Haynesworth indicted

Suspension. NFL players are role models when they are behind the wheel.

Warning: Tangent

I don't think that NFL players are "Role Models" per se. I think the correct term is "example". Also, I think people over-value the effect of celebrities on people/children (Role Models are, after all, "for the children", right?).

Let's say little eight year old Joey, who is an avid NFL fan, hears about what Haynesworth did. Is he now more likely to, either now or in the future, to reproduce the incident? I argue a steadfast NO. He sees what happens, his parents tell him it was a bad thing to do because driving like an idiot is a bad thing to do. Then he sees Haynesworth get punished. Haynesworth has served as an EXAMPLE, not a ROLE MODEL.

Sure, SOME NFL players are role models, but some are also just good examples of what not to do. It's ridiculous to assume that just because NFL players are in a visible position that they be held to some role model standard by the fans. The NFL wants to hold them to a higher standard to improve the image of the game, and that's fine -- I'm just saying don't expect these people to raise your kids with Christian values over the TV set.

Well, I'd certainly hope parents raise their kids to be moral rather than to be Christians, but that tangent aside:

I think you're arguing semantics rather than substance, and I further think you got the semantics wrong. Athletes who act in approved ways are role models. Athletes who get punished for acting in disapproved ways are examples. One point doesn't contradict the other.

Haynesworth Indicted - Redskins Insider

You've got to wonder how the Ommissioner will react now.
That's tough to say. My first thought was to compare it to Marshawn Lynch hitting somebody and leaving the scene a year ago, and he got nothing. But Goodell has made it a point that his code of conduct applies to players who bring negative light upon themselves and the NFL multiple times. Since Haynesworth has already been suspended for his foot-stomping act, it's like he is on probation and Goodell has zero tolerance for anything else. And speaking of probation, making matters worse is the fact that Haynesworth was already on (real) probation prior to the accident, for speeding (103 mph.) He may end up having to do a week or two in jail for violation of probation.

This event by itself is nothing, but the making headlines for the wrong reasons multiple times may result in getting suspended for a couple of games.
