How to improve game-day threads?

I tend to avoid the board on gamedays because I'm usually annoyed enough my own. I don't need idiots adding to that.

On the plus side though, I've added another name to the ignore list.

Great topic. Speaking as someone who has yet to use the Ignore List, the gameday threads could be fun but are an abomination. Reading the discourse here it's obvious that folks have wildly differing opinions as to what constitutes appropriate reaction to Pats debacles. Me, I laugh at and sometimes share the feelings of those wanting an offending player cut or eviscerated at midfield, but I don't post those emotions and after reading one or two such tirades they become annoying.

Therefore the best solution would be a JOIN mechanism where each subscriber could select the Patsfan users he/she wanted to share the game with. Probably too complex to implement but any approach requiring active mods ain't gonna fly, cause mods are fans too and want to watch the game.

I would like to watch a game with Patspsycho so he could tell me about all the things that I don't get, and all the things that I don't get that I don't get. So I wish there was a game-day thread for people like him with huge football IQs that the rest of us could just read to understand what the hell is really going on. You know, something very technical and basically bjective but still coming from a Pats fan.

That probably sounds sarcastic but I swear it's sincere.

That's a very good idea. Sort of a "Tutorial Thread" where folks with bona-fide X's and O's credentials (coaches at any level, former players who understand the pro game) could do a commentary on the game and take questions from those of us who admit that we lack a lot of down and dirty technical knowledge.

Instead of just one "official gameday thread", I think we should have more threads going on gameday. The "official one" gets so big and moves so fast, people are just trying to be the first to post "Pats score!!!" or "Oh no, INT..." and then 10 more people say same thing... If we had a couple different ones going on, we could switch to the more intelligible one and could actuallly follow a little converastion - instead of just trying to keep up with 10 one liners every 30 seconds....

I'm open to suggestions.

Perhaps I should go back to the previous game threads and see who the worst offenders are, and go from there. Based on that perhaps certain people should be suspended from posting on Sundays?

Yes! This! Great idea!
Cut down on the clutter.

I have an idea.....it is pretty simple

how about people just sucking it up and not sweating what someone else posts? Is that so hard.

If you find the 'trade brady and dump BB' posts so disturbing, just ignore them.

It is equally pathetic to listen to people complain about what their eyes 'were forced' to see.

why not just have a weekly 'kumbaya' thread? you would not have to worry about seeing me there because it would be totally useless

I came to the game day thread on Sunday because we didn't get the game in Manhattan and my building doesn't have a dish and I'm too cheap to pay for the computer version. Like many, I was turned off by the immature tone and absurdity of a lot of the comments.

But, I wonder if the thread was really any different from any gathering of a cross section of Pats fans in a bar or home? I'm sure the reactions were loud and often silly in those places as well. In other words, is the "thread" just reflecting how people across the board react?

The discordant note that many of us feel results from the fact that we come here because we expect to find knowledgeable and fair-minded fans on game day, and we certainly do. But we also find people who don't understand the game as well and who maybe, just maybe, have imbibed a "wee drop of the creature," as my relatives would put it.

I say "live and let live" in the game day thread. If we don't like it we can either tune it out or not tune it in at all.

More than any other event, the game day thread opens itself up to knee jerk reactions - play after play. At some point "Yessss!" or "Noooo!" becomes ' cut this guy right now' and much, much worse. Where do you draw the line, beyond the obvious such as abusive language?

The other thing is that I want to watch the game, as every other moderator obviously does as well. I don't really want to be critiquing 1600 comments Sunday afternoon; I want to watch the game! I suppose one of us could each be 'assigned' to a different game, but it seems pretty sad to me that things would reach that point.

I don't know what the answer is, but if anybody has any suggestions I'd be happy to hear them and talk about them.

I don't know.

I tend to think that censorship out here should be reserved only for posts or posters who personally insult other posters, that demean or embarrass other posters in some way or that consistently hijack threads by making predictable and inane comments.

A lot of the posts in the game day threads qualify as "stupid" and "really immature" and "Wow, he really doesn't understand this game does he?," but I don't think that's cause for censorship.

I think offering an alternative thread, such as the one PJ suggested, where folks who really understand the X's and O's could provide an ongoing tutorial and forum for those of us who love the game but admit that we're not going to be coaching anytime soon would be a good idea. That could lead to some really serious discussion of the game. The rules would be clear that if you try to hijack that thread into an absurd conversation, you get booted.

one question: Can a fairly knowledgeable and fair football guy (me) post a negative post without being accused of being a troll?

one question: Can a fairly knowledgeable and fair football guy (me) post a negative post without being accused of being a troll?

That depends.

Would you post this?

I think that's the fourth Gronkowski drop today! I'm surprised they're still targeting him. His head is clearly not in the game. Bad day for the Pats.

Or this.

******* Gronk again! Just cut his ass. It's poor drafts like this that should get BB fired. Brady sucks. Get Hoyer in there!

Some of you have had the great idea of setting up a separate thread to the gameday thread.. perhaps we could call this the X and O thread? I would definitely be up for that. Only problem is we'd need another moderator to moderate that one thread and to boot out anyone who is just there to spoil everything.

By the way, I really dig the alternate thread idea.

So it's OK to complain about the complainers? And I really love the "only knowledgeable posters" thread idea. Where do we take the entrance exam? Now that we are no longer to post Randy Moss threads, can I add my thoughts to the very important "JETS SUCK" thread.

