Howe: Pats Ecstatic with Mac this Offseason (so far)

Third String But Playing on Special Teams
Truly one of the worst stat supported arguments I've seen on this board
I absolutely hate comments like this on this board. It has zero to do with having good debate and just attempts to belittle for no reason. Just unnecessary.

Huh?
Brandon Bolden was #2 in 3rd down receptions by RBs in 2021 with 18 receptions
Brandon Bolden was #2 in 3rd down receptions for 1st downs by RBs with 10 1st downs.

Most impressive about Bolden's stats last year is where he caught the ball and what he did with it

In 2021, Bolden amassed 405 receiving yards.
His YAC (yards after catch) was 416 yards

In other words, he averaged catching the ball 0.25 yds behind the LOS

On 3rd down...
Bolden amassed 191 receiving yds
His YAC on 3rd down was 193 yds

Bolden was the #1 DVOA receiving RB last year.

Good debate?
Too funny
The guy cherry picks stats and unbeknownst him disproves his very own hot take.

Here's a refresher on his brilliant thesis...

We also didn't have a reliable 3rd down RB like James White.

I'll award him a participation trophy next time so as not to offend those with delicate sensibilities.

My biggest concern is his mental fortitude when faced with a poor performance (individual or team-wise). Saban stated he had a tennis players mentality (John McEnroe), that took everything personally. He needs to be cold as ice to succeed.
The tennis player comment does not mean that Mac is fragile. John McEnroe was one of the most intense competitors in any sport not a flower, his rage drove him to succeed. It is ok to act like a moron in order to motivate yourself in an individual sport, not so much when you are supposed to be a leader of a team of 11 people in the heat of the battle. For Mac it is more about managing expectations and visibly responding in a way that gives the team confidence than him not being able to handle the pressure.

and unbeknownst to you, you just reproved my point again.

He might be wrong or you may disagree but comments like one of the worst stat responses i've seen on this boards have less to do with the subject and more to do with your need to put people down and score points. like i said it's unnecessary. It's only purpose was to either have a pop or make you feel slightly superior. If you need that.

I was thinking they should have cut bolden in training camp last year. I'm going to put that in my top 10 dumb football ideas "Hall of Fame." He had an outstanding season!

Sometimes it feels good to be wrong.
Bolden was also the #1 DVOA receiving back in the league last year. As with Bourne being #1, this was much more about Mac than Bolden. Neither Bourne nor Bolden had ever been much of anything before; they were clearly elevated by Mac's anticipation and accuracy in the short to medium game, particularly his ability to place the ball to maximize YAC.

The next big step for Mac is successful activation of his long ball game. Entering December of last year, he was verging on being a top 5 QB statistically despite having an ineffective long ball game. If he's improved his arm strength and/or Thornton and Agholor deliver: look out!

I love this:

“I tried to throw in the offseason in all conditions and increase my knowledge on that, and just go out there and get a feel for it and understand the wind, the rain, snow, whatever it may be. So I’m ready to go and it’s a learning experience – being the quarterback here, you have to be able to play in those elements, you have to be able to complete passes in those elements. So, I challenge myself with that and everyday there’s a new challenge.”

Not sure if he just means for himself and getting to know his team better compared to last year or if he means something else about last year. Interesting comments.
I feel the Cam experiment was detrimental to his development, he had to share first team reps with someone who could not throw anymore, was given the impression that he was not a starter, got to waste his time with backups and not developing the chemistry needed with those that he was actually going to throw to. Plus a few key players decided to skip OTAs and got found out for not knowing the playbook.. J. Smith.

To compare in 2019 White had 28 3rd down receptions and 17 went for 1st downs.

645 receiving yards and 523 after the catch.
On 3rd down he had 276 receiving yards.

My point earlier which might have been worded poorly was this is great that the work ethic might be there- but I wouldn’t expect anything different. He was drafted in the first round for a reason. If he WASN’T putting in the work didn’t have the work ethic and all that then the Patriots would have a problem.

I expect my franchise QB-to-be to be in the film room early etc and doing what it takes to get to the next level and become as great as we all want him to be.

I would expect A* franchise QB

I love this:
I just read that in the 5 things article Ian wrote yesterday... Agreed 100% that that is a good thing... Any extra edge he gets thru reps in the off season will help down the stretch come the regular season games... Especially considering both Buffaload games are late season contests...
