Great draft for LB and Secondary, but what are we doing at DT?

Both Deaderick and Love took turns getting benched in the 2nd half of the SB in favor of Ellis/Warren. Wilfork was the only DT that Belichick fully trusted in that game. I think that says something.
I don't think that is accurate. You may be mistaking sub packages for benchings.
But your point that those players are not what we'd ideally like to have out there is on the money.

Tom Curran tweeting that pats will re-up Big Money. Gerard Warren. I thought he played well last year. Glad he's coming back for some un-finished business. I'd like to have six fatties for our defense. Wilfork, Deaderick, Fanene and K. Love. Warren would be the 5th. Last spot comes down to; Pryor, Harrison, Brace and Fortson. No idea which one BB likes best. I think the 4-2-5 is your base defense. That gives you 6 fatties to rotate into the two interior spots with enough depth to play the conventional 3-4 on some 1st down plays.
No problem with 6, but I really hope the 6 are better than that.

We have never been thinner at 34 DE/43DT in BBs years.
Wilfork and a bunch of guys who shouldn't be starting in the base, and Fanene and a bunch of jags in the sub is not something to consider set.

I think the coaching staff disagrees with your assessment of Deaderick. Just FWIW.

What subpackages are there where Wilfork, Warren and Ellis are out there? Because those 3 were out there and Deadrick and Love were not.

Yes.

.................

If I could uplink to my eyesight and memory banks, I would. Watch the Super Bowl again if you've DVR'd it. You'll see Ellis and Warren playing the majority of the 2nd half.

Ellis saw his snaps increase significantly in the second half, but not necessarily as an indictment of Deaderick's play, as Reiss noted at the time.

I agree with all that the condition of our big DL unit needs to get better. We just didn't have enough draft picks to do fix the D in 1 offseason. We still have some cap space left so hopefully there's somebody worth it who can improve the unit. FWIW I believe we will see even less Big DL PT this year and more DE pass rushers on the field.

I also think Brace could get beat out. As we focus more of our attention on stopping the pass it will be reflected in the positional groupings.

Run stuffing DL depth: Wilfork, Love and Deaderick, Brace
Pass Rushing DL Depth: Fanene, Warren, Pryor (injury prone), Forston

plus others DL competition. My point is we have 3 guys who do a good job as run stuffers. But Warren is old and Pryor has no production and few games played. We need some interior rushers and Brace doesn't do that well.

Still a little mad we passed up DT Worthy for S Wilson but it is what it is :bricks:

Even during the telecast, Simms noted that Deadrick was being blown up.

Something to keep in mind regarding our DL for next year is our schedule. We have the NFC West. No conference in Football runs the ball more than the NFC West. Frank Gore, Marshawn Lynch, Beanie Wells, and Steven Jackson. We need some fatties in there to take up space and let Mayo & Co. rack up the tackles.

Not a lot of loving for Kyle Love here. I think people underrate him for some reason.

I agree. I don't think I read anything in this thread that illustrates a competent analysis of our players on the Dline. Once again it seems as if people believe a players talent level is dictated by the round he was drafted in. In reality nobody here knows whether Love or Deaderick are mediocre talents or budding stars. I suspect that if BB thought they were the marginal players described in this thread, they wouldn't be here. I'm looking forward to seeing both of them build on what I thought was solid play last season. Also looking forward to having Pryor back.

As far as the players we drafted, I'd be surprised to see Jones make much of an impact. I see him being "redshirted" while Cunningham reemerges. Ironically, I see the largest rookie impact being made by our "wtf" second round pick. BB always ends up with the last laugh over his critics.

I love your post, and I agree with a lot of what you said.

However, I would expect Hightower to have an increased role as the season progresses, so I think he will be relevant this season.
