This was a game of many highs, but also a few lows. So let's get right to them and put this baby to bed, since Houston is going to come up fast.

1. Let's talk about the good things first.

a. Josh McDaniels REALLY needs to be a HC somewhere, and I can't believe that some owner watching how McDaniel created a game plan that cut up a VERY good defense for most of the first half.....and then takes a rookie, completely changes the game plan completely in an instant and STILL got at least 2 first downs on every JB possession for the rest of the game. Now granted the O only scored 10 points after JG goes down, but at least 2 of those times the refs killed potential scoring drives with weak ass holding penalties.

b. The only chance the Pats have to keep McDaniels is if the Denver experience soured him on being a HC, or more importantly soured his wife. Or the combination of the long term security of being in a great environment, in a area your young family loves, with an owner who you like and likes you, and the prospect of becoming a HC in NE in a few years. But the inevitable fact is that at the end of the season he IS going to get an offer to be a HC, period.

c.Bottom line you cannot underestimate the affect that excellent coaching can make on a team. That's why all those receivers were open, and how they could move the ball with a Rookie #3 QB in a different offense.

d. The next coach that needs to be put on a pedestal has to be Dante Scarnechia. Facing ANOTHER very good DL, the OL actually improved their play over week one. And they did playing 2 different games. What I mean by that, if I had to critique the OL while Jimmy was playing I would have said the pass protection was Excellent, but the run blocking rarely created any holes. However in the 2nd half, with JB in the game, the OL virtually flipped the switch. Their run blocking became very effective, but their pass protection declined a bit. But all in all, with the prospect of seeing a Solder, Tuney, Andrews, Karras/Mason, Cannon line up, is looking better and better every week, and some of those off season OL questions are being answered.

e. That being said we CANNOT afford to run to the left all the time, like we did today. BTW- can we get a "hell yes" for Marcus Cannon today, who seems to keep on getting better.

f. LGB is a BEAST! He WAS the MVP in my opinion, just because of the situation we were put in. Miami has a very good run defense, and they KNEW we were going to run, and they KNEW it was likely going to be to the left, and they STILL couldn't stop us most of the time. How long has it been since we saw that.

g. Also kudos should got to Bennett, Harbor, Devlin and the WR's who also were critical to the success of the run game.

h. And speaking of Bennet, between his blocking, pass catching, and running after the catch, maybe HE should be the MVP. And for the doubters, THIS is why the Pats brought him to NE. Can you imagine the problems DC's will have when Gronk gets back.

BTW- the best post game comment I heard, came from Zolack, when he gave Bennett the best compliment, when he said, "Once the game started, we didn't mention Gronk's name the entire broadcast"

And Bennett once again endeared himself to me when he talked after the game and said, "this is the most fun I've had playing football in a long time". He also talked about his blocking before talking about his pass catching and his TD......and he writes children's books too.

i. Horrible to see JG go down, especially after such a great start. Even after just 6 quarters the price of trading for him has gone to multiple first rounders (IMHO) IF the Pats decide to use him in that way. JB did nothing in this game to make the Pats feel they HAVE to keep him.

Fortunately the X Rays were negative, so while I doubt very much JG will play Thursday, there may be a chance he can play vs Buffalo. I'd say about a 35% chance. On the bad side, his absence hurts the Pats, but it is NOT going to hurt his future chances, in fact in may enhance them against a potential bad performance.

2. Now let's get to the Defense where the results IMHO weren't so positive.

a. And it all starts with the coaching, which started off great. While building that 24-3 lead, the Pats D managed to put some pressure and hits on Tannyhill, while at the same time provide really tight coverage on the receivers, so even when there was a rare catch, there was someone right on them fighting for the ball. So I have to ask myself WTF happened to cause such a change in the 2nd half, Matty?

Clearly we came out with a different game plan in the 2nd half. We loosened the S's and played zones underneath and lo and behold, Tannyhill was finding wide open receivers and he suddenly had all the time in the world to complete them. (and also he and his receivers played real well too).

MATTY, this isn't 2011-14 when you had to protect your defense so the offense could win games. It's 2016 and you have a REALLY good defense. You don't NEED to change the way you are playing to keep long plays from happening, because usually when you do the opposite occurs. The Dolphins have on TD that was 80 yds on 5 plays. It wasn't the 7 points that killed us, but the 5 plays. If it had taken the 12-15 plays that you'd expect with that kind of D, the game would have been over even with Gotskowski's miss.

b. The run D keeps getting better and that will be a big plus as the season wears on. Miami's rush attack only netted 35 yards on 10 carries, which is particularly good, because often there is a lot of garbage time yds that a rushing attack gets when a team is in full pass mode. Tannyhill, got 35 yds on 6 carries, but half of them came on that great run on the last drive.

c. Early in the game the Pats didn't get to Tannyhill, but they DID pressure and hit him. Later, like in the last game, the pressure seemed to abate for some reason. I'm hoping someone who has the game on tape and can revue it can tell me why this happened. We have too many rushers to think we just ran out of gas.

d. What a revelation Chris Long has been, and we'll stop at that, because you all know what I mean.

e. It was clear to me that the Dolphins wanted Collins to follow the RB who released up the middle and went to the flat. Instead Jamie stayed in the middle and was right there when Tannyhill tried to get the ball to Landry running a crosser.

