January 17 is an historically slow day in New England Patriots history. With zero games ever played on this date and not much in the way of January 17 birthdays, here is a slightly longer biography on a relatively obscure former Patriot.

Happy 37 birthday to Trevor Reilly
Born Jan 17, 1988 in Valley Center, California
Patriot OLB 2016-2017; uniform #51
Signed to the practice squad on October 20, 2016
Pats résumé: 6 games (1 start); 10 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss

As a 16-year old youth, Trevor Reilly set the Guinness World Record for fastest time eating a 7.5-ounce white onion at 1 minute and 35 seconds, shattering the former mark of 2:45. Reilly earned a football scholarship to Texas Tech, but instead accepted a two-year Latter Day Saints mission to Sweden. After returning he was a walk-on at the University of Utah: a 22-year old redshirt freshman. By the time he was a senior he was married with two kids.

During that senior year his wife discovered a lump on their 9-month old daughter. Two days later she had her kidney removed, and had to undergo chemotherapy for a year; it has been in remission since. The next year Reilly was selected by the Jets in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft.

After two seasons with the Jets - and some interesting moonlighting as an Uber driver - Reilly went on IR. After reaching an injury settlement with the Jete, Reilly was a free agent. Two days later the Patriots signed him to their practice squad on October 20, 2016.

Miami signed Reilly to their full roster off the Pats PS on December 19. The next season Reilly did not survive final cuts, and the Dolphins re-signed him to their practice squad. He was released October 10, 2017 and two days later the Pats again signed Reilly to their practice squad. A few weeks later he was promoted to the 53-man roster after Harvey Langi was injured in an automobile accident. Then in late December Reilly returned to the practice squad, to make room for former Steeler James Harrison. Reilly was released on February 12, 2018 and never signed with another NFL organization.

In 2018 Reilly returned to Salt Lake City, working as a grad assistant and part time scout player with the Utes while taking one last class to earn his degree. He also signed to play for Dennis Erickson with the Salt Lake Stallions of the Alliance of American Football. That minor league operation folded before its first season was completed. At least Reilly fared better than some teammates who suffered injuries during play, left to pay their own medical and rehab expenses when the AAF declared bankruptcy.

Trevor Reilly appeared in six games with the Patriots, from week eight to week 15 of the 2017 season. He logged 57 defensive snaps and 94 special team snaps with the Pats.

Happy 76th birthday to **** Blanchard
Born Jan 17, 1949 in Waukesha, Wisconsin
Patriot LB, 1972; uniform #49
Signed as an undrafted rookie sometime before training camp, 1972
Pats résumé: 14 games (1 start); one interception

**** Blanchard spent one season with the Patriots, in the forgettable 3-11 1972 season for John Mazur and Phil Bengston. He also played for the 1974 Detroit Wheels in the short-lived World Football League.

August 11, 1972:
AMHERST, Mass., Aug. 10 —The New England Patriots remain three football teams, one that has gone, one present and one pending. Upton Bell, the effervescent general manager, said with a glint in his eye that he is out to pass George Allen of the Redskins in the number of trades made. Bell has made 32 since taking command of the Patriots' front office last year and, by his count, he still trails Allen. “But I'm going to catch up to him any day now,” said Bell, who has a telephone, a TWX machine which links all 26 National Football League teams, and an icebox in his darkened dormitory suite here here at the University of Mas sachusetts, the club's training site.

“I also have a clock like Spassky and Bobby Fischer. I set the clock and get on the phone. My technique is to wear them down,” he said, with regard to the coaches and general managers who receive his calls.

“Next winter's draft is go ing to be a great one,” said Bell, a former scout for the Colts. “We'll have about 25 picks.”

The marketplace is still wide open and Bell hopes to acquire for John Mazur, the head coach, three more contributors: an offensive line man to supplement such old standbys as Mike Montler, Jon Morris, Len St. Jean, and Tom Neville; an outside linebacker because Mazur is leading with rookies, **** Blanchard and Mike Price, plus a running back to replace Jim Nance.

From the 1973 Patriots Media Guide:
Pro Career: One of the top surprises of the 1972 training camp, as he made the club after being signed as a free agent . . . played in all 14 games . . . great promise.

College Career: Converted to strong side linebacker at Tulsa after high school career as a receiver . . . three-year starter, two-time all-Missouri Valley choice . . . made 310 tackles during career.

5 More Wheels Sign, 4 From CFL - Detroit Free Press - Tue June 11, 1974
"Britts, along with Blanchard and Mike Taylor, will give us linebacking as strong as any in the league. All are outstanding players."

Blanchard, as a free agent, was the most pleasant surprise in the Patriots' training camp two years ago, winning a starting assignment early in the season. But he sat out last year, after being cut.

Happy 67th birthday to Kevin Donnalley
Born Jan 17, 1958; from Red Wing, MN
Patriot S, 1981; uniform #23
Signed as a rookie free agent on October 20, 1981
Pats résumé: one game

Kevin Donnalley was a 1981 7th round (171st overall) draft pick out of North Dalota State by the St. Louis Cardinals. He did not survive roster cuts, and was signed by the Patriots. Five days later he appeared in the Pats week 8 loss at Washington on October 25 - and was placed on injured reserve on October 31. Donnalley was with the Patriots for the entire 1982 offseason before being released ahead of the start of the regular season, on September 6. He never caught on with another NFL team after that, though he was with the Philadelphia Stars and Washington Federals in 1983-84 in the USFL.

After his playing days ended, Donnalley worked as a secondary coach for North Dakota State from 1977-1980, and as an assistant at Montana State from 1987-91. The following year he became head coach at Division II Fort Lewis in Colorado - where he compiled a 2-18 record in two seasons.

With a career in coaching no longer much of an option, Donnalley switched careers and took a position as a management trainee for Border States Electric, the nation's sixth largest electrical products wholesale distributor. He was far more successful in this industry than he was as a head coach, working his way up the ladder to Area Manager of their western states.

One Draft-Pick-Trade related birthday
Happy 26th birthday to LB Hamsah Nasirildeen, born Jan 17, 1999 in Concord, NC
September 11, 2019: Traded by Jets as their 2021 6th round pick (186th overall) to Patriots for WR Demaryius Thomas.
April 24, 2020: Traded by Patriots as their 2021 6th round pick (186th overall), along with 2020 4th round pick (125th overall, James Morgan) and 2020 4th round pick (129th overall, Cameron Clark) to Jets - so the Pats could move up 28 spots in the 2020 draft, and select
a sorely needed tight end (that did not work out at all) - 2020 3rd round pick (101st overall), Dalton Keene.

Ingalls later worked as the head coach at UConn from 1952-1963, after previously serving as the head coach for the 1944 Lincoln Army Air Field Wings, compiling a 6-1 record versus other military bases' football teams.

Len Grant (Jan 17, 1906 - Aug 6, 1938)
Born in Boston; grew up in Dedham; Dedham HS; Dean Academy (now Dean College, Franklin MA)
