Ideal weight for 4-3 DE

What's a typical weight for a 4-3 DE? I was surprised to read that Mathis only weighs 235.

At just 235 pounds, Mathis will be one of the lightest defensive ends in the league, and there are some concerns the increased workload may affect his level of play. But coach Tony Dungy said at the team's recent minicamp that coaches will closely monitor his snaps over the course of the season.

How about Dwight Freeney? I always thought of him as small, but he must be a lot heavier than this.

Have to admit I'm not familiar with Colts DTs. Anyone tell me their weights?

Raheem Brock was just moved to DT. He's 274.

Montae Reagor is 285.

Now-Bills DT Tripplett is 295.

Former Colt Josh Williams is 285.

Dwight Freeney is 268.

he was an OLB/DE before..hes probably more than 235 .. maybe 245ish but he only played sparingly as a pass rush specialist..he wasnt an everydown guy

I thought he was starting LDE for the Colts. So he's just a pass rush guy? Still seems small to me.

Do you know he weighs more? You could be right for all I know, but ESPN made a point of talking about him only being 235, and that's what the IND roster has him at:

The thing that amazed me was that he isn't the smallest DE evidently, according to ESPN:

yeah well hes starting this year i believe since Brock is moving to DT and Triplet is gone. Um..about the 235..could be..may not. like someone said..Bruschi didnt play at whatever weight hes listed..he plays more than that so ESPN and team reports arent too accurate because they usually leave it over long period of time

I imagine the ideal weight is as heavy as you can get without losing significant speed.

They are all shrimp DTs well under 300#, except for Corey Simon who is listed at 6' 0' 300#. But if he weighed an ounce under 360# last season the Eagles might not have released the fatty. Their DEs are safety and LB size. The best of them, Larry Triplet, left in FA, If Freeney weighs as much as Vrabel (LB) or Mathis weighs as much as Rodney,(SS), I'll eat my Pat's hat. Triplet was another guy like James and Thornton they could no longer afford.

So far this offseason they have lost 4 starters including Edge James and imported but one player, kicker AV. They have dropped another starter and given the job to a 5th round draft pick OL, without even seeing him in minicamp! Their two guards were scrub FAs given the job last season cuz that off season they dumped all their OL depth and everyone knows... Guards you can get anywhere. Official Loss excuse: We had "protection problems"

The Clots wer fortunate last year to not suffer any major injuries 'cuz they had no depth and luckily didn't need it. Now they have even less. My bet is they can't replace those five starters adequately, and injuries will strike this season, so there will be others also who can't be replaced. Why?

The Colts have been building their D light and fast.

This is precisely why BB is drafting his OL and TEs to be big and strong and fast. The Colts will have a hard time matching up against this offensive unit

Brady - Dillon - Graham - Watson - Thomas - Jackson
Light - Mankins - Koppen - Neal - Kaczur

Looks like a power running formation, which should minimize the spinning... but it's actually convertable to a "power passing" formation, giving our big, fast receivers a chance to steamroll the undersized D.

It's all part of the plan.
