How many QB's go in the first round? The answer to this question will have an impact on the quality of player available to us at #27 and #32.

Luck is a lock as a first rounder, a blue chip prospect and possibly the best QB that college football has seen since Manning.

Griffin is a lock and almost undoubedly a top ten selection.

The free agent market is going to have Brees and Flynn and possibly Manning all sign prior to the draft. Brees to New Orleans, and Flynn possibly to Washington.

Who else would be interested in a first round QB? Seattle, Miami, Cleveland, and possibly Arizona and Dallas?

Rumors are Dallas loves Tannyhill.

Would any team consider Weedon a 28 year old QB worth a first round pick?

Would any team consider Osimirier a 6'8" QB a first round talent?

re: How Many First Round QB's? Impact On Who Is Available At 27 & 31?

Gil Brandt thinks Tanneyhill is a top 10 pick. I don't see it. But, QB's are always in demand. Maybe, Seattle takes him at 11 or 12. Can't find link. But, read somewhere that Foles and Weeden are also first round possibilities now. That's crazy talk. But, I didn't think much of Locker and Ponder going into last years draft. Osweiler 2nd maybe. Cousins improved his stock 2nd maybe now??

To swing this around to the Pats. Would any teams be interested in trading for Mallett? He's a better prospect than all but Luck and RG3. If RG3 goes 2nd in a trade, would Cleveland give up their first in 2013(next year) for Mallett? Allows them to get their weapons this year. Two firsts and an early 2nd. Get a pro-ready qb without giving up any picks this year. Mallett isn't exactly WCO prototype. But, I think playing in Cleveland you would want someone with a strong arm.

Ditto. How flipping entertaining was it though when they went as surprise selections however? My wife thought I was crazy with the level of enthusiasm I was showing not to mention yelling at the TV gleefully are you F'IN kidding me as they went off the board. She kept saying it's only a draft. Only a draft?

I so hope it happens again.

Funnily enough, Mocking The Draft have just posted an article about Denver looking for a QB, although not necessarily first round. Money quote:

Elway was quoted as saying that he is looking for "the big athlete who can throw the ball from the pocket."

Hmmm. Does that sound like anyone we know?

And Matt Miller @nfldraftscout ranks the available QB's this offseason thusly:

Ranking the available QBs this offseason: 1. Andrew Luck 2. RG3 3. Matt Flynn (UFA) 4. Brian Hoyer (RFA) 5.Brandon Weeden

re: How Many First Round QB's? Impact On Who Is Available At 27 & 31?

One of the big things i am interested in this draft season is how the league see's Hoyer's value. I am hoping that Cassel's semi success and hoyers solid play when given the chance will help his stock.

We will see i guess. May end up just staying here.

Six QBs went in the first 36 picks last year. I don't think anyone thought it would be that many. Still many teams "need" a QB. You could easily argue that the Pats had the three best QBs in the AFC East on their roster last year. Again, every team that takes a QB leaves a better postion player sliding down towards the Pats picks.

I think the back-up situation alos has to be addressed by many teams judging by the caliber of QBs that were forced to take the field last year. I would think the following teams need a starter:

(in draft order)
Indy
Cleveland
Washington
Miami
Seattle

Teams who are looking to upgrade/competition/back-up for thier current starter:
Tampa Bay
Indy (they are not bringing back Painter, so they are also going to need a back-up)
Jacksonville (I don't think Gabbert is the answer)
kansas City
Arizona
Dallas
Jests
Chicago
Pittsburg (Charlie Batch is like 107 years old, and the jocktapus has not been able to play a full season lately)
Denver
Green Bay (Flynn's replacement)
San Fran

So Expect Hoyer to get some play in Free Agency. I would hit him with a second round tender and maybe trade him for a third. Mallett will be ready to handle back-up duties.

People talked about how bad the QB class was last year, but outside of RG3 and Luck this year's doesnt impress me at all. If weeden wasnt so old it might be better

Why would KC, who have Cassel, Palko, and Stanzi, be looking to add another back-up QB?

Also, figure on Flynn to either the Seahawks or Miami, reducing one team out of the need to draft on early.

I know a lot of people say cleveland will be looking for a QB, but I am not convinced they are ready to give up on Colt McCoy.

They might not like their backups or they might want a sleeper backup that can be groomed to take over for Cassel because they dont like him.

I suggested that earlier this year . . . I can still feel the scorch marks.

I think Palko has a pop gun arm and guys like him and Lienhart for example that have pop gun arms just don't sem to make it in the NFL.

The Chiefs added Stanzi last year and, from my understanding, really like him. I think Palko has more than a "pop-gun" arm. Where I think that Palko is lacking is in his decision making. He tends to rely on his ability to run the ball. He also doesn't have the greatest footwork.

I think it's more likely that, if KC is looking for a "back-up" it will be a late in the draft guy. A guy like Cousins or Cunningham..

re: How Many First Round QB's? Impact On Who Is Available At 27 & 31?

If Mallett is truly better than any QB not named Luck or Griffin in this draft, then I don't see how he isn't worth a mid-first rounder. Plenty of value in that contract too.

If Mallet and Griffin are both coming out in the same year and Mallet does not have the character concerns of last year, I take Mallet over Griffin. And I would take Luck over either of them.

That being said, the fact that Mallet played a year in our system I think that decreases his value to other teams since they won;t be able to "mold" him in their system.

re: How Many First Round QB's? Impact On Who Is Available At 27 & 31?

I hope RG3 goes to Washington. Those poor schmucks haven't had a good QB in 20 years

I think trading Mallet would be a mistake. He has all the tools you look for in a QB, let him learn at the feet of the master. If this year proved anything, it is that you need a quality back-up QB. Mallet hhas a low thrid round salary with a first round arm. Keep him.

Why couldnt they mold him? Won't a rookie QB have to learn their system as well?

Wouldn't that all depend on how much we can get for him? If we can get a 1st round pick for him I think BB would personally drive him to the airport.

Yes, but at the cost of time and experience. Mallet has one year gone on his contract already, he needs another year to learn a new system and he has no experience on the field in actual games.

These factors are part of the reason why young backups are so risky. Teams like to start fresh with kids they control from day 1.

I could not agree more. I think if BB could get a conditional 1st rounder for him, he might be tempted to get the car started as well.
