If you could have One player from another team...

Dude, put down the sportscenter and walk away slowly...play a snap and then we'll talk.

Put down the koolaid yourself. You must be a surviving member of Jonestown if you would take any defensive player over a dominant QB like Manning. QB is by far the most important position on the field.

I gotcha dude. What you don't understand is the dynamics of football. Yes, a quarterback is a very important position in situational football, which the nfl is all about. However, there is a distinct difference between Manning and Brady. What you probably don't yet understand (please don't percieve this as a slight, I'm just being honest) is that statistics and gaudy gains are essentially meaningless for player evaluations in football. Manning distributes the ball between three true recievers, mostly working in a gun-first set and sets up a run off of the pass. When the run becomes established, they rely on a bootleg play action off of a zone blocking scheme and run 15 yard drags or posts off of this after sucking up the safeties. Which explains why their passing game is so effective in the third and short type situations and why Dallas Clark is so frequently seen getting behind safeties.

What I am trying to articulate to you is that a dominant defensive player is a far greater asset in situational football. A player who has not only great skill, but has an esoteric collection of said skills can be a far more effective weapon. Think about how a defensive player can have multi-facited impact upon the game. A player like Ed Reed can remove a wideout from a pattern, effectively disguise bracket coverage (potentially leading to a turnover), rush the passer, aggressively play the run, cover a modern-era tight end (simplified for you, big, fast, strong guys who are sexy draft picks because Mel Kiper gets harder than titanium over 40 times), and have the ability to blend coverages. The reason why these attributes are so important is that it removes many of the reads that make good QB's good. They effectively play within their scheme and make their teamates better in many situations. In my opinion, that is why an impact safety is so valuable.

Devin Hester

DING DING DING We have a winner.

Can you imagine this team with this guy on special teams throwing in a touchdown every couple games and giving our already potent offense a short field all the time?

I love the fact that you Pat fans realize what a great player Reed is.He isnt just a safety,he is a playmaker in every sense of the word. When he gets the ball in his hand whether it be a missed FG,punt return,or interception he is alomost impossible to bring down, and there is good shot he is taking it to the house.I dont know how to describe it,but the way he runs with the football is like noone else I have ever seen.He slinks and weaves and slides his way up the field,it is just a thing of beauty to watch.I also like that most of you have picked defensive players, because we all know thats what wins championships in the NFL.

If I had to list my 5 as a Ravens fan it would be:

1.LT
2.Tom Brady
3.Peyton Manning
4.Champ Bailey(opposite of CMac OMG!)
5.Merriman

A dominant QB or RB is always going to be more valuable than any single defensive player. A dominant corner can only cover one guy. A dominant lineman or LB can be double-teamed. A dominant QB or running back breaks games open. You can't just send a single receiver out in a pattern to take them out of a play or double team them to neutralize them like you can with a defensive player.

Are you a Patriots fan? You'd drop Brady for Manning before dropping Wilson for Reed. That is beyond illogical. You can make a case for LT, but Manning? Not a chance.

I don't understand the dynamics of football because I would take Manning over any defensive player? Hahahahahahaha!!! :singing:

How much effort does it take to gameplan for Manning vs Ed Reed? It's not even close.

No, I would take Manning and trade him for two or three defensive studs. And yeah I would take LT as well. Brady, LT and Moss would be an unstoppable trifecta.

Why do I feel like Annie Sullivan?

You know what I would also love? A really great punter, someone like Ray Guy who could pin teams back on their 5 and then let our defense wreak havoc running INT's in for touchdowns.

Only problem is your guess is as good as mine as to who is the best punter in the NFL. I've seen Moorman boom some big ones but its more than just having a strong leg, its accuracy too.

A great punter is a weapon but addressing the second point, how many interceptions do you see thrown when teams are pinned inside their 5? Virtually none because offenses are much more conservative in that area of the field.

Put Ed Reed or Champ Bailey on this Patriot team and it would probably be the best of all time.

I agree. I'm a little stunned by how many people are mentioning RBs when we HAVE a really good RB. If we're looking to improve the team, doesn't it make sense to target positions where we lack playmaking talent or depth?

And if Maroney goes down, Morris is a great feature back?

My point exactly!

OK, who let John "What's Defense?" Clayton join the forum?! Learn yourself some football, brah! That was ig-nant! You are a pat's fan, man, you should know better than anyone that offense can be gameplanned against and that a dominant defender is far more valuable than an extraordinary offensive player.

I hope you were joking in your claim that Tom Brady isn't close to being the most valuable player on this team.

Now, an RB isn't as important as a QB. But even so he is The Man on up to half the offensive plays. That gives him a greater effect on the outcome of the game than any one defensive player.

Put me in the Ed Reed column as well. Although Adrian Wilson is really coming on these days.

I was thinking about Walter Jones as well, but man, given our O-line play so far, what's the use?

Tough choice for me between Ed Reed, Sanders and Bailey. I'd have to pick Champ Bailey though. The man practically takes away half the field.

Jason Taylor would be an absolute beast from the Elephant spot though.

We already have AD for the Elephant spot.
It's really hard to upgrade on your defensive ends when you have Seymour AND Warren.

I would say Brian Urlacher because he can be a true MLB for us and I think he can stay with some tight ends as well. He is one of those rare LBs that can take over a game. I've seen him do it.

Patrick Willis. The kid's already been sensational, he's going to be a star in this league for a decade. We may not need him this year, but eventually...

I'd just like to echo the Polamalu and Reed comments. Wouldn't mind Kerry Rhodes or Adrian Wilson either.

1. I think the player you pick, you pick to play on this team and for this reason i passover manning.

2. You take into consideration age obviously and difficultcy of position.

3. If you cannot stop the oppposition, there is no point in showing up, thus you look to add to the defence.

3. A great punter is not easy to find, but honestly there are a few AFL players that i think would do a very good job, all have good directional kicking and a number of them have booming legs. Anthony Rocca the younger brother of Sav Rocca of the Eagles and Tim Notting to name a couple.

Ed Reed and Champ Bailey are both great players and both 29, so they have a number of years left.

Shawne Merriman, Tommy Harris, DeAngelo Hall, Bob Sanders, Troy Polamalu, Sean Taylor, Terrell Suggs & Mario Williams are a few players you have to consider.
Then a couple young o-linemen to consider Nick Mangold and Shawn Andrews.

I'd probably go with Shawne Merriman
