Interesting comments from Heath Evans about Mangini

I'm going off of memory....

But didn't Mangini tamper with Matt Chatham, supposedly tamper with Deion Branch, and then snuck off without returning his playbook and/or video library?

There definitely was tampering, but it was said to be between Tannenbaum and his NY lawyer friend who was Deion's agent. Once Deion was given permission to seek a trade to settle the stalemate NY had to jump in and offer him a deal (as they had supposedly led the agent to believe they would, which was the basis for his claim that Branch deserved to be traded). What they did though was offer less than required compensation (a second rounder). We might have been forced/pressured by the league to do the deal anyway because of the grievance Deion's agent was threatening to file. But then Seattle publicly entered the fray and said we will give a first...

As for the laptop, it was company property and by the time the team returned from Denver the locks on Eric's office had been changed and his access to the facility was blocked. That's how much Bill trusted him before the video incident even occurred. Eric's ego was his undoing, here and thereafter.

How dumb do you have to be to steal a laptop with files on it that you want rather than just copying them to another machine and returning the original?

This guy wasn't a thief. Thieves are smarter.

Eric probably believed that the laptop and any files on it were as much his as Bill's, after all this is a young guy who sold himself to Woody, with an assist from another under the radar genius in impatient waiting named Tannenbaum, as the guy who could out Belichick Belichick.

It was all about ego.

Daboll had to wait a year. Mangini wasn't allowed to hired much of anything when he took the JETS job. That was part of the JETS deal on his even getting it. Daboll was another impatient ego. He was pissed when he got passed over for the OC in waiting position by Josh. So when his contract was up after 2006 Eric got him the QB coach gig on Schottsie's staff, not that he did anything with it. Then when Eric got canned and mindmumbingly got another HC gig, he took Daboll to Cleveland as his OC. Not that he did anything with that gig either. He somehow landed in Miami this season. Although any credit for Moore emerging after Henne went down is given locally to their QB's coach. Impatient guys who though Bill was keeping them down have a fraternity all their own. Rob Ryan who ran away to Oakland when he felt blocked by RAC and when that didn't work he joined Eric in Cleveland in 2009 and Jeff Davidson who ran away with RAC to Cleveland because he felt Josh unfairly passed him are also charter members. I think he was last Tice's assistant OL coach in Minny last season.

Wait, I know he's Rex's brother...

...but I don't think Rob Ryan has an axe to grind with Bill, nor vice-versa. Rob's decision to go to OAK was covered in Education of a Coach (or was it Patriot Reign?). Anyhow, Bill spoke glowingly of Rob, recalled a few good anecdotal stories about his insight, and thought he earned the chance to be a DC....and even spoke highly of him to OAK. Bill also specifically mentioned, quite definitively, that if an assistant coach has earned a promotion, and it simply cannot be granted in-house, then he'll try to do what he can to facilitate the process and certainly won't try to block it.

That's simply the path of an NFL coach.

Yeah, that would make more sense than thinking he was "getting away with something". The behavior is more consistent. I'd buy into egotistical, self-indulgent narcissist.

This is not meant as an attack, but a serious question. Would you prefer a baseball-style hiring moratorium: teams may fire coaches between the end of the regular season and the Super Bowl, but no hiring or interviewing (except for in-house candidates) until the Super Bowl is over?

I think that that would be an excellent idea.

I just happened to tune into the last few minutes of the interview on WEEI. He said Mangini, got permission from BB to interview for Jets job. He said that Mangini came back and started recruiting coaches and players for the Jets instead of helping them prepare for the playoff game against Denver. He sounded very bitter about it too.

Oh good - something else we can blame on that rat! (although really, it was the atrocious reffing that really did us in. I still cringe when I see Jeff Triplette calling a game. Can't believe he still has a job).

Link to the audio?

Anyways, Eric had his son named after Bill. Screw Eric.

Mangini had passed Ryan on the road to replace RAC. And beyond that, if the Ryan boys could be happy doing what comes naturally they'd be manageable. But they have delusions of grandeur and blind ambition, not to mention big credit grabbing yaps... like their old man. Rob was blocked here all the way to the top. Eric still had a shot back then, but he blew that in a hurry.

Yep. Stand corrected. He went to the Jets in 07.

The Rat has learned some tough lessons hasn't he?

"Don't bite the hand that feeds you"

"When leaving any former place of employment, swallow the book of matches before you decide to burn that bridge down"

This is way off topic, but it cracks me up when Triplett has to announce the infraction and it is holding, or as he pronounces it, "ho deen." He's a bumbling hick.
