to us a couple Years ago, a young Beast with tremendous Potential in our Scheme, I believe. And Jerod Mayo is a guy I'd be looking to lock up today. I believe that he's ascending to something very close to his former level of Excellence and yet could be locked up at a substantial Discount relative to'is True Value to this Team, due to his recent Injuries and Playing Time.
I'm always advocating locking up guys earlier rather'n later: There's obviously more Risk in doing so, but it seems a smart Trade Off to me. We probably could've signed Shifty Shane Vereen a year earlier, for instance, for a cool Million less than the Giants ultimately paid him a Year later, when he hit Free Agency.
Whether or not Vereen would've been worth it has been a matter of Debate ~ one that I'm not trying to revisit ~ but I generally get the strong impression that Players respond very favorably to such Overtures, as with Gronkowski, for example, often agreeing to substantial Discounts in return for early Security.
All of which is to say that History mildly suggests that we possibly might lock up Mayo for less today than he'd be likely to cost in March. That is of course entirely speculative on my part, mind you: I have no Idea if they've talked or not, any more than I know if the Patriots tried to lock up Vereen two Years ago.
But I'm speculating that Mayo might go for some kind of 3 for $7,500,000 kind of Idea, with Options and Bonuses for SnapCounts. We might even get'm for less than that, for all I know.
Nor would I expect that the Market will drive his Price up, should he hit Free Agency: He's a Veteran with lots of recent Injury History, about to hit 30. There probably won't be a lot of Demand.
But if there is ~ and it's certainly a very real Possibility, if we go on a glorious Super Bowl Run and Mayo plays an increasingly prominent part in it ~ then it would only take one Team to offer'm say 3 Years at $15,000,000...at which point that Compensation Pick would look mighty tasty, indeed!!
