Greg Bedard's assessement of game 1

He finds plenty encouraging about the defense, despite the yards allowed:

Overnight ratings are high - The Boston Globe

Love how Bedard offers actual football analysis. (The print edition of the article even includes a - *gasp* - play diagram!) And props to the Globe for encouraging it, rather than assigning him some human-interest piece about a player's brave dog or some such.

Can he play safety?

He put the Henne touchdown run on Guyton. It should be interesting to see how much playing time Guyton gets next week.

Bedard knows his football. He can dissect schemes and the probable assignment of each offensive & defensive player. He has broader context in evaluating the pats, having covered the Packers for years. He dealt with demanding readers who themselves understood football and did not allow themselves to be snowed. You know they take their football seriously in Green Bay/Milwaukee -- after all, their main streets are named after football legends.

Bedard is different from Bert Breer and Mike Reiss (though the latter is likeable and diligent). Neither personally provide the kind of detailed, consistent insight and analyses than Bedard does. But both Breer and Reiss have the advantage of being backed by NFL-centric sports media organizations.

I for one plan to enjoy Bedard's analyses while he is covering the Pats -- which I hope is for a long time. But I would not be surprised if he is offered more money/prominence by SI, Comcast or another network given the Globe's financial situation.