BTW- and who wouldn't want that Landry kid on their team. The kid is a real baller.

f. I mentioned in the game thread that Coleman's technique on that out and up on Sim's TD, was really poor technique. He fully sold out on the out move, and you can't do that when you have no S help. Hopefully a lesson learned. The rest of yards the secondary gave up, I blame on zone defense and a soft mentality the big lead created. When they DIDN'T play that way, Miami was struggling. When they did, they allowed Tannyhill to put up close to 400 yds. Worse they allow the Dolphins to be licking their chops for our trip to Miami. We had the opportunity not only to beat them, but to crush them mentally. Whether it's true or not, the real negative we have after this game is that Miami THINKS they could have won the game and can handle our defense.

g. Coaches don't practice for 24-3 scenarios early in games, but I wish they had and perhaps we wouldn't have had the defensive results we got. I don't think the same mistake will be made again.

h. Another plus that should be mentioned was we finally cracked our TO cherry. It ended up being a 4-1 win, and where would we have been without it.

3. Special teams - Well as good as they were the first game, that's how bad they were today. Ryan Allen was decent, but even he will admit he didn't have one of his better days, and of course the Gotskowski miss was monumental, since the game should have been over, after a great final drive by the offense. These days, you CANNOT miss kicks that are less than 40 yds. Maybe one a year, and Steven, this better be IT.

Coverage teams weren't a factor since it was clearly the game plan to let them start on the 25.

BTW- I just lost my entire General Comments section is some F$cking computer glitch. I'll try to reconstruct it later, but I'm too pissed off to do it now

Great summary of the positives and negatives from the game. Just one comment. Is it really fair to compare rookie JB being thrown into the game to Jimmy G (who has been preparing as the starter all offseason and is going into his third year in the offense). I mean I don't get how you can say that JB didn't look like a keeper. From what I saw from a true rookie being thrown into a tough situation, he looked great.

Complimenting your thoughts on the Defense:

I am disappointed with Sheard's performance so far. I thought that some here were over-rating him, but so far, he has been decent at best.

Mingo has showed at least great effort in all his games. He seems to have a excelent motor and never gave up on a play

Ryan got a owned sometimes, but played well in the first half. The same happened last year: Slow start, strong mid-late season, decent finish. For a number 2 CB, he is good.

Cyrus Jones might have a crack as a starter this year, later in the year. Hopefully we get a "Collins Element" with his

Well I read that as JB didn't do anything to make the Pats feel like they need to keep JG as in his previous sentence he discussed getting multiple first round picks for JG.

But now I also see how you interpreted it.

Miami THINKS they could have won the game and can handle our defense.

Not sure they will feel that way if both Brady and Gronk are playing.

Regarding the defense I wonder if that collision between Collins and Chung dinged them up a bit.

Good review Ken. Enjoyed it.

I just never see any pass rush from our D line. It's been this way for years. When I watch other games, I see D lines getting great pressure on QBs.

Yes, yes so true about the defense in the second half. God, how I hate stupid prevent defense. Why not more prevent offense--we were running most plays in the second half with plenty of time to spare on the clock, and too many key penalties, and too many plays for losses, given the whole point is to move forward when you have a 28 point lead in the second half.

The second half seemed geared to keeping the TV audience from switching the dial. A lot of frustrating viewing from Pat fans when we should have been relaxing and enjoying a drink. And prevent defense is damn unfair to the defense (it's too passive and not fun)--and by extension, the offense.

I see how you interpreted it and it makes much more sense.

Let' s see what JB can do with a game plan suited to his skills (though short week means the offense will be taking in plenty of .... caffeine) . Hopefully he learns a few more plays and can be effective.

Fully agree on the oline and blunt, run left and get 10 yards happened a few times (which means it wasn't an accident).

Can't wait to see what happens with Gronk and Bennett. Hard not to love his attitude and what he brings to the c=game. Love that comment from Zolak, very fitting and a great game to have such an effect.

Great summary agree with huge days by Long, Blount and Bennett. JB played pretty well for a 3rd string rookie it was the defense that let us down in a huge way when we needed them most.

