Insightful article by the Athletic - How the Pats took down the last undefeated team.

Not only did I say this offseason the Pats had the defense to match up with Buffalo, but it was the best in the division. The Pats secondary matches up with their lack of WR's and the front 7 wasn't allowing Allen to run around like it was 2021. Barmore and Williams are earning their paychecks stifling opposing RB's and pushing pockets into the QB's faces.

This win last SNF was not a 2021 wind game fluke. With that said, Buffalo is still a force as long as Allen is at QB.

Insightful??? They stayed disciplined, contained the running game, forced Allen to go where he was less comfortable and took what Buffalo gave them on offense (a hallmark of a McD's offense). All true but hardly insightful, if asked before the game almost anyone here would have said that's the blueprint for beating Buffalo. While the execution of that plan at such a high level on Sunday night was amazing to watch only a football neophyte would find anything in that article 'insightful'

Also Buffalo's just not that good.

They really aren't any good and remind me of an even worse version of the 2015-2020 Packers where their roster was extremely weak, yet media kept saying they were Super Bowl contenders. Allen is basically Rodgers putting the entire team on his back for the regular season before they get overwhelmed come playoff time.

No that's wrong. Buffalo's offense is THAT good. They have the best QB in the league and a very compatible offense that is well designed and very effective. There might offenses as good but none better. Their defense isn't dominant, but it is capable. Kind of reminds me of ours back in the 2010-15 years when we had great offenses and just complimentary type defenses that played smart timely defense with largely solid mediocre personnel and great game plans.

And since we're talking, I loved what the Athletic guys said on their podcast. Their comments about the attention to detail and spacing in the Pats offense just screamed Josh McDaniel, yet surprisingly they never mention him by name.

BTW- I watched the game again this morning and came away with a couple of thoughts. 1. This was NOT one of those wins that you felt was one you escaped with. When you watched this game, we were pretty much in control of it the entire game. The Pats were the ones who were letting the Bills back in the game with the 30yds in penalties and the penalty on the 3rd and 1 that cost them the ball and stalled what might have been a game ending drive. You forget they were ahead 20-10 early in the 4th.

2. I forgot how well and CONSISTENTLY we moved the ball all through this game. And like I said in my idle thoughts post, it is even MORE exciting when you realize just how much better it can become when they have more reps together and start to unwrap the enormity of this offense. I imagine there will be some step back on the road forward, but the potential is just so big now for the next several years.

3. I think that after a shaky start a 2nd look at the game left me believing that our LB room is starting to come around as well. For the last few games Spillane has been everything we hoped for. Leading the team in tackles and being on the field almost every play. Ellis has been better and Gibbens a solid rotational guy. And Tavai coming back will improve the run game defense. Again this defense is still feeling it self out and finding its footing. The longer it plays together the more weapons it can unleash.

4. The podcast guys mention that there are currently TEN QB's competing 70% + of their passes. Kind of blow my mind, when their used to be one or 2. Kind of shows the level of sophistication of passing attacks and the growing skills of QBs. I think we should take this in might we instantly lash out at pass defenders after a few passes get completed. It is HARD back there.

Not that I saw, Ken.

I was looking at the Marcus Jones interception. Someone mentioned that Allen had an easy completion to Cook coming out of the backfield but chose a more ambitious throw instead.

It's true. Cook comes free and Ellis is standing in a zone about ten yards behind Cook with his eyes right on him. Instead of closing in to cover Cook he stands there watching!

No wonder the Patriots have been shredded week in, week out by tight ends ...

That plus Hawkins.

I think in the 2025 NFL 'good' is a relative term. Buffalo is only a 'good' team in comparison to what passes for higher echelon teams at this moment. You make a valid point. Thinking about it, with KC having fallen off it's not as though there are any real juggernauts in the AFC right now. You've got Buffalo, Indy and Jax sitting at 4-1 but if we're being honest none of them exactly strikes fear into an opponent's heart.

Buffalo still does. We settled for a 52 yard FG and potential OT to avoid giving Allen a chance to answer the FG.

My thought there is it was just playing the odds more than anything else. Virtually windless in Buffalo Sunday night too. I'm not saying Buffalo isn't good but to the point @TommyD4207 was making (or I thought he was) they aren't 'that' good. Not denigrating them, they just aren't juggernaut good, maybe I'm putting too much weight on 'that good'
As always YMMV

There is no need for a DC replacement while Terrel Williams gets better. Vrabel has it under control. Funny how out of all Pats assistant coaches and Coordinators, its Vrabel - a former player - who makes his mark as an NFL HC. Rex Ryan is a blowhard (like moist), but the man can coach defense and he is a damn good motivator too. Rex could not praise Vrabel enough

Allen was still dangerous. 5.88 yac per 9 carries for 53 yards.

Maye and Diggs won the game. They kept ripping the Bills hearts out every time the Bills had Maye stopped.

This. They're just kind of regular good.

I don't expect them to get thrashed by 3 touchdowns in Atlanta like Philly did tonight, but I wouldn't be shocked if they lose either.

That -8.5 number was absolutely crazy, that's 07 Patriots/21 Chiefs ****. Atlanta has good skills players, a good offensive line, and a defensive line that is young and athletic, I don't think it will be a cakewalk for them. Maybe it will, who knows for sure, but like I said all week leading up to the game, it's not like I think the 25 Patriots are juggernauts, I don't think they're *that* good either. But the gap between them and Buffalo isn't that wide, if there is one at all. Stop Cook, and that's what you get out of Buffalo. Buffalo's defense played probably their best overall game of the season last Sunday. That's kind of what they are.

Because...wait for it...stop the run, Allen gets antsy *still* at age 30, and tries to heroball his way to a victory. Sometimes it works out. But he doesn't have Diggs to bail him out anymore. Josh Allen is basically Brett Favre who can run a little bit, to make the comparison to older Packers teams.

When you really boil it down, the Pats played more as a team, but without Mayes incredible performance its debatable if NE wins. NE loses this game with Brisset, Cam or Corky Mac at the helm. This NE win was very much QB driven.

Im not ready to declare the Bills mediocre. I still like them in the AFCC.

Buffalo sucks. We own the AFC East again.

Plus it's a division game, so it seems like anything goes (like 2023 Mac 25/30 272yds 2TD 0INT clutch 29-25 win).

That being said, this feels significantly different. Even after that 2023 win, I had zero faith that Mac was gonna improve for the Pats.

Even if they have to go through Foxboro in the playoffs?
With the way teams are imploding, it wouldn't shock me. In fact, the 2021 Pats were in driver's seat for the #1 seed in the AFC at 9-4 before slipping during the last quarter of the season.
