How Ready is Meriweather as a Starter?

According to Fred Smerlas, not very ready. Let's discuss!

LOL. Just for the record, know that at least ONE person here got this. Well done.

For my benefit, would you please be more specific about who exactly said that Meriweather would have been cut?

Meriweather has A LOT to live up to as a first round pick, it is not good enough to just be serviceable as a safety, you have got to be damn good to be a first round safety.

So far, he has not impressed me as a first round pick. But I reserve the right to let him play out the season before I make up my mind.

When I think of first round picks, I think of Wilfork, Warren, Seymour. Guys that are freaks.

Hopefully, Meriweather will make an impact this year. That is what a first round pick does.

I agree withthis. And Fred Smerlas said he would have been cut. He didn't impress me at corner and has only 1 PS game at safety. I liked taking a safety in the and hoped for a guy who'd be making a impact just about imediately.

I think it's FANTASTICALLY early for anyone to be passing judgment on any kid - first rounder or not - who was seeing time at corner, and then got switched back to safety, which has a TON of responsibility, in this scheme especially. You don't play CLOSE to full speed, by instinct, with the system "in your bones" til probably NEXT YEAR, let alone now, when he's just recently been moved back there.

I guess I don't understand. We had a need at safety and we drafted on in the first round.

How can it be to early to assess the possibility of our #1 safety pick as a starter? Both are starting safeties may be out this week. At least one is out for four weeks. Shouldn't our #1 pick at least be CONSIDERED as a possible starter or even nickel back, if Gay needs to start ot free safety?

IMHO, it is no knock on him if he isn't ready, but he should at least be considered.

This is just one gal's opinion, but Meriweather looked like a changed man when they put him at safety where he belongs. I think he has a chance to be very good indeed at that position, but he scared me at CB. His strengths are field awareness, reaction and tackling, not pure athleticism.

I think Meriweather looks like an excellent free safety. Speed, awareness, sure tackler. I also think he is more athletic than any other safety, and better at coverage than Wilson. I think Smerlas is completely wrong. To say that Belichick kept a player because of his draft position only shows his ignorance. Belichick keeps players who help him one, or hasn't Smerlas noticed?

Haven't we said for years that Beoli hit on first rounders?

The question before the house is whether Meriweather is ready to start at free safety THIS WEEK if Wilson isn't able to start. What say you?

He wasn't comfortable at corner. That's not his position.

Let's condemn him, he's a bust.

I'm not sure I was clear. I meant that it's WAY too early to decide that the kid can't play at all and would deserve to get cut if only he weren't a #1 pick. The thing Smerlas is reported to have said.

I agree with you that it's not too early to see if the kid can start THIS WEEK. Just too early to make a definitive, ultimate judgment on how good he can, and will, be.

If Wilson can't start Meriweather is as good as anybody. He was a fine safety at a major school.

No ones ready to start, but since Rodney screwed up, somebody will have to if geno can't.

Belichick moves guys around so much starting can be irrelevant anyway.

I would go with him as a starter(hence if wilson is out I declare BM ready to start) before Gay. Is any rookie truly ready to start?

Based on the limited sample I saw of him at free safety I was impressed.

I like his instincts before Gay who is a corner and let's remember that Gay has been out two years.

I'm excited about the rookie.

It is a good thing that we start against the jets. Hopefully, Wilson and Samuel will be fully ready for the chargers.

I think the Jets have better wr's than the Chargers. This time around we have AD to cover Gates, people seem to forget that and he'll help with Dallas Clark when the Colts come.

Cotchery and Coles are pretty good. Remember last year the missed tackles by Wilson etc?

Isn't San Diego missing Eric Parker from toe surgery?

The Jets are not a team to underestimate.
