Imagine if we didn't have SF's pick

Let's take another look at the trade last year in which we gave up our low 2007 first rounder for SF's 2008 1st + a 2007 4th. At the time, it was very controversial on this board.

Let's say we didn't make that move. This is how it would have been today:

- no Jerod Mayo

- no 3rd rounder for moving down 3 spots

- therefore, no trade with San Diego for the 2009 2nd rounder

- our first pick of the day at #62.

These next-year deals for 1sts and 2nds are SO huge. They change everything.

Great point. It goes to show that our FO might not be perfect, but they know how to 'bank' for the future. One benefit BB and Pioli have is that they have ultimate job security....so putting draft picks doesn't interfere with the need to get better NOW.

Then we'd probably have David Harris anyway.

Inaccurate assessment. If we hadn't made that trade and taken Harris at #28 we would have:

No Randy Moss. Because we wouldn't have had the high #4 to trade to Oakland.

No 18-1 season. You can't tell me we'd have gone 18-1 without Moss.

No Jerod Mayo. ILB. From the high 1st we got from San Fran.

No Shawn Crable. OLB. From the 3rd rounder we got from the Saints for trading down.

That's quite a few things there, and on the whole I'd rather have those 3 players and a record breaking season than Harris.

But can you say with 100% certainty that if the Pats didn't have SF's first, Goodell might well have decided a first was too much to pay.

I think he definitely would have. He wasn't interested in what was good or bearable for us at that point.

Whatever. It's all hypothetical. My point is that it's not like SF's pick came out of thin air; you need to consider what they would have done if they had kept it. A better scenario? Of course not. But I think the oversight in the first post was that the pick would have been used otherwise if it wasn't traded.
