Gasper: System failure

It's possible that Gasper has an axe to grind, but it's also entirely possible that BB is too proud and stubborn. The man isn't perfect. It's actually our (and Indy's...more so Indy's) fault that the league is starting to 'read and attack.' We tore everyone up for so long that people needed to figure out how to counter. Incidentally, Belichick also taught everyone how to counter it. We just don't have the man power anymore.

Philly shows that it's really not all that difficult to get pressure with the right system. All they have is a pretty good secondary and Trent Cole, and they do just fine.

It seems that under Peas, the two gap read and react they run is much more passive than what they would run in the Super Bowl. Gasper has some good points here. The read and react defense is hard to run. With the inexperience of the defense there's a lot of reading and not a lot of reacting.

This team is stuck between fronts. The lack of a DE end and someone to play the JUMBO at LB, we are screwed. The sooner they get in and stay in 43 the happier we'll all be. They have looked good running 43 this year. In years past not so much. At some point they gotta stop hoping they are going to get edge pressure from their current cast, They have the ponies to start getting pressure right up the gut. I just wonder if they are gonna do it. One of those clips from playbook, they had no Wilfork (nickle or dime) and literally no one covering anyone in the guard box. I am no rocket scientist and I know they like to get big Vince off the field on third down. They have to be smart enough to realize that by crashing those gaps with no interior DL they leave the middle of the field wide open. So either one of our inept pass rushers gets home or we get scorched....That's a sh!tty design... Leave Vince in and send one backer, Christ he's big enough to block the sun, make the fricken QB see the eclipse, then throw a pick to coverage backer!!! AKA Bruschi days of old... Lost by the QB until it's too late.

At the beginning of the year everyone acknowledged there would be growing pains with such a young, inexperienced defense. Now the growing pains begin and no one can accept them for what they are.

This defense is loaded with guys that will be here through 2015. This is not like last year when we had a bunch of guys that we knew could be playing their last game at any moment. BB committed to a total rebuild on defense.

Richard Seymour- Traded
Mike Vrabel- Traded
Ellis Hobbes- Traded
Rodney Harrison- Retired
Tedy Bruschi- Retired/ demoted
Roosevelt Colvin- Not pursued as FA

Does anyone doubt that this was by design and that it was obvious this new unit was going to need to learn the system, acclimate to the league, and define their roles?

Darius Butler (rookie)
Pat Chung (rookie)
Myron Pryor (rookie)
Leigh Bodden (first year in system)
Jerod Mayo (first year with playcalling/ leadership role; second year in league)
Gary Guyton (second year player)
Jonathan Wilhite (second year player)
Terrence Wheatley (second year player, injured last year)

The media was, even for them, incredibly stupid and irresponsible when evaluating the team this offseason. I read about a dozen articles from so-called experts about how the Patriots have an aging defense. I looked on the depth chart and saw a bunch of 24-year olds with virtually no experience. Meanwhile, idiots like Richard Seymour act like Harrison, Bruschi, Vrabel, and Samuel were superstars when they came into the league. It takes patience. I see a lot of incredible upside on the defense right now.

The biggest disappointment has been the situational play of the offense, which has managed to fold in 5 road games by forgetting how to score in the second half, despite having one of the more talented groups in the league. To me this is just inexplicable and perhaps just one of those "bad streaks" that is bound to end. It's obvious that Belichick hoped the Patriots' offense would be able to overcome the problems of a younger defense, with a double-edged plan to be competitive this season while still looking long-term. Even though this sounds like a "loser team" fan mentality, in four out of five losses, you can point to one or two plays that the offense normally converts but that they just didn't for some reason.

Jets- Numerous opportunities to put the game away
Broncos- ditto
Colts- ditto
Dolphins- ditto

The sky isn't falling here. The Patriots are a team where you can rationally make an argument that they could easily be 9-3, if their offense executes just a few times in numerous opportunities. But you can't really make any arguments that they could just as easily be 4-8. That's just not true.

It's just a question of when this team will get it's edge back and realize that they have the talent to win any game. It's only going to take one big grind-it-out road win, and I think they will find their mojo.

We could go read-and-attack, but our guys aren't fast enough to recover from a misread.

It looked like the Patriots had some sort of plan in training camp. Bring in veteran corners (Springs, Bodden) to hold the fort until the young corners (Butler, Wheatley, Wilhite) were ready to take over. Hope Merriweather becomes a poor man’s Ed Reed and replace Vrabel and Bruschi with upstart Jerrod Mayo, speedy Gary Guyton and vet pass rusher Derrick Burgess. And don’t forget Adalius Thomas would be back healthy after injuring himself again in 2008. But then the Seymour trade happened. Immediately the Patriots got worse. His impact is finally being felt in the locker room and on the field. He had 8 sacks last year and tied up lineman. Jarvis Green has proven that he is nothing more than a reserve end. Why this move? Did Belichick think he could coach up this unit and the offense would do the rest? Did he see that 2011 pick as a top 10 pick and get greedy? Did he think they couldn’t win this year? We’ll never know, but the secondary has gotten worse as the season has gone on, the pass rush has never materialized and is the big reason why this team will be watching most of the NFL playoffs. Thomas, by the way, has been a bust given his contract dollars.

2) The minuses have not been replaced with pluses or anything else. The 2007 Patriots had Stallworth at 3rd wideout and Jabar Gaffney at 4th. The 2009 Patriots have special teamer Sam Aiken at 3rd and some guy named Stanback at 4th. The Patriots have gone from Asante Samuel to Leigh Bodden to Jonathan Wilhite to Darius Butler. Any way you want to look at it, it’s not good enough. Burgess and Banta-Cain are not Mike Vrabel. Richard Seymour has been missed, I hope that pick turns out to be a stud or this trade will be a read disaster. So to recap, not enough weapons on offense, no weapons on defense.

