Jerod Mayo

I'm thinking Mayo and Hicks might net us comp picks.

Respectfully submitted, Brother PennSylvania, but I would hate that, much though I love Draft Picks.

Akiem Hicks is a guy I actually mocked to us a couple Years ago, a young Beast with tremendous Potential in our Scheme, I believe. And Jerod Mayo is a guy I'd be looking to lock up today. I believe that he's ascending to something very close to his former level of Excellence and yet could be locked up at a substantial Discount relative to'is True Value to this Team, due to his recent Injuries and Playing Time.

I'm always advocating locking up guys earlier rather'n later: There's obviously more Risk in doing so, but it seems a smart Trade Off to me. We probably could've signed Shifty Shane Vereen a year earlier, for instance, for a cool Million less than the Giants ultimately paid him a Year later, when he hit Free Agency.

Whether or not Vereen would've been worth it has been a matter of Debate ~ one that I'm not trying to revisit ~ but I generally get the strong impression that Players respond very favorably to such Overtures, as with Gronkowski, for example, often agreeing to substantial Discounts in return for early Security.

All of which is to say that History mildly suggests that we possibly might lock up Mayo for less today than he'd be likely to cost in March. That is of course entirely speculative on my part, mind you: I have no Idea if they've talked or not, any more than I know if the Patriots tried to lock up Vereen two Years ago.

But I'm speculating that Mayo might go for some kind of 3 for $7,500,000 kind of Idea, with Options and Bonuses for SnapCounts. We might even get'm for less than that, for all I know.

Nor would I expect that the Market will drive his Price up, should he hit Free Agency: He's a Veteran with lots of recent Injury History, about to hit 30. There probably won't be a lot of Demand.

But if there is ~ and it's certainly a very real Possibility, if we go on a glorious Super Bowl Run and Mayo plays an increasingly prominent part in it ~ then it would only take one Team to offer'm say 3 Years at $15,000,000...at which point that Compensation Pick would look mighty tasty, indeed!!

Mayo's a great guy and very good player when healthy. But, we need to extend 5 "key" starters over the
next couple of years; Collins, Hightower, Butler, Ryan and Chandler Jones. Won't be enough $$$ for Mayo or Hicks. Prob can't afford Sheard if Chandler Jones cashes in with a big pay day.

Bleu cheese would be acceptable. I hope @upstater1 agrees. You need to give your kids a talking.

You guys are lucky it's still 10 am and Im not thinking of food, or I would have killed your ratings with several "DISAGREES" and "DISLIKES."

You don't know how much they'll cost, any more'n I do.

And you're making a lot of Assumptions.

Personally, I don't advocate stripping the Roster bare to sign all the top guys. Trading one'f'm for Draft Capital would free up Cap Space and allow us to retain far more substantial Depth of Talent.

And even if we do keep all those guys, you don't know that we couldn't squeeze the others in.

Chandler Jones for a swap of 2's in 2016(with a crappy team), and a 2017 first?? Detroit???

I like Hicks a lot. He was a draft binkie of mine also. I rather keep Sheard than Jones.

Man, we are lucky we still have this guy!
Hightower and Freeney injured, its good to have a veteran back there getting things in order.

I hope we can keep him after this year, we need depth.
He is currently on the cap at $11.4mm next year. $5.4mm savings if cut before June 2, and $7.7mm savings if cut after June 2. There is very little chance he stays in his current part-time role at $11mm in 2016.
His restructure was really a deal like Wilfork's or Revis's, designed to enable the current year at a prohibitive second-year cost.

The Freeney injury gives us a chance to see more of Mayo, and he has consistently outplayed Freeney. Hopefully the Mayo-Hightower-Collins combo is available for the playoffs.

I hope Mayo plays like a "crazed LB" as this is his "contract year", as you can call it....

Convert him to safety!

Jeff Howe with some nice stat-scraping here. Kinda validates what people have been seeing out which has been more of the old Mayo.

As for Mayo, he looks more like himself with every passing week. In coverage, Mayo surrendered completions on his first five targets of the season for 65 yards, but he has since only surrendered one 5-yard catch on five targets and he has one pass breakup. Since Week 9, he also has one sack, one quarterback hit and one drawn holding penalty, so he has getting in the backfield with more success. Mayo also has three run stuffs in the last four games after recording one in the first nine games. So he is coming along nicely.
