So there's been some speculation of Junior return in the next few days, which brings up the logical question of "Is there room for him?".

Add to the mix that after the first preseason games more reports are surfacing about Hobson and how he is struggling to pick up the defense.

I'm just now connecting the dots that IMO there is a very good chance that Seau ends up bumping Hobson from the roster. In fact, I'll predicting it.

With so many of the younger players (Crable, Mayo, Redd, Guyton) flashing in camp and Hobson not doing anything, I don't think you bump one of the young guys if/when Seau comes back.

And after reading what Seau said, I'm 90% sure he will be back in a Pats uniform; and that it will be at the expense of Hobson.

Thoughts?

two thoughts from me.

One don't you think Hobson deserves the benifit of the whole camp/preseason (very least the first cut down).

Two though the Seau talk has heated up he has been saying he is still recovering from Shoulder surgery and until he is healthy he wont bump anyone. Though the First Seau interview I heard a few weeks ago he did drop something about 2 weeks but I couldn't tell whether he meant in 2 weeks he should be healthy or in 2 weeks he expects to make a decision/movement on Pats side.

Seau is remarkable for his age. I'm a couple years older than him and I know I can't punish my body like that. He's great against the run and shooting gaps. He is likely a great locker room guy. He is a liability in coverage. With he and Bruschi both on the field, we are at a disadvantage.

I love Seau, but I really hope we are able to upgrade him right off the roster.

I think there's room for both, though I'm disappointed to hear Hobson is struggling with the D.

The thing is they don't play the same role or ILB position in our system. We really need Hobson to rotate in with Bruschi at SILB to keep him fresh.

I don't think it would come down to Seau OR Hobson..if anything it would bump another player..It might be that he would not be ready...so if that is the case..why PUP him?? If he's not ready..he can sign return when he's ready..so the 6 week rill the windown would not be in effect..

We're all just reading tea leaves, but fwiw here's my interpretation of Junior's status:

He wants to come back, but is still recovering. BB wants him to come back, but also wants to hold onto his rookies as long as possible. Therefore, Seau doesn't return to the roster until after final cutdowns -- either filling an IR-vacated slot or bumping a rookie late enough that the kid has a better chance of making it through to the PS.

Good call.

I know people seem to love Guyton, but I see him as a practice squad player. He has some potential, but I haven't seen anything that has shown me he deserves a roster spot. Many times players who look like studs vs. third stringers get cut from this team.

I don't know if Hobson's roster spot is in jeparody or not, but I don't think he will be bumped to keep a guy like Guyton or Redd. I do think he deserves the entire preseason to prove himself. He was acquired because the Pats did see something in him and just because he is slow to learn the playbook doesn't mean he won't be a valuable contributor when he does. He deserves a shot to prove it one way or another.

Hell yeah. I would love to see Junior lining up next to Mayo.
Nothing against Hobson or Bruschi for that matter.
I just think these guys would be a great combination.

Well that's kind of the point of my post. Everyone assumes Hobson is a lock, but if Seau comes back, who do you bump at LB? Right now, everyone else is looking good, even the rookies. Thus, my prediction that Hobson gets the boot.

Looking at recent history, vets who had trouble adjusting to BB's scheme (Beisel, Brown) never seem to ever pick it up. Whereas a vet like Seau got it right away. A rookie Mayo gets it right away.

I think it's just one of those things where you got it, or you don't. And unfortunately, I don't think Hobson has it. Maybe there is a reason Mangina didn't have him playing ILB ...

From what I hear, Seau isn't really ready to come back from his surgery and is a few weeks away. Besides, he doesn't need to go through camp or preseason to be ready. I do agree that if he is added, he will be back the last week of August.

I wonder why a team that had as many defensive needs heading into the offseason as the Jets did let Hobson go. He lasted a long time on the market too. Maybe Hobson is a JAG who was picked up to increase the competition.

Belichick said once that you don't go into the draft with unfilled slots on the roster. There should be at least a starter ready to go at every position. If a player you draft is better than that starter, then the rookie replaces him in the rotation. It looks to me like Hobson was brough in to fill in a slot, should the team strike out on drafting a competent LB. Not that we have 2 or more, maybe Hobson gets pushed out.

Regarding the Pat's LBers, it may be more difficult to teach old dogs new tricks than it is for puppies. It's so early in the season that a conservative viewpoint would dictate that the rookie LBers aren't as good as they appear and that Hobson isn't as bad, but that each lies closer to a middle ground. Hobson also needs time to adjust like AD did. He's only signed for one year so cutting him won't break the bank. I do expect him to improve though.

It's funny how fast we've changed from "don't you know by now that BB simply doesn't draft linebackers, it takes way too long for a rookie to learn his system!"

Can you point some examples against westbrook a great fast back seau was on coverage duty. His coverage of him was good enough from what i saw.He was veteran and the usual jukeing westbrook was unable to shake him.

That is funny. Guys like Biesel/Brown who may or may not have possessed the athleticism, often seemed to be at the wrong place and AD who was probably the best ILB last year, is better outside. Now a rookie named after a condiment comes along and wows us after 1 game. Go figure...

The most telling thing I've heard from Seau thus far is he said something like, "If I come back, it's got to be for the Patriots."

Given that he knows the system and should be able to jump in fairly quickly, that means we can take all the time we want, let camp and preseason run it's course, then when he's ready to come back see who should go.

God forbid, we may even have an injury or two amongst the linebackers ::knock on wood::, which would make the decision for us.

I could see Seau bumping him, and I could definitely see A. Seward bumping him. I like Seward better than Hobson, but it would take a 5th round pick, plus Carolina not matching our offer. We'll see.

Of course, they didn't sign Seward in the RFA Signing period, so I guess he'd have to be cut, and wouldn't cost us a 5th. All these Seward posts are confusing me. Let's all just hope that Hobson suddenly "clicks", and we can all say "what were we worried about".

Seau, if healthy fits this roster. He's a lot more effective than Bruschi would be. Chalk me up as one who thinks we'll be hearing his name after preseason or late into it.