3) Bad Drafting, Cheap, Bad Scheme or Arrogant. The jury is still out on the 2009 draft, but there is no doubt that there have been many more misses from 2006 to 2008. Dynasties end when you can’t replace good old players with good young players, ask the Dallas Cowboys. Imagine, a linebacker group of Laurinaitis, Beason and Mayo?
The cheap word has been thrown around by a few media outlets. I don’t buy it completely but when they are opting for 2011 picks over 2010 picks, letting All-Pros like Asante and Seymour walk, not locking up Tom Brady, not locking up Vince Wilfolk and not even throwing soft money at Jabar Gaffney you have to wonder what the plan is. They did spend money on Springs and Taylor which is an old Bruins trick, 5 players making 2 million over 1 making 10 million. I hate using the Patriots and Bruins in a sentence together but I will to make the point, that the Patriots are too good, to be thrifty at a time when the cap is at its highest point. And by the way, don’t get too excited for 2010, this ownership seems way too involved with the new labor deal, and that won’t be a good thing for offseason spending. Imagine Tom Brady going into his final season a free agent. Imagine that same Tom Brady a free agent, no salary cap, and Jerry Jones and his 1 billion dollar stadium lurking.

Finally, on the scheme, I see coordinators/failed head coaches like Greg Robinson and Mike Nolan come into New Orleans and Denver and turn the defenses around in one season using aggressive schemes with similar personnel to the Patriots. Dean Pees, was a failure at Kent St. as a head coach and yes it is Belichick’s game plan, but maybe its time to change. True genius adapts over time. What worked in 2004, might not work in 2009, clearly Bill thinks it’s a more offensive league. Could it be time to change the defense? It couldn’t hurt but don’t hold your breath, people who enjoy success as long as Bill can become arrogant. And when I say arrogant immediately a negative connotation comes to mind. It shouldn’t in this case; it’s his arrogance that made him great.

Great post and if people don't think the Krafts don't have their hands on personel decisions you are out of your mind. Where does the bonus money come from? The owners that's how the game of free agency is played in the NFL. The players know thats their guaranteed money any team can play with cap thats what the Pats like to potray that they are at the top of the league as far as spending to the cap every year. I believe last year they were at the bottom of the league as far as actual cash paid out. But real my gripe is the personel decsions made did they really want to win this year? Why would you trade Seymour 2 days before the season started and for a pick 2 years from now? Why would you trade Cassell for KC's 2nd round pick when by waiting one day you could have had Tampa's 1 and 3 and then throw in Vrabel for nothing. Was this because he spoke out about how business was being run by the owners of the team? It goes on and on what is the plan.

Some facts to consider:

1) Gasper (who is not BB) says BB's defense is outdated.
2) BB (who is BB) continues to run his defense the way he sees fit.
3) Gasper (who is not BB) cites anecdotal evidence in attempt to point to a correlation that proves his point.
4) BB (who is BB) continues to try to win football games.
5) I prefer Gasper (who is not BB) to not have any input on coaching decisions.

Here we go again "BB knows better than U !!1!!"

Newsflash: The defense isn't good enough this year, period. Criticism is certainly warranted.

It's just a question of when this team will get it's edge back and realize that they have the talent to win any game. It's only going to take one big grind-it-out road win, and I think they will find their mojo.

Paging Austin Powers! Your mission -- to recover the Patriots "MOJO"! Your reward if successful -- 1 Miiiillllion dollars! *Dr. Evil laughter loops in background as he is seen stroking hairless kitty*

I've been saying this for a while now and agree with what Gasper said. I long for us to play defense like the Steelers, Ravens, Jets, etc. I don't like read and react defense, I like going out and imposing your will on the other team by attacking them and getting after their QB. The two gap was a great defense in the early 2000's because A) teams ran the ball a lot more and B) outstanding personnel and experience on defense. Now that the league has become more of a passing league AND we have gotten younger and faster and more athletic on defense, it doesn't make sense why we are still two-gapping. Usually BB is ahead of the curve, but he seems to have fallen behind on this one.

I just don't get why we continue to use a defense that basically concedes that the opposing team will move the ball on you but will hold you to 3. It would work if we kept giving up FG's and our offense was dominating every game, but that isn't what we're doing. Brady has struggled against teams with attacking D's in 07 (Ravens, Eagles, Giants) and this year (Denver, Jets). But I guess if you look at it from BB's standpoint, why would he alienate a type of defense that has gotten him to 4 SB and 3 SB wins.

According to Holley on WEEI more than a few defensive players feel the same way.

I can't blame them for being frustrated. As fans, a lot of us are frustrated watching these games. We continually sit back and play passively and let schmucks like Chad Henne go to town on our defense. If I were an OLB I'd want to be getting after the QB as much as possible so I could put him on his ass.

If I were a player on this defense I would hate it if my coach wanted me to play read and react defense. I'd want to attack and impose my will on the other team and get out there and cause chaos.

With the way we are playing D, it just doesn't feel like we are physical or aggressive enough to get big stops and force turnovers. You'd like to come out and set the tone early on D by laying some wood, getting in the QB's face, and not giving them a chance to catch their breath. Instead, we dropping 7 guys into coverage and getting sliced and diced. I think the failure of this defense is most evident on 3rd downs. We cannot get off the field on 3rd downs, even on 3rd and long. We rush 4 guys and don't even attempt many stunts with our DL, drop 7, and with all the time the QB has to stand in the pocket, someone in our secondary gets beat.
