Hi, draftniks. For those who don't know me, I was the moderator of this draft board for years until life got messy and time got tight so I decided I had to go cold turkey on football. Well yesterday I happened to read an article speculating on the Pats' targets this year, and got the itch. I miss it, and I want to circle draft day on my calendar again! The trick is, I'm now hopelessly ignorant. I no longer know the team, let alone the draft prospects.

Could any of you indulge me with a little cheat sheet to get me started? Any insight on the schemes or philosophies of the new regime that point toward or away from certain types of players? Any positions on the team that look decent at first glance but could actually use an upgrade? Any players who are board binkies, or love/hate lightning rods? Deep positions in the draft?

Yours in humble cluelessness,

Welcome back. I hope life has settled for you.
There will be much better info from others coming, but Vrabel seems to favor smaller and faster LBs and bigger corners.

Talent is still welcome at every position but the defense especially has been solidified during this free agency so far.

OT is a glaring weakness at the moment and likely will necessitate a very early pick being dedicated to it.

The draft is deep at RB, DL, TE, and shallow on early round OL and WR where, unfortunately, we need the most help. The final win of the season to knock us out of the first overall pick hurt a lot.

Welcome back. It’s an interesting draft. Not as much high end talent as other drafts and a weak QB class compared to other years.

The Pats biggest needs are at Tackle and WR, but unfortunately no bonafide studs at either position. If the 2 top players, DE Carter and CB/WR Hunter, are gone by our pick at 4, we then have to decide do we pick the consensus top tackle, Will Campbell, who’s wingspan/arm length are red flags. Most posters hope we trade down.

Very briefly.

Firstly, welcome back.

We're almost certainly switching to a 1-gap 4-3 scheme with minimal blitzing. Mike Vrabel has talked about the defensive line winning on the other side of the line of scrimmage.

In the secondary, the likely most commonly used coverage will be quarters or cover-4.

Offense is up in the air but we're used to a McDaniels offense so we can get some idea.

Most divisive prospects are easy: Will Campbell at LT (short arms and short wingspan) and Teteroia McMillan the WR from Arizona. People are worried he's N'Keal Harry redux because he won't run a forty before the draft making people question his ability to separate.

The draft is very deep at RB and DT. This is arguably the deepest class for both that I can remember. EDGE is good too although quite top heavy. It's a poor class for LT and WR, especially at the top which isn't great for us as those are our biggest needs.

Aside from TE, it was a pretty spectacular combine with quite a few record breaking prospects and positions. 10 RBs ran under 4.5s which is a record for example.

There are two elite prospects in pass rusher Abdul Carter and CB/WR Travis Hunter and one QB certain to go top 3 so we need one more QB to go in the top 3 to guarantee us one of the blue chip prospects. It's not guaranteed there will be a 2nd QB although one is possible.

Obviously the Mac Jones experiment didn't work out which led to BB going bye bye!

Last year wasn't much better but at least we Maye have found our QB.

Vrabel seems to have everyone excited but that could all change once he's had some games under his belt. I would have preferred a complete fresh start but we shall see. He brought Josh back for a 3rd bite at the apple. They've kept Eliot Wolf to just fetch coffee hopefully!

Most people will tell you we need a WR1 that will take the "top off the defense". Same old story! We've drafted 2 WRs in the past 2 years. None have really caught on but the 2 from 2023 show some potential. The problem is nobody has patience. The RB Rhamondre was overpaid like a few others last off-season and only regressed in playtime due to fumbulitis.

Speaking of regressing the defense took the biggest fall. They can't stop the run and they are susceptible to big plays which never happened under BB.

The true biggest problem with this team is at LT and OL as a whole. They've ignored it for so long and now it's just a turnstile. There's been many occasions where the defense has a guy in our backfield the second the ball is snapped!

You probably heard the future Pats HOF, David Andrews was just cut. I hope like heck that they draft at a minimum 3 OL in April. It's not looking like a great class of tackles but there's a few decent developmental projects. But it would've been nice to have added one in Free agency.

