Greg Bedard assessments: Texans game, Drake Maye performance

I know the definition of "grifting," just not sure why you suggest it's something unique to Felger/Mazz and not typical of sports talk radio in general. But, please try to separate that from what Bedard offers.

If we want to accuse anyone of selling their soul to the devil I'd start with Tom Curran. He is excellent when he just sticks to what he sees and what he knows. He really sucks rocks when he starts spinning and fabricating. He's trying to playing the role of the heel but he sucks at selling it, unlike Felger who excels at it.

Felger/Mazz has always been what it still is, hot takez. Curran succumbed to the Dark Side. Even worse he wants to have his cake and eat it too. He wants to come across as being the elder statesman of the Patriots beat, but also wants to do click bait at the same time. It just doesn't work.

Nothing wrong with what Bedard said about Maye. Is he supposed to give him a participation trophy and a A grade just because it's the Pats? He had some good plays and he had some bad plays. Most of the good plays came while they were getting their asses kicked. That screen pass later in the game looked like what a backup QB would do.

In Mac Jones' first start he threw for more yards than Maye and didn't have a turnover, but you still could see major concerns with his game

The team hasn't been very good so it makes sense that recent analysis of a team has been negative. But the same way a coach has to handle a bad team differently than a great team, I think the media coverage should be different as well. This team sucks. We get it. When the team was a perennial contender, fine, spend time dissecting and complaining about every chink in the armor and assign blame for it. A team like that, sure, measure them against perfection. But doing that with a terrible team like this is just unlistenable for me. It's too depressing.

I'm not saying the media should pretend the team doesn't suck. But shift the coverage to more forward looking. Discuss actually constructive ideas for improvement. What do you think the draft needs are? Talk about potential targets. Just shift the discussion to something that's actually interesting and stimulating. Just rehashing how bad they are and going over personnel moves from the last decade, while all valid criticisms, just makes me disinterested in following any of the coverage.

Others have said that he's grading Maye negatively because he's evaluating as an NFL starter in general rather than on the scale of a rookie making his first start on a bad team. That's fine, but a rookie making his first start on a bad team is what he is. That's the situation him and the team are in. If you're part of the local coverage, why WOULDN'T you be discussing the team from that perspective? I don't get that. Again, not saying pretend like it's all the same scale, but tailor your coverage of the Pats for where the Pats are.

The problem with Bedard’s assessment is that he says he doesn’t grade on a curve. It’s hard to give much of an assessment of Maye when you ignore all the factors involved and opponent.

In general I've argued for not slagging our front office, coaches and players, but have a hard time thinking Maye should be assessed in a hypothetical situation where he has a good OL, a good scheme, good creators around him, and plays against a hypothetical middle of the road team.

Personally I'm ok with reading Maye gets a C- but part of that was because he was playing against a good opponent, behind a bad OL, with a meh scheme and with some pretty meh WRs/TEs/RBs.

Bedard could bump the grade up based on some imaginary curve, but IMO that'd just be optics.

i've been called a snowflake here before, but I'm not that much of a snowflake that I get upset about a grade a sports writer makes up and insist he boost it so the optics are less upsetting.

We were soooo spoiled. I remember thinking what’s this garbage in 2009 ! Hahaha. What was I thinking ?
I know.. hahaha.. one thing I can say is.. no matter what happened with the roster of the years. Having stability at the most important position in sports can't be overstated. Drake gives us hope. He makes others better, he just oozes leadership and killer instinct.. guy wants to win. First full game and to have 3 TDs so impressive.

Agreed on the fumble , protection wasnt good but the ball needs to get out. Or he has to tuck it in for the sack. On tape there were 2 guys open pretty early, not sure if they were just later in the progression or he just couldn’t decide on where to go, im ok with missing the open guy but protecting the ball is priority.

The second pick was a fluke imo, not gonna hold that against him. Most of the time those are batted down at worst. You often see passes batted down at the los but in my memory very rare it pops softly into a defenders arms.
Don't forget the hooper fumble as well.

See my tagline for how I feel about all opinions Bedard has, good or bad.

Meh. One bad take from 15 years ago doesn't invalidate everything following. The Patriots arguably lucked out with Gronk, drafting him in the second round after he missed his last season at Arizona with a bad back.

Curran's personal investment in cheerleading Mayo from when Jerod was on his show also calls his objectivity into question. This will really be put to the test should the Pats keep losing.

I will pre-face this with, I like Bedard. But Jesus, I watched the first 5 minutes of that first clip. Are you ****ing kidding me? **** off with that ****!

It's not one bad take though. There are so many times I rewatch the game because of what he has said to see if I missed something and I almost never change my opinion. Other people who break down film change my opinion regularly. I remember him calling Shaq Mason the best guard in the league and I continuously found him lacking. When we traded him I wasn't surprised.

Over the years you and I generally have very similar takes. If you like Bedard I'm happy to agree to disagree. When it comes to Bedard breaking down film I don't see it. At all.

Well, Shaq is still playing, and didn't look bad against us last week.
