I guess we can officially stop talking about Peppers

100% of the guys claim that "it's not about the money" until it comes time to sign the papers and take less money.

They then go to the highest bidder and still claim "It wasn't about the money, it was about respect"

which means, "Somebody showed finally showed me the proper amount of respect, by giving me lots more money!"

For many folks here, unless a player is willing play for at the patriots for least 30% less than other teams, then the player is a money grubbing SOB. Of course, the patriots are prudent, not money-grubbing, to want players to play for less.

The problem is, monster deals don't cripple teams like they did when the Pats were winning championships. In a span of 10 years, we went from having a salary cap of $64M to a salary cap of $128M to no salary cap at all. The advantage the Pats had by getting players to take less is gone.

I understand that. But with a salary cap increase obviously all players demand more. I can't see how paying a guy who has 3 years left in his prime to a 5 year 17 mil. a year deal doesn't hurt what can/cannot do in FA, draft, etc.

I see what you're saying how salaries have gone stupid high, but over 14 mil. a year? That's considered insane even today. That's approaching QB pay right there. How in the hell can you keep Brady, Peppers and field a complete team at the same time with two contracts like that?

I understand the cap has continued to go up every year pretty much, but I don't think it's high enough that huge contracts like that wont hurt teams.

He has said many times he wants out of Carolina, obviously this shows us 2 things he's either

A) mentally ******ed if he thinks he'd get more than that elsewhere

B) clearly not about the money. Now I know most people will say B but that's a very risky decision to turn down 14 mil a year when no one truly knows what teams will offer him. If it's over that, I agree **** it. To me this just sounds like he's not all about the money and he does indeed want to leave Charlotte.

The beast wants to be on a "primetime team", and for sure that's not going to be Carolina for many a moons now. The beast has made enough bling bling from his rookie contract and franchise tags that another mill or two here or there per year isn't going to cause him grief. The beast wants the SB bling now, just like Moss.

Pay the beast $10-12mill and bring him here, and turn him loose. Then, watch the dominoe affect and likes of TBC, Wilfork, Warren, Green, Mayo et al, along with Rd#1 DE turn into a fearsome front.

We've got 3-5 yrs of Brady in his primetime left. Need to make the push now and win, then BB can walk away into the sunset with second hand of SB rings

If it hurts you so much, go root for organizations that pay all their guys like the Skins. That's the gold standard for the NFL in your eyes huh?

The Pats pay their guys, not every new FA like the Redskins/sports media feels the need to.

We can officially stop talking about Peppers once he signs with another team. Until then, threads like these are premature.

It looks like it's seriously down to the Patriots, Eagles, and Bears, all possible playoff contenders. If he wants to get to a winner, like some speculate, then those are the options of the teams that have expressed some kind of interest.

I'd provide a link from rotoworld but I'm on my iPhone, but there's a report that Washington is ready to spend money in free agency like their playng with monopoly money. Also says they are ready to fly peppers down in a private jet. If they are serious about peppers it puts a dent in the pats plans if they were actually legit about signing pep. Only way he ends up in NE is if he seriously wants to win now, which I suspect he really does, and is not all about money, which I also suspect since he didn't take that lucrative deal from Carolina.

I think this is the article you mean. Doesn't mean it's going to happen, just the writer speculating.

Where Julius Peppers, Darren Sproles, NFL free agents will sign - Don Banks - SI.com

Let's go in-depth (because your right by saying down to three teams)

Weather: All cold, bad climates, no preference. ----

Coach: If you're a defensive player, BB is the obvious choice over Andy Reid and Lovie Smith. Patriots check

Scheme: Bears and Eagles run 4-3, Peppers said himself he wants to play as OLB in a 3-4. Patriots Check

Best Team: It's close between the pats and eagles. Our history and tom brady give the slight edge. Patriots check

Better supporting cast: Peppers will find a better cast on defense on the Eagles. Eagles check

It's going to come down to money between the Pats and the Eagles.

." According to SI's Don Banks, Skins coach Mike Shanahan "covets" Sproles, and owner Dan Snyder will fire up his "private jet and Brink's truck" to reel in Peppers.

Remember, Pepper stated that he would LOVE to play for the Pats. So now that he's free, why would he change his mind. !!!

The aura surrounding the Patriots has changed.

They no longer have the feel of a "guaranteed Super Bowl contender".

Of course, a few big free agents could turn that around.

I think he wants the money AND to get out of Carolina.

The Bears are going to unload big bucks to get him....They are hungry Bears

Peppers is going to get more than 14M per year? That makes the Haynesworth deal look like Snyder was bargain bin shopping at the local Kmart! WTF??!! LOL.

I live in Carolina and nobody really knows what he wants.
I believe he just wants out of Carolina. He doesn't like being the center of the media and fans all the time. He is very quite.

He still wants his $$ but the question is how much?

Is this post a deja vu?

If the Patriots sign Peppers for that kind of money it will officially mark the beginning of the end of the BB era.

This is no longer a value signing.
There is no way a DE or OLB can return that kind of value to the team.

I for one am glad that I will no longer in any way feel disappointed if they don't sign him.

What a misleading thread. Just because he didn't accept Carolina's offer, doesn't mean he would only accept a contract at 14 million a year. Remember when the Pats threw a bunch of money at Derrick Mason only to end up with a crappy Baltimore team for less money? If anything, I take this as a sign that money may not be his motive like he said all along. You know, there are players in the NFL that do want a chance at winning a championship and Carolina isn't even close. I still have faith in the Pats and Peppers would certainly help their chances. If players like Peppers can get 10+ sacks with a losing team, imagine what he can do when opposing offenses become one dimensional and have to pass?