Part Two

It's a little difficult to get a gauge on Mike Vrabel's draft philosophy because it's not clear what control he had over the draft in Tennessee. However, he has focused on culture and character in FA and also the relationships the other coaches have with the players we've signed. Every one signed except the one big signing Milton Williams, was on a team previously coached by one of our current coaches. I think the only college team we have that link to is Boston College although there might be more I'm unaware of.

I'm expecting a heavy offensive draft with WR, LT and the interior OL being key positions of need although I'm hoping to see us take advantage of the deep DT class. We stocked up on quality defensive players in FA but did very little on offense.

There may be some LTs falling to the back of the first round so there's questions about whether we trade up from 38 into the back half of the first round. Ozzy Trapilo, a RT from Boston College is a 2nd-3rd round prospect with some heavy connections to the current Pats through the coaching family so he's a possible for a LT conversion too.

In the first round, the hope is that we get either Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter. If neither fall to 4, the hope is that there's a trade back but because there are no blue chippers after those two guys, the prospects of a trade back are slim. After Hunter and Carter, there are issues with most of the other prospects that have had us scratching our heads:

1. Will Campbell - Had been the consensus no 1 LT prospect pre-combine but he has sub 33" arms and a wingspan so short that no LT has been drafted with one so short since records began in 2001. Many think he'll only be a LG but he has excellent character and athleticism.

2. Tet McMillan - a 6'5" WR with amazing hands but very questionable long speed which he won't put on record.

3. Armand Membou - A RT from Missouri who has excellent tape and elite athleticism for the position, but has never played LT before.

4. Shemar Stewart - An EDGE from Texas A&M who put up Myles Garrett like numbers at the combine. But his production just isn't there with only 4.5 career sacks so he's a real projection.

5. Ashton Jeanty - RB from Boise State who just put up one of the best ever college seasons last year but of course the value of drafting a RB so high is questionable.

6. Tyler Warren - TE from Penn State who has been given the nickname Baby-Gronk because his play style isn't that different. Again there are questions over value and need.

7. Mason Graham - A DT from Michigan. Was considered the other possible blue-chipper in this draft. Excellent tape and production against both the pass and run. But he came in underweight at the combine which has given pause to some. Additionally the signing of Milton Williams in FA has lessened the need and value of the pick.

Ozzy Trapilo is such a throwback name. Sounds like a Ron Erhardt offensive lineman.

My binkies:

Mike Green EDGE Marshall

Aireontae Ersery LT Minnesota

Tre Harris WR Ole Miss

Shemar Stewart EDGE Texas A&M

Willie Lampkin C North Carolina

Jayden Higgins & Jaylin Noel WRs Iowa State

LeQuint Allen RB Syracuse

Damien Martinez RB Miami

that's probably enough lol

Nope lol I forgot about...

Neyor WR Nebraska

Teslaa WR Arkansas

Arroyo TE Miami

And of course...Upton Stout CB Western Kentucky

And Caleb Rodgers OL Texas Tech lol

@bakes781 if the Pats draft one of your binkies who do you want it to be? Don't think of needs or realistic opportunity, just the guy you are pulling for the most.

Welcome back. Vrabel and D/C Terrell Williams are probably moving to a 1 gap penetrating defense, so this FA period has been spent mostly obtaining the players to execute their defense. Christian Gonzalez has proven to be a very good man corner. Vrabel and FO signed Carlton Davis who is another good man corner. In theory with 2 stud man corners and good pass rush the QB should be forced to get rid of footballs relatively quickly thus leading to bad decisions and hopefully turn overs.

As has been stated the Offense has needs on the OL and at WR. The problem is that there are not any great OL or WR options in the top 5. Travis Hunter is a CB/WR that played both spots full time in college. People seem to be torn on where he will play in the NFL, he said he wants both. He reminds me of Garrett Wilson in the way he moves, I think he is a bit raw from never 100% focusing on WR (sky is the limit, imo).

IMO, the OL is a more crucial need because getting up to average would be a huge improvement.

Ideal world is a trade down, imo
