01 ~ I love Donta HighTower, but Mass Millions for a guy who's increasingly susceptible to Injuries, due to'is enormous Frame, and would paralyze our Cap Space??

02 ~ I love Logan Ryan. I stood by'm when virtually everyone was dumping'm, not so very long ago...But he's good, not Great...Mass Millions??? I don't think so.

03 ~ LaGarrette Blount. Never liked'm. He's grown on me. But he remains a PowerBack with questionable Power, who can't Block or Catch, and whose Acceleration through the Hole continues to suck. He's gonna Get Paid. Give'm Mass Millions??? Hell, no.

04 ~ Martellus Bennett. Ass. Reformed nicely, hereabouts, but he's aging, he's still a Prima Donna, and he's certain to get OverPaid. He's Injurious, and he's aging. Pass.

05 ~ Jabaal Sheard. Always had 1st Round Talent. Might very well Get Paid as such.

That's no less than FIVE potential 3rd Rounders!!!

Alan Branch, Michael Floyd, and Barkevious Mingo I'd keep, if reasonably priced.

If I'm running things, our Salary Cap room is vast.

Any one team can get at most 4 comp picks, regardless of round. IMO, Hightower and maybe Ryan will be the only ones possibly high enough for #3s anyway but two #3s would be a nice consolation.

No overall limit -- 11 were issued this year. An individual team can only receive 4 comp picks though, so that's the Pats' limit.

Overthecap.com's understanding (based on AdamJT13's prior work) is that a player needs an average annual salary of the top 5% of the league's players in order to potentially qualify as a 3rd rounder.

those 5 will not get contracts that would garner a 3rd rounder.....Hightower for sure and maybe Ryan......the rest will get 5th-7th

and with all that cap space, gotta see who they sign......

Ryan and Hightower, imho, are the only locks for a 3rd rounder if they leave. Bennett will be close. Sheard and Blount will be lower round picks and I expect the Pats to be active enough to cancel some of them out.

I would add Harmon to that list as well. He'll get a larger contract than Blount.

I think you're on the right track @Off The Grid. My guess is we let most of our players walk. We've already brought back Devlin, and we're in talks with Branch. Sign them, and I'm happy. I'd like to have Ryan back, but if he can really get 10 - 12 million a year, as reported, then he should jump at that chance. Good for him.

We'll do what we always do. Depth signings. Older FAs looking for a ring. Some odd draft picks who end up contributing (and some who don't). And at the end of the day, despite the hand-wringing, we'll still be one of the last 4 teams, with a shot at glory.

We have to reset our cost-sensitivity a little bit due to the huge rise in the cap over the past three years. If a player was worth 9M three years ago, we need to think of that contract as 12-13M now, just because of the cap numbers going up.

I hope we retain Hightower, Branch, and Sheard but the gut reaction here to the numbers required isn't going to be pretty. Blount, Ryan, Harmon are IMO much more replaceable. The replacements are going cost more this year too than in the past, though, unless they are draftees.

A reminder: teams have to spend at least 89% of their cap over the period 2017–2020, so they have to spend most of that cap room on someone(s) at some point.
