Just came across a piece on O'Brien in the Brown Alumni mag. No great football insights, but the heir apparent to the OC job is usually such an unknown quantity that it was interesting to get a glimpse of his style. The take-home messages:

- O'Brien is considered a good communicator and lots of fun to be around, with a great sense of humor and a knack for storytelling.

- He absolutely loves coaching, and knew he wanted to be a coach even before he entered college.

Best excerpt: at the final team dinner for his college team, the coach asked every senior to say a few words about the team and his time at Brown...

"I stood up," recalls Scott Perry '92, "and thanked Bill O'Brien for being such a good friend and being a bright spot in an otherwise pathetic season."

Perry was not the only senior to thank O'Brien that night. In fact, according to Perry, every senior rose and thanked O'Brien for his camaraderie. The love fest finally prompted one of the coaches to ask: "Why the heck is everyone thanking Billy?"

Sounds like a leader with good social and situational sense.