Jimmy G hopeful for week 4 according to nfl network so lets hope that is true. DL got no push entire second half and Miami WR looked much faster than our CBs some really ugly defense in the 2nd half. Gost really let us down but at least it didnt cost us the game.

thought playcalling was very good. McD must have saw something cause we hadnt run a toss sweep all year but it worked well and that hurdle by Blount was a thing of beauty.

4. General comments: I originally had 8 or nine of these before somehow I wasn't allowed to copy and paste. I doubt I'll be able to or have the patience to recreate all of them, but that might be a good thing. ;)

a. I don't have much confidence in the Pats for this next game. In the best of times this additional aberration that the NFL has perpetrated on the public in ANOTHER of their money grabbing schemes, takes away the biggest advantage the Pats consistently have, and that is game preparation.

No team in the league gives their team better game plans on a consistent basis than the Pats. You can count on both hands the number of times when they have been out coached in the last 16 years. However the short 4 day week, even in the best of times, eliminates that advantage. The is a game where the best athletes are more important, and a coach cannot overcome that with a great plan.

The Texan's under the best of conditions would be a tough out, even at home. They have multiple great pass rushers, plus the best defensive player in the league who is slowly rounding into shape for our game. They also have a good HC, who unfortunately, is intimately familiar with our system.

NOW add the adversity of the short week, the rookie QB, and likely no Gronk, Hightower and whoever else got hurt today, and winning this game would be a greater upset than the Cardinal win.

Jacoby is going to get one practice and a walk through to completely assimilate a game plan that even a guy like with Brady's experience needs 3 full practices to feel comfortable.

I assume that a great deal of the Houston game plan was already in place prior to this week, but STILL, while Josh might have a good idea, Jacoby won't have a clue until tomorrow at the earliest.

Given this scenario, if Gronk isn't 11o% healthy, I wouldn't let him sniff the field on Thursday, because I'm thinking that it is only about a 35% chance that JG will be back for Buffalo, and I want a Rob Gronkowski who is chomping at the bit for THAT one.

b. JG's price just went up. The good news is that it's not broken, time will heal what ails him. In fact this injury INSURES his price because it will protect him against a possible bad game. Right now, every frame of film on him, is a great one (except for the fumble). His poise and leadership will be unquestioned. How could you NOT give up multiple firsts for a QB that you don't have to train, and STILL have very cheap for the first year. Of course this assumes the Pats still want to move him, but JB did nothing in HIS 2+ quarter to make you think that with 3 years of hard work, he won't be a good NFL QB too.

c. For almost 3 quarters I thought the refs had done a really good job in this game. In fact I made a note to find out who these guys were. They kept the game under control and there were a bare minimum of calls being made, including one I didn't really like that went in the Pats favor. Then over the last quarter plus of the game those same refs made 3 very weak assed calls against the Pats while at the same time ignoring similar calls against the Dolphins or worse.

The worst of these calls was the PI against Ryan that helped lead to a TD. On this play, Ryan clearly got to the spot first and the WR simply fell down trying to run through him, while never even looking back to the ball. As far as I know the PI rules there is NOTHING in this play that came close to being a PI. I looked closely in the replay to see if Logan pulled him down or tried to grab him, and there was nothing.

But even though it was a horrible call that led to a TD, I was prepared to forgive this crew for one horrid miscue. THEN came the 2 weakassed holding calls that killed 2 JB drives that had started well. It wasn't so much that they made these calls, even if I disagreed. What REALLY pissed me off was that I was seeing the same thing AND worse being committed by the Phins OL with nothing being called.

The only thing I ever want to see from the refs is equity. If you are going to throw it on the Pats, you'd better call it on the opponents and for 2 straight weeks this hasn't been the case. The Pats ended up with close to 70 yds in penalties, while if you take away the PF they HAD to call, the Phins had 4 for 35 away from home

d. And if you really want to fire up your NFL hatred, I just read where Aquib Talib will NOT be getting any NFL punishment DESPITE carrying a weapon illegally and having it go off in a public place. Didn't Plaxico go to JAIL for doing the same thing. I just don't get it. Do I have my fact straight? Do the Jets and Broncos just get free passes on these things

e. I can't tell you how happy I was to hear the NFL's rating were down across the board in the first week plus Thursday night game. I can't express my hate for that totally corrupt, lying, and disgraceful group. It makes my vow to never watch anything that this league puts out beyond Patriot games even more important. If it was gone tomorrow and I had to go to HS games to get my football fix, I'd be fine with it. Because of who they have running it, the NFL doesn't deserve to exist. I know I'm not alone in this.

f. Now the Pats are going to HAVE to sign a QB for the next 2 games. That being said, if I am wrong about Jimmy and there is a good chance for him to be there for Buffalo, I wouldn't be shocked if they didn't sign anyone, and went with Julian as an emergency guy for Houston only. He knows the system, and you can't get ANYONE in here for one practice who would be better, unless the Titans want to let us borrow Matt Castle until for a week.

