It's the pink elephant in the room. It's the emperor without his clothes. Everybody knows it needs to be done but nobody wants to talk about it.

Aqib Talib. When he is healthy, this defense is above average in the secondary. When he's not there, it looks like a swiss cheese defense. So how much is it worth to keep a #1 corner in New England? A guy who has proven himself in our system.

Tough question, I open the discussion to my fellow Patriots fans. I'll start with observing that Deangelo Hall recently signed a 4 year 20 million dollar extension with the Washington Redskins. That's 5m per season for one team's starting CB. However, it is reasonable for Talib to argue that he is better and more talented than Hall. But it does set a starting point for the market.

That being said here would be my proposal to Talib's agent - 3 years/21 million dollars with health based and playoff incentives. That is he needs to stay healthy to get paid. And if he performs to an all-pro level, he will get bonuses for top play. Fair deal? Too much, too little? You decide! How much would you PAY to keep Talib on the Patriots?

I'd be fine with that as long as the contract itself is loaded with health-based incentives. We're talking about a guy that, when healthy, is capable of being a top five CB in this league. At the same time, he has had one nagging injury throughout his entire career: the hip. We all know it's just a matter of time before that flares up. The team would need to protect themselves against that on top of maybe looking for a corner elsewhere for depth purposes. It's too bad they can't free themselves from that disgustingly horrid contract they gave Arrington just yet. Have to imagine Bill was hitting the sauce early that morning when he decided that was a good idea.

Kyle Arrington's contract always begs the question why did we pay that much for him? I think Logan Ryan pretty much out performed him last season, even before Kyle was injured.

Ask him to take a pay cut and give Talib 6-7 mil a year.

Top 5 of Talib, Dennard, Ryan, Arrington, and Green is pretty solid. Green looked pretty good in the limited action he saw I think he is a guy to keep an eye on.

It will probably cost $7-7.5M/year AAV to keep Talib. Anything less is a bargain; more is probably not manageable. How many years and how that is structured is open. Incentives based on playing time and achievable goals is good.

I'd rather go 4 years at 6 million per with 500k bonuses in each year for #of games played.

the biggest knock on him is that he has missed some key games, and because of that I cant see the team giving north of 6 million per year.

3/18 isnt going to get it done as this could be his last contract, but 4/24 might tempt him a bit even though contracts are not guaranteed and as an added bonus bring blount back at 1.5 per year. Give talib his best friend, and an okay contract.

Since he made $5M last year, he'll probably ask for more than that. Also throw in his age and this may be his last big contract. I don't think $6M will keep him, but probably closer to $7-8M. Does that prevent the Pats from doing other things? I don't know, but if he goes somewhere else, that will be leave a big hole to fill.

That would be a very good deal for the Pats.

3 years/24 million dollars with health based and playoff incentives. Even with the Injuries our Defense is absolutely different Defense with Talib out there. With him out *trainwreck*. After the Denver game we are forced to sign him unless we like seeing opposing Offenses play catch with the alternatives.

I think this may be the way to sell Talib on taking a bit less: "We'll pay you $8M/year but we won't have the money to re-sign your best friend in football; if you are willing to take a bit less, then we can re-sign Blount, too. Your choice."

I'm betting the contract would look a lot like Amendola's with significant per game $$$ that protects NE.
Given the facts
-Two years of part time play and getting knocked out in the biggest games
-Kraft publicly discussing Talib's injury issues
......seems logical for NE to want to protect themselves.....so ultimately, how willing will Talib be to take $$$$ risk with NE vs any other team willing to take on more $$$ risk themselves

This kind of logic is not what the patriots do. And if they say anything resembling what you have said, there is no reason to trust the world of the team.

Do you remember 2013?

Tommy, if you leave $7-$10M a year on the table, we'll be able to sign more offense to help your, starting with Welker this year.

Belichick will do what's best for the team, and make it clear who is boss.

Amd this was not the first time. The team, Brady, and the league, still remembers Brady's best friend on the team being cut less than a week before the season and playing against him less than a week later.

The question is not AAV. The issue is guaranteed money.

Of course BB will do what's best for the team. I wasn't attempting to suggest anything else. But re-signing both Blount and Talib for reasonable money is strongly in the team's best interest.

Yes, indeed.

However, Talib's agent should not be duped into believing that if Talib accepts less this action would affect the team's decision to sign Blount.

An initial offer to Talib might be 4/$22M including $10M guaranteed, and $14M over the first 2 years. In addition, there would health and performance incentives.

That was Bodden's contract.

Personally, I doubt that this would be enough or reasonable. Talib has already proved himself as one of the top corners in the league within Belichick's defense.

I agree, both that Bodden's contract is a starting point, and that it won't be enough.

I think the high end is around 4/$30. The question is, how much of the difference between Bodden's deal and the high end can be incentivized.

Why on Earth would the Patriots insult Talib with the first offer, the way you're suggesting? That's only $500k more per year than the lowball number they stuck him with last year. The franchise number for cornerbacks is being projected at over $11m per year.

Games played incentives don't always work the way they are supposed to. Look at Amendola. Since he had those incentives he stayed out on the field with his bum groin and just ran around but wasn't effective for a large portion of the season.

I'd just give him the franchise tag at this point. I really don't want Talib for more than two years at a time and I doubt his agent would accept a two year deal. He's also nearing 30 with a nagging hip injury. The major breakdown in his abilities could come real quick and I'd rather not be on the line for future years if that should happen in year 2 of a 4 year deal.

I go back and forth on Talib. My current state of mind is that if we can get a durable safety for whatever we would be willing to pay Talib, I much prefer that. If we can't, then sign him because I don't see another way to maintain the secondary.

Another alternative might be to take his money and add pieces to the defensive line, but I feel like we need both:

A) Add depth/talent to the DL
B) Keep Talib, replace Talib with an equivalent CB, OR add a dependable and talented safety with that money.
