Getting to Know...Rob Ninkovich

Rob Ninkovich has to be in the top 10 in the NFL this year in quarterback pressures. He's this decade's Mike Vrabel, the underused journeyman linebacker who plays a role Bill Belichick needs to make his defense work
from today's Peter King "Monday Morning Quarterback"

He'd been cut four times by the Dolphins and Saints, going back and forth between the practice squad and 53-man roster for both teams before arriving in New England during training camp last season.

Rob Ninkovich and QB pressures

The Vrabs comment is a little over the top at this early stage of RN Patriots carrer but if Ninko is in the top 10 in QB pressures maybe we don't appreciate his work enough because it doesn't show up in official NFL stat column. I don't have the time to look back at each game book to see if the comment is true, they do keep QB hurries stat there. I know the NFL doesn't keep this stat officially.

Agreed, the Vrabel comment is over the top considering how early it is.

I'd be careful with what King writes though. He doesn't say Vrabel IS in the top 10. He says "has to be." Which sounds like he hasn't bothered to check.

I also don't think the NFL game books keep that as a stat. They have a QH but that's for hits on the QB.

Football Outsiders has compiled a list up to week 10
, though I know a lot of people don't find their stuff reliable, but it's still a good starting point. Ninko isn't anywhere on this list.

And the fact that Ninkovich hasn't caught any TD passes from a Patriots QB.

Maybe BOB will coach him up in the Bye week.

Peter King is a prolific writer - and a lousy researcher. He would much rather spew conjecture in a national column than take 5-10 minutes to determine what the facts are.

I still occasionally read his column and it amazes me that someone who is so well-known nationally so often will either state things that just aren't true or freely admit to (wild) conjecture that is often demonstrably false. But that's who he is. We are the fools for continuing to elevate this nonsense to the status of well-reasoned NFL commentary.

Re: Getting to Know...Rob Ninkovich

Always thought that Peter King wants to be the Peter Gammons of old.. remember the half page columns in the Sunday Globe, was always amazed at the facts that Gammons had access to.

Fast forward to today, Peter King imitation is a poor resemblance, as he forgot about the facts..

Re: Getting to Know...Rob Ninkovich

This column on Ninkovich by Mike Petraglia is a little bit better than Peter King's.

It Is What It Is Rob Ninkovich certainly has fond memories of the Dolphins

Things couldn’t have gone much better the last time Rob Ninkovich faced one of his former teams.

The linebacker recorded his first two career interceptions and helped the Patriots defense confuse and other confound Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne in a 41-14 romp at Dolphins Stadium on Oct. 4. He also sacked the quarterback once, defended two passes and hurried the quarterback on another snap.

“It’s always fun to play against a team that you’ve actually been on and you know the guys on the team,” Ninkovich said of playing his ex-mates. “Hopefully, I can repeat, have a repeat performance.”

Actually he has caught a touchdown pass from an NFL quarterback:

Ninkovich played at Joliet Junior College before playing at Purdue – where he caught a TD pass from Kyle Orton. Ninkovich was a star defensive end when he was drafted by the Saints in fifth round of the 2006 NFL Draft. After a successful 2006 rookie season, his first stint with the Saints ended before the 2007 season when he was carted off with a knee injury that forced him to miss the preseason. But he was picked up by the Dolphins and played for the team that won just one game.

Re: Getting to Know...Rob Ninkovich

I wish Mary Paoletti would write more often, her columns on the Patriots are always well worth reading.

Here's one from today on Rob Ninkovich; some background from his childhood, his college days that I'm sure none of us are aware of, and quotes from his defensive coach at Purdue.

Ninkovich carves his niche in New England

Those who know him best aren’t surprised with his recent success. Mark Hagen, who worked with Ninkovich as a defensive coach at Purdue, believes it was inevitable.

“Rob is probably one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around,’’ Hagen said. “I’ve been in college football for 15 years and I can probably only put one other guy in his category in terms of how hard he works and how hard he plays. He’s the type of guy that never takes a down off and you can’t really say that about a lot of players.

“He’s had some adversity here and in the years leading up to his time in New England, but none of his accomplishments surprise me, knowing the type of guy he is. There’s nothing that’s going to stand in his way. Once he sets a goal he’s going to find his way to reach it.’’

