I said it in another thread but I think if we trade Jimmy G it will be for picks in next years draft when we actually have a 1st round pick and where there are more blue chip prospects and a dearth of decent QB's. We could trade Jimmy and our first to move up to the top 10 potentially.

In the meantime, Garropolo can keep growing his reputation on the Pats sideline without really doing all that much, but being solid backup if needed.

Trade Jimmy for a 2017 1st and bring in Hasselback to back up Brady.

I am pretty sure nobody in the league will give up a high 2nd-rounder for Jimmy, but I think if I were a QB-needy team, I'd consider it this year for a few reasons:

- There are no sure-fire franchise QBs at the top of the draft, and a weaker QB draft than usual.
- Goff will almost surely go in the top 10, leaving the trio of Lynch/Wentz/Cook going high in the draft.
- None of those 3 guys are really great, so spending a first on one of them potentially busting is unappealing.

So why not spend that first on the DL or OL (Best player available), then use your second on your QB? And if you're spending that second on a QB, would you rather pick whichever of those 3 might be left (and if none, reaching for Hackenberg), or spend it on a high-upside guy like Jimmy? He's got a few years in a pro offense, he's learned from the GOAT, and he's got just as much upside as any of those draft picks.

Downside is he's got fewer years on his contract at a low price, but it gives you 2 years at around $1M a year to decide if he's your future starting QB, and if he is, you don't mind paying him.

If you're the 49ers and Kaepernick wants out, why not spend your top 10 pick on immediate help, then flip the 2nd for a mobile QB for Chip? You could potentially get something back for Kaep as well.

They could, but it would leave a pretty big hole at a very important position. It's generally understood that a rookie QB isn't exactly going to master the offense from the months of May--Sept during his first season in this complex system, and the uncertainty of Brady's court case makes the situation even murkier. Who would start and lead the team, should the NFL win?

I think he provides much more value to us as a backup who has been studying film and going through practices/drills in our system, than say, taking another shot at a 3rd round pick a year from now. Just my opinion.

If they're going to trade him for a 2017 pick, they damn sure better wait until the court situation is resolved at a minimum. If they're pondering a trade, it's probably in their better interest just to wait until the next offseason.

Possibly, although a 2008 Cassel is much different than a 2016 Cassel.

At any rate, it doesn't do much to instill confidence in me, personally--although others may feel differently.

Would the following be legal? The Pats arrange a trade in advance with another team. The team picks a player whom the Pats want in the first round. After the pick, the teams trade that player for Garoppolo.

Not that I want them to trade Garoppolo, but it would be the most massive GFY to the League I could think of.

I would think that the player would have to be signed, before he could be traded which might take a lot of time, but maybe that is OK.

I would love such a deal because it would allow the Patriots to stick it to the NFL, but such a move would not exactly endear the Patriots to NFL management but at this point who cares
