Inside the Jets-Patriots matchup - Jets Blog - ESPN New York

Very interesting stat on the bottom of that article shows that since 2009 when the Pats have called 60% or more pass plays they are 11-11....less than 60% they are 18-2

Why Belichick does not try this balanced technique as stats prove is the key to winning more is beyond me,We all know he is likely aware of the success of a more balanced attack but for some reason puts the game on the shoulders of Brady much more than he should.

I think for this reason BJGE and maybe Ridley are keys to a win...if Brady throws more than 30 times I think it may cost the team....unless of course our defense gives the Jets a 21 point lead before halftime, then the running game goes out the window

I don't have a problem with Brady throwing over 30 times. You look at most elite QB's, and if everyone thinks Brady is elite, then he should throw 30-40 times. You want your best player making plays. The Patriots at the end up of the day need to score a lot majority of the time to win. To do that you need Brady throwing the football.

I do agree they need more of a balance though.

The problem I have is they don't consistently try to establish the run throughout the game. A running back needs a consistent amount of touches to get into a rhythm. You can't just go to them early, ignore it majority of he game, then try to establish the running game later.

I usually see the Pats of late try to start the game off running, then if it doesn't work they pretty much abandon the run.

I love the way they game planned with the Jets game early in the year. They pretty much had an even balance plan attack of run and pass, and then late in the game they just pounded the rock and basically knocked the Jets out of the game.

I think the Pats are going try to open the game up, spread the field around, and try establish a heavy dose running plays later in the game. We'll see, and a lot of it depends on where they're at in the game. If they're playing from behind, it's safe to say they'll pretty much abandon the run.

Bill Belichick looks you in the eyes as he say's- "Stats are for LOSERS , while the the final score is for WINNERS".

Unfortunately final scores haven't been for Bill, lately.

He may want to pay attention to certain stats.

Not to be facetious, but this isn't a clear case of "not running" causes "not winning." It's just as common that falling behind leads to more passing.

That said, I agree that the Patriots giving up on the running game too easily is a common mistake.

I thought B. B. would use Woodhead more this season. He struggled early, though. Ben Jarvis can tote the rock... and should get 20 - 25 touches.

I think there may be confusion between cause and effect here. Whether it be the Patriots or any other NFL team, I believe it's more of a case of teams run the ball because they're winning, not teams win because they run the ball.

The team with the lead runs the ball to reduce the chance of turnovers, and to use more time off the clock. The team that is behind does the opposite. That skews the 'team that runs the ball more wins' statistic.

You get behind, you throw.
And when you get behind, you often lose.

"Not running" the ball means you are playing from behind and trying to preserve the clock. This is a pretty standard stat for teams that lose - a major imbalance in favor of passing.

The Patriots are best when they can jump out to a two score lead and run when the defense is favorable or when they are deliberately trying to run down the clock. I doubt they ever intend to abandon the running game unless the opposition is really stout against the run and sucks against the pass (like the Patriots.)

This week, the Jets are the perfect opponent against whom to feature the running game. Look for a heavy dose of BJGE like in the first go-round when the Pats racked up 135 yards on the ground..

Consistency requires a balanced offense and we need look no further than the long pass to Welker in the last Jets game, in which the defense bit on play action due to an effective running game. Since then, the running game has faultered and with it the passing game tumbled. The offense has not scored more than 20 points in three games. BJGE has been battling turf toe and ineffective. Woodhead is too limited physically to be a consistent inside runner and has taken a step back since last year, perhaps after getting rocked early in the season. Faulk injured his knee after one game back and hasn't been seen since. One would think that we still might be okay with BB having invested two high draft picks on RBs, but Vereen has been hurt and dressed for one game without seeing a carry, and Ridley, after one good game, has faded into oblivion for reasons that are unclear. They have to run effectively to beat the Jets but the running game has been headed in the wrong direction.