That being said, if there is ANY question about JG being ready for Buffalo, you HAVE to get someone. Even if its just to run the scout team.

f. I turned on channel 4 to watch 60 minutes and I happened to catch one play of the Denver Indy game. I figures that one play would be a critical PI penalty on Indy that was almost as bad as the one we had on Logan. I couldn't turn it off fast enought

I just never see any pass rush from our D line. It's been this way for years. When I watch other games, I see D lines getting great pressure on QBs.

From last year.

here are my idle thoughts

1.)Jimmy garrapolo is the 2nd best qb in the afc east.

2.)We made it two games before someone accused the patriots of cheating(again with the radios) turns out the dolphins didn't know how batteries work(Nice job trent, pos)

3.)I thought you couldn't land with your entire body weight on the qb anymore? How did kiko get away with that?

4.) Blunt ****ing showed up today, He carried the offense int eh second half with bennete providing an assist.

5.) Arian Foster should be doing some groin strenches while hes refusing to stand for the anthem.

6.) Brisset has some work to do.

7.) Sign vinny testeverde as the vet backup! or flutie SIGN THE FLUTIE./

8.) How early are you able to count garbage time stats? is quarter 2 too early?

You are right it is a completely apples and oranges comparison. I'm not sure how you got that impression from what I wrote. I'm sorry if I wasn't clearer.

JB did NOTHING that wouldn't make me think that if he gets a few more years to develop that he TOO will be a good NFL QB, even if he never plays another game after Thursday during that time.

I just read it too quickly. After the other poster pointed out the other take it makes much more sense.

Thought we would have been more fearsome on pass rush. Long has been fierce, but Sheard, Flowers, McClein, and Mingo have not made the plays. Still think the quality is there and hope it flashes more.

I know he was subbing in and the game plan had to be altered fast, but Brisset was a big drop in QB play. No interceptions and he looked strong and able to move around while looking for targets. So those were positives, but he was the third guy getting reps this summer. I imagine we will see a very raw, but heady and strong qb against Houston.

Speaking of Houston, after 2 games do they look like they could project as the toughest team in the AFC?

Bennett for a second game was the reason the offence scored more points.

Blount ran REALLY well. We haven't had somebody do that since Cory Dillon.

Glad Ghost missed this week, we didn't need the points.

here are my idle thoughts
3.)I thought you couldn't land with your entire body weight on the qb anymore? How did kiko get away with that?
?

I KNEW there was something I forgot from my first General topics list. Christian Fauria made what I thought was a interesting observation when they showed him the replay of the JG injury play. He said that would never happen to Brady because he knows how to position himself on how to fall. That seemed like an odd comment UNTIL I remembered hearing about how in the off season, Brady practices how to fall and protect himself. With more experience, he probably WOULD have been able to avoid the injury.

That being said, you are probably right on your point about Alonzo throwing his full weight on the QB, but somehow I can't upset about another friggin rule that makes it almost impossible to play defense.

You had me until the Talib and tv ratings comment.....at that point you ruined a great analysis with the same garbage ruining most convos

Anyway, pats are playing with house money ..... 2-2 was a popular choice with the idea that Brady was the only one out.....and here we are at 2-0

And we own the Texans and the Bills? Pffft

4-0 is where we will be whilst completing the pats version of preseason

I had 2011 flashbacks in the second half. Defense couldn't do a thing with Tannehill who just marched down the field at will with only turnovers stopping the fish. For now I'm just chalking that up as last year's week 2 in Buffalo. Remember that one? When the Patriots went up 37-13 at the end of the third quarter and then the defense let up and never managed to get their rythm back. Bills closed within 37-32 before a Gostkowski FG made it 40-32 and the Bills final drive with a minute left got stopped by an INT.

I can't remember if I've ever posted on these but I wanted to tonight, to say thank you. I look forward to write-ups like these week in and week out and this site never disappoints. The difference in analysis, information, education, and even entertainment between this site and the programs/personalities that actually get paid the big bucks is laughable. (Which is why i want to donate to Ian/the site when i can) So ya, just wanted to say thanks to you and the rest of the gang here for the effort : )

As farvas your notes on the officiating, i feel like this same inconsistency can be found across the league in multiple games and there is a definate pattern to it. Sure they can try to mask it but I firmly believe this is intentional to keep games a little closer whenever they think they can. We've seen how low this league will go and this type of behavior towards their goal of league wide parity is in their financial interest for sure. (Though maybe not in the long run if they push too far with this stuff)

Anyway thanks again for the analysis!