“That's one thing that coach Belichick has really been able to do in building some of the great teams that he's had, is take guys who may be under the radar but who fit his profile of being willing to work hard every day, be willing to pay the price," Hagan said. "I think he's found a guy like that in Rob Ninkovich. He knew Rob could play on his feet, that he had some athleticism about him; a guy who could play hard every snap, who could play special teams."

“When he got picked up by the Patriots I thought to myself, 'There's no better place for him because of the system that's in place there and what coach Belichick has done with similar guys.' ''

Re: Rob Ninkovich and QB pressures

Just wait til the Super Bowl

He caught a TD pass from Orton when they were at Purdue..in the same game that he had 2 sacks.....That's Vrabelesque....

I didn't know that. Now I really can't wait to see if BB pulls this out at the Super Bowl.

Re: Getting to Know...Rob Ninkovich

It just amazes me what BB can do with these players that no other team could do with them.

Re: Getting to Know...Rob Ninkovich

I wonder if he'd every be playing ILB as he has about the right size...

I always thought he had good hustle and was getting good pressure on the QB. Some were calling him Stinkovich, but I always liked him.

:rocker:

Re: Getting to Know...Rob Ninkovich

People also expect him to be the strong side rusher, He has size ,speed and fluidity to play weakside for us. Him and Flecter for sure. The other key is OLB have to read line play as you can see flecter and him get sacks when the protection slides or someone makes a mistake. They having played on the line rush getting a free shot at QB.

Strong side guys are bigger usually as they rush more than drop in coverage where as weakside guys generally cover TE or RB and set run edge, They have more coverage responsibilty hence bigger ones struggle. Look at woodley rather than harrison. The problem pittsburg we exploit is both its OLB are more strong types and they do not have a Weakside OLB like ROB.
Also steelers strength is its LB core so they keep them in there .

we make sure we go wide making their OLB cover our speedy smaller guys.Once you get this big guys back pedalling to cover then you run at them.

This is first season playing and next year i see alot of improvement coming for ROB especially with the return of TY who is very strong against the run meaning ROB can get more faverable matchups.

Ninkovich carves his niche in New England

FOXBORO -- Rob Ninkovich was a punch line in a Patriots jersey.

His presence in New England seemed only a symptom of the Adalius Thomas problem. Was the relationship so rotten between Thomas and his team that a discarded Saints long snapper, a Miami practice squad cast-off, would be a step up?

Apparently.

Not even Bill Belichick was aware of Ninkovich’s potential.

“I don’t really know what our expectations were when we got him,’’ the Patriots coach admitted. “We had an extra spot, so we brought him in and he started playing and took advantage of his opportunities. So, he carved out a special role for himself and Rob’s gotten better over the two years that he’s been here.

“When we first got him, it was kind of a last-minute thing – get a guy in here for training camp and all that. There wasn’t really a lot of preparation put into the signing other than by Nick [Caserio] and Jason Licht and our personnel department, they got who they felt was the best player available at that position.”

And look who’s laughing now.

Ninkovich’s fifth season in the NFL has been his best. The linebacker has 45 tackles and 17 assists, 4.0 sacks and two interceptions in 16 games for the Patriots. He’s started 10 games, including a Week 4 New England win over his old team in Miami. That night, Ninkovich sacked Chad Henne and recorded his first two career interceptions.

In the regular season finale against the Dolphins, Ninkovich beat his chest a little bit with four tackles -- three for a loss -- two sacks and a fumble recovery. If there were still any doubts about Rob Ninkovich’s role, they can now share the casket with Miami’s season.

His chance arose in 2009 with some help from another player's fall from grace. Thomas was reaching the apex of unhappiness in New England. The linebacker clashed with his coach, refusing to admit that his lessened role reflected decreased productivity. An especially poor performance in the Patriots’ Week 5 loss to Denver was rock bottom for Thomas. Ninkovich saw opportunity.

“Last year I was just doing the special-teams thing all year, whatever I could do on defense,’’ Ninkovich explained. “Obviously, I was excited; AD was ‘the guy.’ I was just patiently waiting to have an opportunity to get out on the field. I think Denver was my first play and it was a sack so it was pretty cool.”

I don't think this was posted before and just thought I'd share. I found it interesting. I really love how the pats are a team built on hard working players. Ninkovich really showcases this.

Pleases delete if it was already posted

Enjoy!!

I hope everyone starts to slow down with the Vrabel references. Vrabel could set the edge with the best of them. Ninkovich, while a good pass rusher, still needs a lot of work in edge-setting area.