By the way, I really dig the alternate thread idea.

Won't work anymore than the supporters sub forum worked. Too many potential good moths will be drawn to the flaming version and consumed by it. Just like they and a lot of gawkers were drawn to this place during the NEM chronicles. It's human nature to gravitate to the train wreck.

When the game day threads first started they were seen as a means for those who could watch the game to impart to those who were stuck following online to gain some insight into what was happening. The were the rational alternative to game day chat which was overrun with trolls and negative kneekerks intent on venting or hijacking those chats into troll bashing vendettas. Then chat had issues and wasn't working as I recall and all the flotsum and jetsum discovered there was a thread they hadn't yet ruined, so they gravitated to it.

I get a kick out of the free speech crowd who rise up to defend their right to say or do whatever they please here and tell the rest of us to either live with it or get a life or find some other outlet. This board hasn't been this fractured or contentious since NEM last set foot in the place. I have a theory that because of the tortured way that all unfolded and the time it took to do something about it just opened the floodgates for every malcontent one note on the internet to locate and migrate to this place. KFFL refugees and Planet assclowns and ESPN board patsfans who wanted vent ugly thoughts about this team that was no longer winning it all and ruining their experience in a mixed setting just flocked here because Ian and his mods struggled so with the concept of moderation this place became easy pickings. The numbers went through the roof, killing one server after another. But that was OK because Ian convinced the core group here to pay for the pleasure of being marginalized - which is what the forum supporters sub forum attempted to do - in an effort to accommodate all comers on the main forum. And in the process it became increasingly impossible for this place to self moderate as it largely had in the past.

Every now and again Ian attempts to engage this group and suggest that it modify behavior in an effort to make the experience better for the majority. Last attempt was the consolidation of the post game venting experience into one massive thread. That seems to have gone by the boards until this week, as do most of his directives because his mods and he (not to mention each other) don't ever seem to be on the same page philosophically about what this place of his should be or how to maintain or manage it.

I'm frankly surprised this thread has managed to last this long without being locked. We have a habit of not discussing issues publicly here that smacks more of censure than anything else that ever happens here...

Good luck to all you windmill tilters. Including the new mod on the block. That's how pats1 started his tenure here. Now he seldom even posts...kinda like Miguel. Andy still attempts to put up the good fight here and there, but he usually ends up in conflict with mg...or like everyone else DI...Shmessy can be counted on to enter the fray if it's a troll you want to engage rather than remove. Nut weights in occasionally and warns everyone to behave themselves or else, knowing here or else is a hollow threat. Some mods here started out having limited moderating powers confined to specific sub forums. Not sure if that is still the case. Chick kept her draft forum pretty neat. Patters no so much...

Ian has ways of imposing tough love on posters short of bans or even suspensions. There is even one that confuses them for a time into thinking they are being ignored by everyone. He should use that more often. I'll probably be his second test target after this...

Sadly, I don't think it's possible to stop the bipolar, knee jerk reactions to team play during game day. Every Sunday this board turns into a bunch of unstable and overemotional teen girls.

That is highly offensive and uncalled for I can not believe you would stoop so low and be so insulting. You are paint with a wide brush and have made an completely overgeneralized insult. You owe an apology to unstable and overemotional teen girls everywhere for that analogy.

Funny there's a thread about this, I checked out the gamethread this week for the first time in eons and was really surprised by how lame it was.

Of course it's going to be reactionary stuff, but everything was SO extreme & lame. It was like hanging out at a bar filled with idiots.

Nothing to do about it, I don't think--maybe a sticky w/some guidelines, might thin it out a little.

We're not going to stop members from posting just becuase they are critical. That thread is always emotional and in the moment. It's not about well thought out opinions. If someone is breaking the rules (i.e. subverting the profanity filter, attacking another member) they will recieve a warning and or banning from the thread. If you just don't want to see a paticular posters comments there is always the ignore function.

Oh, Mo is here. I didn't see you while I was away typing my last post.
What? Shmessy is a chick? I think that's how it was intended to be read. I know the name & sex sentences are 2 or 3 apart, but I think that's what you were inferring.

And Mo, that post up there is pretty freaking intimidating.
Harkens visions of Berlin 1931, methinks

A bit megalomaniacal, dont cha think?

And I shudder at you being made a mod. Seriously.

Jeepers creepers, man. You gave me a chill. I thought Halloween was over.

Yikes! lol. That writing was similar to what I think I'd find if I opened up an NFL referee's pocket rule book.

Hey Mo, you go under the sideline replay booth hood to type that exposition up there? bwah.

Mo, that's too much. I'm wondering if your career requires technicality to that extreme. If yes, than hats off to you. If no, then you're in the wrong field.

I suggest law school, because that, up there, could be a doctorate thesis at Harvard.

A little misplaced energy perhaps?

That type of "I... am... Oz. The... great... and... powerful... Oz" posting creeps some people out.

Just my opinion,,, i hate gameday threads,,,,too busy either watching or listening to the game. So i say NO gameday threads, and just come back after the game and say what you have to say. Cheers

See that flies in the face of what Ian himself has done here. Because at some point incessant crititism and negativity from the purely malcontent "fan" becomes a form of trolling. And that game thread started out as one thing before it ended up being something else entirely. Why is it something else always wins out here? Mod group think philosophy seems to be the answer.
