They are excellent. However, year after year…the Steelers show they know how to draft, train, and execute 5-star play from the LB position. If I had to put a team together RIGHT NOW, I would not take Ray-ray + Tsizzle over Harrison and Woodley. Or even put Timmons in there…any combo of the 3.

I don't know of a decent 1-2 ILB punch in the league whose team fails to make the playoffs too often....you have 2 great LBs and your defense is always formidable.

For the record, IMO the best LB combo in the NFL is whoever you think the two best players are out of Timmons/Woodley/Harrison. The Steelers have the best LBs in the NFL, on the whole, and I don't think anyone else is even close.

They have the potential to be, but as now they are not. but Mayo is one of the best LB's in the leauge (top 5, IMO only after Patrick willis and Ray lewis)

Re: Jerod Mayo & Brandon Spikes: NFL's Best Combination

Is Mayo going OLB now?

I think ppl need to focus less on technicalities or empty signifiers (ie. OLB vs ILB, 4-3, 3-4) and realize that Mayo is still playing behind the LOS and within the tackle box....

This is reason # 986739b. as to why the shift from 4-3 to 3-4 isn't as huge as people are claiming.

Remember, we won a SB in 01 with a 4-3. Once we got a true NT (didn't have one in 02) we made a pretty easy switch to a 3-4 and won a SB again with mostly the same front 7.

11 people voted yes? I think homerism may be at an all-time high.

Thank you…but I can't take ownership of that. When I talk in the first person, I am referring to the Patriots. I like and respect the Steelers and love the city of Pittsburgh…but I am a citizen of Patriot Nation, not Steeler Country.

It's a huge change.

It's a huge change.

As usual Deus, you've won almost everyone over with a well put, cogent and convincing counter argument.

Kind of ironic considering our HC is even more tight lipped...yet even he went out of his way to explain why the 3-4/4-3 difference is more hype than reality.

Well, when you are superior at drafting to Belichick, as Deus clearly is, you get to write your own rule book.

When you need to turnover your personnel to fit the scheme, it's a huge change. I love how people are buying into BB's downplay, though. It helps further demonstrate just how much people are willing to swallow around here.

Everyone here used to be so very proud to be fans of one of only two 3-4 teams, and would talk about what an advantage that was. Now, because the team's heading into 4-3 territory, it's suddenly become almost meaningless.

Still butthurt because you got your head handed to you in the other thread, I see. It's sad, really, to see you hold a grudge over something that trivial.

You think the fact that the 3-4 isn't such a rarity in the NFL these days has something to do with that?

Sure, man, thats exactly what it is.

You burned me up so bad I can't sleep at nights

Well, either that or your posts are alot of fun to reply to.

You roll with whichever option makes you feel best.

1) They would have acquired other personnel anyway because much of the front 7 wasn't getting it done.

2) IMO, It actually was an advantage at one point because of the ability to "blitz the formation" within base and get an unblocked rusher on the QB. I don't think it happens as often. But that's me working from rosy memories.

3) A fan's perspective - as widespread as it may be - doesn't change the facts that Bill just commented on. And "downplaying" my balls. If that was Bill's intention then he wouldn't say a word. He doesn't need to explain himself to the media. What he did was rightfully call out the media on their BS.
