Is John Clayton on ESPN a complete idiot?

Although I think John Clayton is a moron, I do think the Colts will be alright for the next season. It is seasons down the road that they may run into problems.

Manning is due a roster bonus of $10 million that can be converted to a signing bonus and be spread out over the life of his contract. Although if they franchise Freeney, he will eat up all and more of Manning's cap savings.

They can free up some room with other manuevers, but pushing money back into later years on older guys like Harrison and Glenn could be a risky thing for future cap room. Those guys aren't going to be playing like top players at their position for very much longer although they get paid like it.

The Colts aren't huge players in free agency and typically try to draft and grow their talent. I think losing their second round pick will hurt them as much or more than their cap room.

I think the cap will really start affecting the Colts in about two, maybe three years. Many of their bigger contract players will be hitting the meat of their contracts. Harrison could easily fall into the too expensive to keep and too costly to cut category after this season where he isn't playing up to his contract, but the cap hit in cutting him will be great. Even Jerry Rice started to slow down exponentially in his mid thirties.
